1 Claim.
The present invention appertains to new and useful improvements in window screens and more particularly to window screens of the roll type.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a permanent type of screen for windows of the roll type which include means for definitely fastening the edge portions of the screen strip to afford a positive exclusion of flies and other insects.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a roll type screen for windows wherein multiple fasteners are employed for securing the edge portions of the screen strip detachably in place.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents an elevational View of a window equipped with upper and lower roll screens.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary inside elevational View.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Figure '7 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 1-1 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 8-8 of Figure 2.
Figure 9 is a side elevational view of the extensible screen roll.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 generally refers to a window construction which includes frame sides 6 against the inner sides of which are secured, inner, outer and intermediate sash guide strips 1, B and 9 defining guideways for the upper and lower sashes II) and II.
In carrying out the present invention which is generally referred to by numeral l2, a hood denoted by numeral I3 is employed, the same having one side and its bottom open and provided with end walls l4, each end wall having a bearing l5 for receiving the corresponding pintle end I6 of a screen roll 11 which is made up of a pair of telescopic sections a.-b.
The lower portion of the front wall of the hood I3 is curved inwardly and upwardly as at [8, while the upper rear edge portion is formed with a flange l9 having slots 20 therein across which can be disposed the winged head 2| of screws 22 for holding the hood I3 is definite position against the lower portion of the window sash l I.
On the roll ll is wound a screen strip 23, the outer end portion of which has a barrel 24 suitably secured transversely thereto and adapted to receive a rod 25 which has its end portions extending through ears 26 secured as at 21 to the sill 28 of the window structure. Thus the outer end of the screen is positively secured to the window sill, while the roll and the wound part of the screen is carried by the lower portion of the outer or lower sash ll.
As can be seen in Figures 7 and 8, the lug 29 serves to secure one end of a strip spring 30 to the inner side of the hood I2 while the major portion of the spring is convoluted about one pintle l6 as is clearly shown in Figure 8. The spring 30 serves to wind the screen strip 23 tautly on the roll l1.
At this point it will be observed, that the hood I2 is made up of a pair of sections c-d to permit adjustability in complement with the roll I! in that the assembly can be adjusted to accommodate screen stripping of different widths.
As can be seen in Figures 2, 4 and 5, the intermediate sash guide strip 9 is on each side of the window frame formed with a channel 32 to accommodate a strip 33. This strip 33 has secured thereto a toothed strip 34 which is complementary to a toothed strip 35 on the corresponding edge of the screen strip 23. These two strips 34 and 35, taken with a connector 36 serve to define a multiple fastener at each longitudinal edge portion of the screen strip 23.
As can be seen in Figure 2, each of the strips 34 extends outwardly to the lower portion of the upper sash It], at which point a grooved strip 31 carries a resilient horizontally disposed strip or squeegee 38 which rides the window pane of the outer sash H as the outer sash II is moved upwardly elevating the screen roll assembly.
The connector 36 is of the constricting type adapted to bring together the strips 34 and 35 into interconnected meshed relation, to the end that there will be a positive connection between the edge portions of the screen strip and the window which will take place automatically as the sash H is raised. It can be seen, that the connector 36 is permanently fixed by a driven element 39 so that this connector 36 rides upwardly with the sash l l on each longitudinal edge of the screen to bring the screen into connected engagement with the corresponding complementary strips 34.
As is shown in Figure 1, both the upper and lower screen assemblies are identical in construction and a description of the lower has been thought suflicient.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as ing strips at the sides thereof, a vertically slidable sash adapted to be mounted in said frame, a screen rollably mounted on said sash and having one end adapted to be connected to said sill whereby said screen is unrolled by elevation of said sash, and means to fasten the side edges of said screen to said parting strips progressively under elevation of the sash comprising slide fastener strips extending along and fixed to the side edges of the screen, similar slide fastener strips adapted to extend along said parting strips and be fixed thereto, the first and second mentioned strips forming complemental pairs, and slide fastener connectors carried by said sash intermediate said roll and the end of the screen connected to the sill and adapted to interconnect said slide fastener strips at the respective side edges of the screen.
