Application September 13, 1941, Serial No. 410,673
6 Claims.
This invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to ladies garments of the pajamas type.
In accordance with the present invention the garment comprises a waist (or coat) and trousers, in separable relation, so constructed that the trousers are supported by the waist and the latter is adjustable on the wearer by adjustment of parts of the waist which are connected to parts of the trousers. The provision of a garment of the pajamas type having this supporting and adjusting construction constitutes one of the objects of this invention.
In the preferred form of the invention and in accordance with another object thereof, the garment of the above indicated construction is devoid of buttons, snap fasteners, hooks, etc.
In another form of the invention, buttons are provided for attaching the trousers to the waist but the latter need not have any buttons or the like and yet can be readily adjusted. The provision of a garment of this construction constitutes a further object of the invention.
The above objects of the invention, and other objects which might hereinafter appear, will be fully understood from the following description considered with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawing.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a front View, on a larger scale, of the lower part of the waist and of the upper part of the trousers, the waist and trousers being, for the purposes of illustration, displaced from their normal relative positions;
Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the opposite sides, respectively, of the parts illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing another form of the invention, but showing the waist and trousers in normal attached relation;
Figs. 6 and 7 are views of the'opposite sides, respectively, of the garment illustrated in Fig. 5, but showing, for the purposes of illustration, the waist and trousers in detached relation;
Fig. 8 is a View, on a larger scale, of the side of the trousers illustrated in Fig. '7, but showing the placket open.
Referring now to the drawing in more detail, and first to the preferred form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, the garment III comprises, in separable relation, an upper garment I2 and a nether garment I4, here shown as a waist or coat and trousers, respectively, said garment I0 being of the pajamas type. Said waist and trousers have parts, hereinafter to be detailed, which provide for adjustment of the waist and for support of the trousers by the waist, said parts being preferably in complete detachable relation whereby the waist and trousers can be detached from each other.
Referring first to the construction of the waist, the latter comprises front portions I6 and I8 which cross each other in overlapping relation and which have parts of reduced width which provide strap- like extensions 20 and 22, respectively, which, when the garment is on the wearer, extend from said front portions toward the opposite sides, respectively, of the garment. It will be understood that front portions I6 and I8 are continuous with the back portion 24 of the waist. The lower part 26 of the waist is referably of double thickness being formed by a wide hem. Said part 26 of the waist is provided with openings 28 and 30 positioned at the opposite sides, respectively, of the waist, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and an additional opening 32 is provided in said hemmed part 26 between the adjacent opening 28 and the longitudinal center line of the garment. The strap-like extension 22 of the Waist portion I8 extends from the inside of the garment to the outside thereof through said opening 32 and as hereinafter described is attached to a part 34 of the trousers I4 which passes through the adjacent opening 28. The strap-like extension 20 of portion I6 is positioned at the opposite side of the garment and as hereinafter described is attached to a part 36 of the trousers which passes through the adjacent opening 30, said strap- like extensions 20 and 22 being tied to said trousers parts 36 and 34, as indicated by the bows or knots 38 and 40. It will be under stood that by adjustment obtained in the tying of straps 20 and 22 to parts 36 and 34, respectively, of the trousers, the waist can be secured adjustably about the wearer and at the same timethe trousers are supported by the waist.
Referring now in further detail to the trousers I4, the latter are provided at one side thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, with a placket opening 42. The upper edge portion of the trousers is provided with a waist band 44 formed by folding and hemming the upper edge of the trousers. Part 34 referred to above is formed as a continuation of hem 44 and extends from one side of placket 42 through an opening 46 provided in the trousers at the other side of said placket. As illustrated in Fig. 3, said part 34 is in the form of a strap and extends through opening 46 from the inside of the trousers to the outside thereof. At the opposite side of the trousers part 35, which is in the form of a strap, is stitched to the hemmed part 44 as indicated at 48. It will be observed that straps 34 and 36 pass through openings 28 and 30, respectively, from the inside of waist l2 to the outside thereof where said straps are tied to the straps 22 and 20, respectively, of the waist, forming the bows or knots 40 and 38, respectively, referred to above.
As illustrated in Fig. l, in the normal relative positions of the waist and trousers the upper part of the trousers is overlapped by the lower part of the Waist so that only the parts of straps 34 and 36 which extend through the waist openings 28 and 30 are visible on the outside of the garment. It will be noted that the garment is devoid of buttons, snaps, hooks or the like, and yet the waist can be adjusted on the wearer, and that by said adjustment the trousers are attached to the waist and supported thereby.
In the form of theinvention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 the waist IZA and the trousers MA are of substantially the same construction as the waist and trousers I2 and M, respectively, of garment 10 described above, except in the respects presently to be explained. Trousers I4A are provided at one side thereof with a button .50 which engages the waist in an opening or button hole 52 at the adjacent side of the garment. The opposite side of the trousers is provided with a placket opening 54 at opposite sides of which, and on the waist band 56 thereof, are provided buttons .58 and openings or button holes 60 and 62, said last mentioned button hole being formed in a straplike extension 64 of waist band 56. The front portions MA and I8A of the waist, which portions correspond to the front portion I6 and. I8, respectively, of waist IZhave, like said last mentioned waist portions, parts of reduced Width to provide the strap-like extensions 22A and A, respectively, strap-like extensions 22A passing from the inside of the garment to the outside thereof through an opening 32A, and the hemmed part 26A of the waist is provided at one side thereof with said opening or button vhole .52 and. .at its opposite side with an opening or button hole 64. Straps 20A and 22A are provided with spaced button holes 65 and 68, respectively. When the .trousers MA are attached to the waist [2A button 50, at one side of the trousers, and one of the buttons .58 at the other side of the trousers'engage the waist in button holes 52 and 64, respectively, at the adjacent sides of the waist, and straps 20A and 22A are attached, respectively, to said button 59 and to the button 58 which engage in one of the button holes 55 and 68, respectively, of the saidstraps as illustrated in .Fig. 5. When the waist and trousers are thus attached, the lower part of the waist overlaps the upper part of the trousers and only two of the buttons of the trousers are visible on the outside of the garment. It will be noted that the waist band of the trousers can be adjusted in size by the engagement of one of the buttons 58 either in button hole 66 or in button hole 52, and that the waist 12A can be adjusted by engagement of the selected . button holes 66 and 68 of straps ZliAand 22A with the button 50 and with the button 58 which is engaged in the button hole 64.
Thus it is seen that the garments described above are well adapted to accomplish the objects of the invention. It will be understood that garments embodying the present invention can be made to be worn for various purposes, for example as a sleeping garment, as beach pajamas,
etc. While I have illustrated two forms of the invention the latter may be embodied otherwise than as herein shown or described, and that in each of the illustrated forms certain changes in the details of construction and in the arrangement of parts may be made. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to the invention as herein specifically shown or described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
