FOLDING TABLE Jacob N. Weber, Seattle, Wash. Application August 20, 1941, Serial No. 407,626
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding tables designed primarily for camping purposes and has for its primay object to provide an article of this character composed of a plurality of'foldable sections cooperating to form a table top when in open position and to the under side of which various articles and utensils used for camping purposes may be attached and stored and in which the sections of the table may be conveniently folded into a compact form for transportation purposes.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the table in folded position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the bottom of the table section in partly open position.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the table in its open position.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the table in its open position and showing the bottom of the'table section.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional View of the center folded sections of the table and showing the clip provided for securing said sections in open position.
Figure 7 is a similar view showing the sections in open position.
Figure 8 is a detail of one of the folding legs.
Figure 9 is a detail showing the leg in open position.
Figure 10 is a fragmentary sectional view through one of the sections of the table and showing the top in raised position, and
Figure 11 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line HI| of Figure 10.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 5, 6, l and 8 designate the four sections of the table, each of which is of substantially duplicate construction and each section includes side frame members 9 and end frame members [0 suitably secured to each other in substantially. rectangular form, the sections 5 and 6 being hingedly secured to each other by hinge members Hattached to the lower edge portions of the adjacent end frame members Iii, while the sections 1 and 3 are similarly hingedly secured to each other by th hinge members I2.
The sections 5 and 8 have their longitudinal frame members 9 positioned against each other and free from each other for swinging into and out of folding position with respect to the sections 5 and 1, respectively, while the longitudinal frame members of the sections 5 and 1 are hingedly connected to each other by concealed hinge members l3 so that the sections may be folded relative to each other as shown to advantage in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
When the sections are arranged in their open position, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the adjacent longitudinal frame members of the sections 6 and 8 as well as the adjacent longitudinal frame members of the sections 5 and l are secured by means of a U-shaped wire clips I l which are pivoted at one end to one of the sections of the table, as shown at 15.
Each of the sections of the table are provided with a foldable leg I6 at the outer corner of each section and the table section 8 is also provided with a second foldable leg 17 positioned at its inner corner and forming a center leg for the table when in open position. Each of thelegs is of duplicate construction and accordingly a detailed explanation of one will .suflice for all. Each leg includes a top section l8 and'a bottom section l9 hingedly connected to each other as at 20. The hingedly connected ends of the leg sections are formed with longitudinally extending recesses 2i and 22, respectively, the recess 2| having a. locking pin 23 slidably positioned therein operated by a knob 24 projecting laterally through a slot 23 at one side of the section and adapted for insertion into the socket 22. Secured in the corner of the frame members of the table section is a bracket member 24' having a pin 25 supported thereby and on which is pivoted one end of a plate 26 secured flatwise to one side of the leg section I8 by the rivets 21. An angular extension 28 is formed on one edge of the plate 26 which is slidably engaged with a brace 29 pivoted at one end as at 30 to one of the frame members of the table sections and having a hook 3| at its free end engageable with the extension 28 to releasably secure the leg in its open position as shown to advantage in Figure 9 of the drawlngs.
Each table section also includes a top 32 which is pivoted at two of its edges on pins 33 to the inner side of the frame of the table section, the top being secured in an open position by a sectional brace 34. The free end of the top is releasably secured in a closed. position by means of a detent 35 secured to the under side of the top and engageable between a pair of spring fingers 36 secured to one of the frame members of the section of the table as shown to advantage in Figures 10 and 11 of the drawings.
To the under side of the top 32 are secured various forms of straps 31 utilized for attaching various table accessories indicated at 38 to the under side of each top of the respective table sections, the equipment thus carried by the table top being accessible by swinging the top into open position as shown in Figure 10.
Each of the legs l6 and H are adapted for folding into position against the under side of the top of the table adjacent one of the frame members thereof as shown in Figure 8 of the drawings and when the legs are in their folded position the table sections may be folded into the position as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The section of the table are secured in their folded position by means of hooks 33 and a handle 40 is also attached to the outer edge of certain. of the sections for conveniently carrying the table when in its folded position.
Removable pins 4| are employed to connect the adjacent edges of the hinged sections 5 and 6 and the sections 1 and 8 in their open positions.
It is believed the details of construction, advantages and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A folding table comprising a plurality of table sections, each section including a rectangular frame and a top, said sections being arranged in pairs, hingedly connected for folding inwardly with the undersides of the sections facing each other and the tops disposed outwardly and one of the sections of each pair also being pivotally connected to one section of the other pair for folding the upper sides thereof against each other, said pivotally connected sections being disposed inwardly of the other sections when the sections are in their completely folded positions, and legs attached to each section and foldable against the under side of the respective sections.
2. A folding table comprising a plurality of table sections, each section including a rectangular frame and a top, said sections being arranged in pairs, hingedly connected for folding inwardly with the undersides of the sections facing each other and the tops disposed outwardly and one of the sections of each pair also being pivotally connected to one section of the other pair for folding the upper sides thereof against each other, said pivotally connected sections being disposed inwardly of the other sections, when the sections are in their completely folded position, the top of each section being hingedly connected thereto along one edge, and legs attached to each section and foldable against the under side of the respective sections.
3. A folding table comprising a plurality of table sections, each section including a rectangular frame and a top, said sections being arranged in pairs, hingedly connected for folding inwardly with the undersides of the sections facing each other and the tops disposed outwardly and one of the sections of each pair also being pivotally connected to one section of the other pair for folding the upper sides thereof against each other, said pivotally connected sections being disposed inwardly of the other sections, when the sections are in their completely folded position, said pairs of sections being arranged with an edge in abutting engagement when in open position, clips securing the'sections against separation, and legs attached to each section and foldable against the under side of the respective sections.
4. A folding table comprising a plurality of table sections, each section including a rectangular frame and a top, said sections being arranged in pairs, hingedly connected for folding inwardly with the undersides of the sections facing each other and the tops disposed outwardly and one of the sections of each pair also being pivotally connected to one section of the other pair for folding the upper sides thereof against each other, said pivotally connected sections being disposed inwardly of the other sections, when the sections are in their completely folded position, said pairs of sections being arranged with an edge in abutting engagement when in open position, clips securing the sections against separation, legs attached to each section and foldable against the underside of the respective sections, one of said legs being positioned at each corner of the table when in open position, and one of said legs being positioned adjacent the center of the table.
