Application June 17, 1942, Serial No. 447,324
(Cl. 229-52) I 12 Claims.
This invention relates to carriers for contain ers such as bottles, cans, or other packages, used for beverages and foods, the carrier preferably being made from a single sheet of card-board, or similar material, suitably blanked and formed so that the same may be shipped to the initial user thereof in folded flat condition ready to be set up for use.
Heretofore, I have devised a form of carrier for containers as described and shown in my previous application for Letters Patent, filed April 24, 1940, Serial No. 331,279, w'hichcarrier has become quite popular and has gone into large and extensive use.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a carrier for containers such as bottles and the like, made from sheet material, preferably a single sheet of cardboard, paper board, or similar tough, flexible material, in which carrier the containers placed therein will be securely held against accidental displacement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carrier for containers in which a lighter stock may be safely employed that has heretofore been commonly used in the manufacture of such carriers.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a carrier of the character aforesaid, such an arrangement of the parts that the various strains imparted to the structure when in use will be adequately provided for, in that the carrier will be suitably re-inforced at various places where thegreatest strains occur, thus permitting the use of a thinner material.
A further object of the invention is to provide a carrier of the character aforesaid, and having the severaladvantages as above set forth, which can be partially formed, or arranged for setting up, in the machines used for the production of carriers made in the form described and shown in my previous application for Letters Patent, without requiring much change in the construction and arrangement of said machines.
The nature and characteristic features of the present invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blanked sheet from which the carrier is made, the same being shown in flat condition before being formed and set up;
Fig.2 is a similar view, but showing the blank in a partially folded condition, at an intermediate stage in the formation of the carrier;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the carrier in a more advanced stage of its formation;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, with the bottom panels being shown in-folded and the side panels off-set to bring the carrier to the condition in which the same is preferably delivered to the original user thereof;

It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely and that various modifications and changes may be made in the structure and arrangement disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, and now more particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, the sheet or blank, from which the carrier is made, preferably comprises a single sheet of material such as cardboard, paper-board, or similar tough flexible material suitably shaped, and provided with crease lines as shown therein and as required to define the various parts.
The blank I0, preferably consists of two main portions, the portion I l comprising, in the main, the internal parts of the carrier, and the portion I2 comprising, in the main, the external parts of the structure. The portions H and I2 are joined to each other along a longitudinal crease line I3.
The portion II is provided with two bottom panels l4, connected to each other along a central transverse crease line IS. The bottom panels H are respectively joined along a transverse crease line I6 to a portion ll which constitutes a part of a wall on each side of the container when the same is set up.
Each of the portions I1 is joined, by means of inclined partition members IE to a panel I9 which provides a part of a centrally disposed partition from which one of the portions 20 of a handle extends. The handle portion 20 is connected to the panel portion l9 along transverse crease lines 25. The inclined partition members l8 are respectively joined along the longitudinal crease lines 2| at one end to the portion l1, and at the other end along similar longitudinal crease lines 22 to the central partition panel l9.
Each of the panels l9, to which the handle elements are connected, is also connected, along a longitudinal crease line 23 to an end wall panel 24 which is joined along the longitudinal crease line |3 to a part of the portion l2, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The outer portion |2 of the carrier is likewise provided with bottom panels 26 joined to each other along a central transverse crease line 21. It should here be noted that in the blank the bottom panels I 4 of the portion II have their ends abutting adjacent ends of the bottom panels 26 f the portion l2, and that these bottom panels are not united along these end margins, but are separated by a out line 28'thereby enabling the carrier to be formed and set up without binding at this point.
The bottom panels 26 of the portion l2 are each joined along a transverse crease line 30 to an outer side wall panel 3|. Each of the outer side wall panels 3| is connected, along a longitudinal crease line 32, to one end of the outer wall part ll of the portion The longitudinal crease lines 32 are in efiect extensions of, or disposed in alinement with, the longitudinal crease lines l3 which are provided between the panels 24 and 3| on each side of the structure. Each end panel 24 is also joined along the longitudinal crease line I3 to an outer side wall panel 3|.
The end panel 24 is also joined along another extension 33 of the longitudinal crease line |3 by means of a part 34 to a panel 36 which in the set up carrier, constitutes a portion of the central vertical partition structure. The part 34 is joined to the panel 36 along a longitudinal crease line 35. Each panel 36 also has an extending handle portion 31 complemental to the extending handle portions 20 of the parts IQ of the central partition structure, being joined thereto along transverse crease lines 48.
Each of the outer side panels 3l' of the portion I2 is connected to a panel 38 along a longitudinal crease line 39. Each of said panels 38 has upper and lower inclined edges, and said panels form the end walls of the carrier. The outer side wall panel 3| on each side is separated from the portions 34 and by means of the transverse out line 40 and likewise each end wall panel 38 is separated from the adjacent central panel 36 by means of an inclined out line 4|.
Joined to the end panels 38 and to the partition panels 36 along longitudinal crease lines 42 are tabs 43 which in the set up structure are inturned and secured to corners 44 of the panels l9 by means of wire stitching 45 (see Fig. 2). To.
permit the stitching at this point, a small tab 46 is cut out of each of the end members 38, which tabs 46 are stitched to the main tabs 43 when the same is secured to the corners of the panels l9.
After the carrier has been partly formed, to the condition shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the same is then folded along the transversal crease lines l5 and 21 to bring the same to the condition shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The parts 36, towards each end of the blank, as well as the parts l9, which are now disposed between the parts 36, are all secured to each other, preferably by means of the wire stitching 49. (See Figs. 3 and 4.)
The carriers may, if desired, be shipped to the user in the condition as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, but preferably they are subjected to another operation to bring the same to the condition as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In this operation the bottom panel members 26 and I4 are inturned to cause the same to be disposed within the structure between the panels 3| and the panels |'I. At the same time the outer side walls, including the panels 3| and the panels II, are shifted sidewise to bring the same to the offset relationship as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. When the carriers are subjected to this operation, by reason of the inherent strains thereby impressed upon the various parts, as soon as the carriers are released from their packages they will spring to approximately the full open position, as shown in Figs. 5 to 9 of the drawings, and they will then be ready to have the bottles, or other containers, inserted in the respective compartments provided for the reception thereof.
By the foregoing arrangement there is provided a bottle carrier in which the outer side walls, as well as the end walls extend upwardly a distance sufilcient to insure the proper retention of the bottles or other containers, when the same are placed therein, and will preclude the accidental displacement of the bottles or other containers therefrom.
It will be noted that in this, as in the preceding forms of bottle carriers devised by the present inventor, the bottles may be readily placed in the containers, and may be easily removedtherefrom, when the containers are in the fully set up condition.
