Description

H. L. J Cornice B et.
' No. 232,644. Patented Sept. 28,1880.
nice-polef,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUBEBT L. JUDD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CORNICE-BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,644, dated September Application filed July 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUBERT L. JUDD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Brackets for Gorniccs, of which the following is a specification.
Gornices are extensively made of cylindrical bars, and the brackets for the same are usually provided with a semicircular rest, upon which the cornice-bar is laid, and with a thumbscrew to clamp the bar. In this character of cornice-bracket it is necessary to provide various kinds of brackets with semicircular rests of difl'erent sizes to accommodate the various sizes of cylindrical bars.
My present invention is for adapting the bracket to any size of cornice-bar, and for holding the same more securely than heretofore. I make useof a suspending-strap at the end of the bracket the said strap being variable to suit the different sizes of cornice-bars, and such suspending-strap is very strong and prevents the cornice'bar becoming detached when in use.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation transversely of the cornice-bar, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bracket and part of a cornicebar.
The bracket is composed of the nearly-horizontal portion a and the inclined portion b, the ends of which have holes for the screws or nails by which the parts are attached to the window-frame or wall, where the cornice is to be used. Each cornice will have two or more of these brackets. The strap 0 is attached at one end to the bracket a b. It passes around the cylindrical or prismatic corand the end is connected adjustably to the bracket, so that the strap canbe opened for the reception of the cornice-pole, and closed around such pole for holding it, and that regardless of the size of the cornicepole.
I prefer to make the strap of sheet-brass, one end being permanently attached to the cornice-bracket and the other end removable, and provided with openings at t to catch over the T-headed stud 0, and according to the size of the cornice-pole, so the strap will be brought around the'pole and caught over the T-head at the proper opening.
There may be a longitudinal incision in the strap, and a clamping-screw in the slot in the strap,in place of the T-headed stud. In either instance the cornice-bar is suspended very firmly, and the strap is adapted to the various forms of cornice-bars.
One end of the strap may be soldered fast to the bracket, or it may be held firmly by the stud or the clamping-screw that receives the adjustable end.
I claim as my invention- 1. A cornice-bracket having an adjustable strap at the end, whereby the cornice-bar is supported, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the cornice-bracket, of a suspending-strap having openings in it, and a T-headed stud or a clamp for holding the strap after it has been passed around the cornice-bar, substantially asset forth.
Signed by me this 20th day of July, A. D. 1880.
