Description
Sept. 28, 1943. s. 1. DARROW 2,330,691
PACKAGE Filed Dec. 3, 1941 INVENTOR SAMUEL .f. DAREOW I/"/ I ATTO R NEY Patented Sept. 28, 1943 PACKAGE Samuel I. Darrow, Palatine Bridge, N. Y., assignor to Beech-Nut Packing Company, Canajoharie, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application December 3, 1941, Serial No. 421,406
1 Claim. (01. 229-44) The present invention relates to packages, and has special reference to packages having an outer wrapper of waxed paper that is heat-sealed.
Five cent packages of chewing gum and candy are commonly shipped to retail stores in cartons that are wrapped in waxed paper. The waxed paper wrapper is tightly heat-sealed so as to protect the contents of the cartons from air and moisture. The retailer removes the waxed paper wrapper, and may utilize the lower section of the carton to display chewing gum or candy on the store counter. With the packages heretofore produced, owing to the firmness of the sealing it is inconvenient and difiicult for the Storekeeper to remove the wrappers from the cartons.
The principal object of the present invention is to pro ide a package of the character indicated in which the wrapper may be easily and quickly removed.
The preferred embodiment of the invention, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved package;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a strip of wrapping material from which the carton wrappers may be formed.
The package illustrated in the drawing comprise a carton having a lower section 2, and an upper section or cover 4 which telescopes downwardly over the sides and ends of the lower section. This carton may be of the usual form for containing five cent packages of chewing gum or candy. The carton when filled and closed is wrapped in a waxed paper wrapper 6 with one of the edge portions 8 thereof tightly secured to the underlying portion of the wrapper by heat-sealing, the ends of the wrapper, one of which is shown at H), being folded over the ends of the carton and heat-sealed. Thus the waxed paper tightly encloses the carton and protects the contents thereof from air and moisture. Owing to the firmness of the heat-sealing, it is inconven ient and difficult to remove the wrapper without the use of a knife or other suitable implement.
In accordance with the present invention, the outer edge portion 8 of the wrapper is provided with a projecting tab l2 which ispositioned between the ends of the package, and is further provided with slits I 4 at the corners of the tab. The tab 52 which projects inwardly over the top of the package, and the portion of the edge portion 8 between the slits M, are left unsecured, the heat-sealing being omitted from this area which is defined by the dotted line [6.
With this construction when the Storekeeper desires to open a package, he grasps the tab l2 with his fingers and pulls it about the package, and owing to the nature of the waxed paper, it is found that e strip may be easily torn from the central portion of the wrapper, and thus enable the remaining portions of the wrapper to be easily removed from the package. Thus the package may be easily and conveniently opened.
Packages of the type described may be wrapped by machine, in which case the wrapping material is supplied to the machine in a strip. In forming my improved wrapper, instead of the wrappers being cut ofi by means of a straight knife, the cutting off knife is of suitable shape to form the tab l2 and slits I4. I
While for the reasons above described my invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with waxed paper wrappers, it also may be satisfactorily used in connection with other types of Wrappers.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope the package, the outer one of said edge portions being adhesively secured to the underlying portion of the wrapper throughout the length thereof, the improvement which comprises said outer overlapping edge portion having a projecting tab with slits at the corners of the tab, said tab extending a distance transversely of said outer overlapping edge portion and the portion of the wrapper extending between said slits being unsecured to the underlying portion of the wrapper.
