Description

(ModeL) A. H. OLEAVES. Machine for Stoning Watch Plates, 8L0.
No. 231,275. Patented Aug. 17,1880.
WITNESSES I d/Z'fiiil A w ATTORNEY N-FETERS, FNOTOJJTHOGRAFHER, WASNINGTON, D, O-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED H. OLEAVES, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR STONING WATCH-PLATES, C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,275, dated August 17, 1880.
Application filed July 17, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED H. OLEAVES, of Springfield, in the county of San gamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Machines for Stoning Watch-Plates, Grinding Flat Steel-Work, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side View of my improved machine, and Figs. 2 and 8 are details.
This invention has relation to improvements in machines for stoning watch-plates, grinding flat steel-work, lapping oil-stones and bones, and securing fiat surfaces on any kind of watch or other work.
The nature of the invention will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a table raised a suitable distance from the floor, and having secured thereon a trough, B, containing a bed or lap, 0, upon which the work is pressed in smoothing it.
D indicates a lever fulcrumed at one end to the rafters, joists, or roof of a shop, and having suspended from its other end a connecting-rod, D, which extends through a slot in the table A, and is connected to a treadle, E, arranged under the same.
The lever D is supported from below by a spring, S, arranged on a headed belt, 0, extending from below through said lever and secured to the roof of the shop. By the depression of the treadle the lever is drawn down and spring S compressed, so that when the treadle is released the lever resumes its former position. The connecting-rod is provided near its upper end with a hinge-joint, b, and at or about the level of the top of the stone with an open frame, 0, connecting the upper and lower sections of the said rod, for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
F indicates a rod of suitable rigidity, con nected to the lever D by a universal joint, 0 c, at a point between its power end and the spring S, and depending vertically directly over the stone.
The article to be smoothed is laid upon the lap or bed and the conical end of the rod F engaged in areoess of the work by depressing (Model.)
the treadle. A backward and forward motion, changeable at pleasure into a vibratory motion through the universal joint, may be then imparted to the said rod, drawing the work over the stone.
G indicates a pitman coupled to vibrate vertically to an offset, 61,011 rod F at one end, andat the other, by means of a strap, e, to the wrist c of a crank, H, so as to vibrate horizontally. The crank H is keyed on a shaft, J, operated by suitable gearing, and imparts a push-and-pull movement to rod F, which, through the universal joint in the said rod and the hinge-joint in the wrist end of the pitman, may be arbitrarily changed to a combined push-and-pnll and vibratory motion when requisite.
The pitman extends through the frame of the connecting-rod, and may work both vertically and horizontally without interfering therewith.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a machine for flatting metal plates and other like objects, the combination, with the lap or bed (3, of the rod F, suspended by a universal joint to a lever, D, the spring supporting said lever, the connecting-rod D,
and treadle E, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the lever D, pivoted to the roof or other support, the headed rod a, the spring S on said rod below the said lever, and a table, A, supporting a lap or stone, 0, of the rod F, universally jointed to said lever over the stone, and provided with the offset (1, the connecting-rod hinge-jointed to said lever D, the treadle E, the crankshaft J, having a driving-pulley and a crank, H, and the pitman G, pivoted to vibrate vertically to the offset and to vibrate horizontally to a strap, 0, encircling the wrist of the crank, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the stone or lap, of a rod, F, universally jointed to a springsupported lever, a mechanism depressing said lever, and a mechanism vibrating the said rod rectilinearly, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above 1 have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED HENRY OLEAVES.
