This invention relates to animprovement in flexible pocket receptacles and has as its general object the provision in receptacles of this character, such as a billfold, of a coin purse which in the normal functioning of the fold is a unitary part thereof but which may, as occasion requires, be removed from the fold and used separately therefrom.

Other objects reside in details of structure by which this general object is obtained without impairment of the normal operation of the fold or purse as such.

Further objects are the provision of means by whichthe purse element is securely held to the body of the billfold and an arrangement of parts which permits the closure device of the purse to perform its function equally well when the purse is united with the fold and when it is beingused separately.

Referring to the drawing, the billfold illustrated is shown as including a rear or outer wall Ill and an inner wall member II and I2 which, as shown, is continuous with wall I 0, the fold line l3 connecting the walls forming the bottom of the several compartments of the billfold. Thefold also includes the usual stay or inner wall member M which has a limited sliding movement relative to'inner wall members II and I5. As shown, the several members making up the inner wall are, with the exception of stay l4, secured at the ends of the fold to the outer wall Ill as by stitching l6. The two halves of the fold are adapted to ner along fold line l1.

It will be understood that the main fold structure may take any suitable form and, except as later pointed out in the specification and claims, the particular details thereof shown and described are illustrative only and not essential features of my present invention. 7

Wall members l2 and I5 provide between them a pocket l8 (Fig. 6) which is open at the top and preferably at the side toward fold line H. The upper edge of wall member l2.is provided with a flap l9 which extends into pocket l8. 7 Flap I9 may be integral with wall l2 or formed as a separate piece, but in either case there is some advantage in stitching it to wall l2 adjacent the edge, as shown at 20, to increase its tendency to hug the inner face of the wall and increase the sharpness of the crevice or bight beneath the flap. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the edge of flap [9 adjacent fold line I! is provided with a vertical portion 21 of substantial length, while the bottom edge is cut on a curve 22 tapering to a point at the opposite end.

The purse, best shown in Fig. 4, may take various forms, but preferably comprises a rear wall 25 and a front wall 26 connected directly together along their bottom edge 21 and at one end as at 28. The opposite ends are preferably connected together by an inwardly folded substantially triangular gusset 29 which tapers toward the lower corner. The rear wall is provided with a closure flap 30. Cooperating fastening members are carried by flap 30 and wall 26 to secure the closure of the purse. Preferably this fastening means takes the form of a conventional snap fastener, and flap 30 is shown carrying-the socket member 3| of such a fastener. Socket member 3| is adapted to engage the post member 32 of the fastener secured to the outer face of wall 26.

When the purse is functioning as an element of the billfold it is nested in pocket I8, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, with flap l9 engaged in the pocket of the purse. The shape of the purse will in general conform to that of the pocket. The relative dimensions of the pocket l8 and the purse are made such that the bottom of the purse seats at the bottom of pocket l8 and edge 28 similarly seats at the closed end of the pocket, Flap I9 is preferably provided with a straight edgeZl which seats in the crease or fold 33 formed at the juncture of gusset 29 and wall 26. The fit is preferably as close as manufacturing tolerances will permit and avoid danger of buckling. The edge portions 34 of purse wall 26 seat in the crease at the juncture of wall. l2 and flap l9 and, when the latter is stitched to the wall as shown, the

member 3| engaged with post 32 (see Figs. 1 and 5) in the same manner and with the same effect as though the purse member were constructed integral with the billfold. When flap 30 is raised as shown in Fig. 2 for the insertion or removal of coins, keys, or other articles into or from the purse, flap l9 maintains post 32 in position in opening 35. This tends to hide the removable character of the purse and serves as a further means for holding the purse in the pocket. The engagement of part 32 in opening 35 if made sumciently close prevents movement of the purse in the plane of the pocket and the line contact of the top edge of the purse wall and flap l5 prevents rocking movement of the purse.

When the purse is removed from pocket 532,.hole 35 is closed by flap l9, and pocket l3 can be used for cards and the like in the usual manner. When the purse is secured to the billfold as above described, cards and the like may be carried in the open compartment between the rear wall of the purse and wall member 15.

The provision of gusset 29x at one end of the purse member substantially increases its carrying capacity. The arrangement of the parts so that the means which secure the purse to the pocket engages the purse forwardly of gusset 29 in combintion with the fact that one end of pocket 48 is left open, permits the gusset 29 to function as completely when the purse is secured to the receptacle as when it is used separately. The use of a single gusset positioned at the endadjacent folcl line I! tends to keep the bulk of the contents of the purse adjacent said fold line providing a heater alignment of the ends of the fold.

, While in the construction above described the purse is shown rectangular in form, the purse may be variously shaped to conform to the design of the billfold with which it is combined. For example, where the side of pocket l8 towards the fold line I! is inclined, as shown in Fig. '7', the end of the purse will be similarly inclined. In Fig. 7 primed characters are used to indicate the elements analogous to those previously described, and it will; be seen that a straight edge ii is formed on flap i9, carried by outer pocket wall l2, which edge engages, as previously described, in the crease. or fold 3 3. at the juncture of gusset 29 and the outer wall 26 of the purse. The inclination of the crease 33' and edge 2! gives added resistance to removal of the purse from the pocket.

The preferred structural features above described result in a removable purse compartment, the removable character of which is scarcely noticeable. It will be understood however that various alterations of fold and purse structure may be made.

Other means than flap i9 may be employed for releasably securing the purse member to the receptacle independently of the connection afforded by the snap fastener 3 [-32.

43, as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, which gusset, making due allowances for the thickness of the material and for manufacturing tolerances conforms to adjacent gusset 29 of the purse. To secure the purse in the pocket between walls l2 and I5 and to the receptacle, the gusset 40 is drawn outwardly as shown in Fig. 8 and after the purse member has been inserted the gusset 49 is returned inwardly so that its central crease or fold ll engages in the central crease or fold 42 of gusset 29, as shown in Fig. 9. Since the gussets, as best shown in Fig. 8, have a greater inward extension adjacent the mouth of the pocket than at the bottom, the purse is held to the receptacle until released by distortion of the gusset All outwardly as shown in Fig. 8. The pressure of gusset 48 also holds the wall 26 of the purse against pocket wall l2 to the same purposes as flap I9 previously described.

What I claim is:

1. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse having a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front wall of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front face of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in said pocket, and means disposed at the mouth of said pocket for releasably securing the. purse member to the receptacle and in nested position in the pocket independently of said fastener members.

2. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair ofwall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse having a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front wall of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front face of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in said pocket, and means other than said fastener members for releasably securing the purse member to the receptacle and; in nested position in the pocket.

In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wallmembers connected together to form a pocket; between. them exteriorly of the main compartment of the, receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said pursei having; a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the, front wall. of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent, the front face of the purse. beingprovided with an opening through; which the fastener members. may engage when, the. purse is nested in said pocket, and. means, secured to at least one wall of the pocket for releasabl curing the purse member to the receptacle andin nested position in the pocket; independentlyof said fastening: means.

4. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a nected together to form a pocket betweenthem exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse having a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front face of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front face of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in said pocket, and means to hold the fastening member carried by the body of the purse in operative position with respect to said opening when the purse is opened in its nested position.

5. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse having a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front face of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front face of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in said pocket, and means independent of said fastener members for releasably securing the purse member to the receptacle in nested position and maintaining the front of the purse member against the adjacent wall of the pocket when the purse closure flap is open.

6. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of well members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse having a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front face of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front face of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in said pocket, and means independent of said fastener members for releasably securing the purse member to the receptacle and maintaining the front of the purse member against the adjacent wall of the pocket when the purse closure flap is open, said last-named means comprising a flap connected to said adjacent pocket wall and extending into the purse, said lastnamed flap closing the opening in the pocket wall when the purse is removed from the pocket.

7. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, said pocket being open at the top and one end, a purse member removably nested in said pocket with the mouth of the purse adjacent the open top of the pocket, a closure for the purse member, said purse member being provided at the end adjacent the open end of the pocket with an expansible gusset, and means to releasably secure the purse member to the receptable and in nested position in the pocket when the purse is either open or closed.

8. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle and open at the top and one end, purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse member being provided at the end adjacent the open end of the pocket with an expansible gusset, a closure flap carried by the rear wall of the purse, and cooperating fastening members carried respectively by said flap and the front Wall of the purse for releasably securing the closure flap to the body of the purpose, that pocket wall adjacent the front wall of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in the pocket.

9. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle and open at the top and one side,'a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse member beingprovided at the end adjacent the open end of the pocket with an expansible gusset, a closure flap carried by the rear wall of the purse, cooperating fastening members carried respectively by said flap and the front wall of the purse for releasably secure ing the closure flap to the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front wall of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in the pocket, and means to releasably secure the purse member to the receptacle and in nested position in the pocket independently of said fastener members.

10. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle and open at the top and one side, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse member being provided at the end adjacent the open end of the pocket with an expansible gusset, a closure flap carried by the rear wall of the purse, cooperating fastening members carried respectively by said flap and the front wall of the purse for releasably securing the closure flap to the body of the purse, that pocket Wall adjacent the front wall of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage when the purse is nested in the pocket, and means to releasably secure the purse member to the receptacle independently of said fastener members, said last-named means comprising a flap connected to said adjacent pocket wall and extending into said purse, said last-named flap closing the opening in the pocket wall when the purse is removed from the pocket.

11. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse member being provided at the end adjacent the open end of the pocket with an inwardly folded substantially triangular gusset, a closure flap carried by the rear wall of the purse, cooperating fastening members carried respectively by said flap and the front wall of the purse for releasably securing the closure flap to the body of the purse, that pocket Wall adjacent the front wall of the purse being provided with an opening through which the fastener members may engage, and means secured to said adjacent pocket wall and interengaging a fold of said gusset to releasably secure the purse to the receptacle independently of said fastening members.

12. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle and open at the top and one side, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse member being provided at the end adjacent the open end of the pocket with an inwardly folded substantially triangular gusset, a closure flap carried by the rear wall of the purse, cooperating socket and post members of a snap fastener carried respectively by said flap and the front wall of the purse for releasably securing the closure flap to the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front wall ofthe purse being provided with an opening through which the post member of the fastener members may extend, and means to releasably secure the purse member to the receptacle independently of said fastener members, said lastnamed means comprising a flap disposed at the mouth of the pocket and connected to said adjacent pocket wall, said flap extending into said purse and being formed with a substantially straight side edge engaging in the gusset fold at the juncture of the gusset and the front wall of the muse.

13. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, front and rear wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, an auxiliary receptacle removably nested in said pocket and including front and rear wall members respectively positioned adjacent the front and rear wall members of the pocket, means barring entrance to the space between said front walls of the pocket and auxiliary receptacle adjacent the entrance to the latter, a closure flap for closing the entrance to the auxiliary receptacle, and cooper ating fastening members, respectively carried by said flap and the front wall of the auxiliary receptacle for releasably securing said closure flap when the auxiliary receptacle is either nested in said pocket or removed therefrom, said front wall of the pocket being provided with an opening through which said members may engage to secure said flap when the auxiliary receptacle is nested in the pocket.

14. In aflexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, front and rear wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a flap carried by said front wall member at the entrance to the Docket, an auxiliary receptacle 'removably nested in said pocket and including front and rear wall members respectively positioned adjacent the front and rear wall members of the pocket, a closure flap extending from the rear wall of the auxiliary receptacle outwardly of the pocket, and cooperating fastening members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front wall of the auxiliary receptacle, the adjacent front wall of the pocket being provided with an opening through which the fastener member carried by the front wall of the auxiliary receptacle is exposed, said first named flap being folded inwardly over the adjacent edge of the front wall of the auxiliary receptacle to close the opening between the front walls of the pocket and auxiliary receptacle, said closure flap being folded over both said front walls, with said cooperating fastener members engaging through said openmg.

15. In a flexible pocket receptacle having a main compartment, a pair of wall members connected together to form a pocket between them exteriorly of the main compartment of the receptacle, a purse member removably nested in said pocket, said purse having a closure flap, fastening means for securing said closure flap, said means comprising cooperating members respectively carried by said closure flap and the front face of the body of the purse, that pocket wall adjacent the front face of the purse being provided with an opening into which the fastening element carried by the body of the purse extends for engagement by the flap carried fastener element when the purse is nested in the pocket, and means to hold the fastening member carried by the body of the purse in said opening when the purse is opened in its nested position.
