SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,496, dated September 21, 1880.

Application filed December 26, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEVI HEYWOOD, of Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and 5 Improved Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this I specification.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement in chairs; and the invention consists in a wicker chair composed of a frame, a back, a bottom, and a border, constructed and arranged as hereinafter specifically set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wicker chair 5 Fig. 2, a side view of the skeleton-frame of same; Fig. 3, partfront view, and

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

A represents a chair constructed with a 2 wooden frame and covered with strands of rattan. The seat-frame, composed of the side pieces, B, and arm and front piece, 0, of this chair, which supports the front and sides of the seat, is not continuous at the rear, the ends 0 of theseat-frame being secured directly to the back-frame c. To the front of the arm and front piece, (J, and centrally placed, is a bridge, D. The back-frame c is continued into back legs, d, and the side pieces, B, may be continned into or connected with front legs, 0. To the baek-frame is also fixed a curved brace, E. To this brace and to the back legs, d, are secured diagonal braces f,- also, to the back legs and to the front legs are attached 4o braces g, and to the front legs and piece, 0, are fixed braces 6. Connecting the front and back legs together are diagonal braces j, and to the ends of the legs the ordinary-rockers k are attached. This constitutes, substantially,

In weaving in the bottom or seat on of my chair the bridge D enables the weaving to make a rounded form, t, on each side of the bridge to fit the person of the occupant, and the absence of a continuous seat-frame at the rear enables the weaving of the seat or bottom to form the curved depression F to also fit the person and to render the seat or bot- '70 tom yielding at that point. In case this depression F, from long use, should sag and render the chair uncomfortable, the curved brace E will aetas a guard and stop, preventing undue sagging.

Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The chair-frame described, composed of the seat-frame made up of side pieces, B, and an arm and front piece, 0, having a bridge, I), the back-frame c, the curved brace E, and the braces f g ij, substantially as shown.

2. In a wicker chair, the continuous flexible border Gr, constructed and arranged as shown, extended from the rigid frame outward, and forming a head-rest, 0, sides 19 of back, armrests r, and seat-front S, substantially as described.

3. As an improved article of manufacture, 0 a wicker chair composed of a frame and a woven bottom having the yielding portion F, the rest t, the back 1, and the continuous border Gr, constructed and arranged as shown, and extended from the rigid frame outward, substantially as described.
