COOKING-STOVE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,174, dated August 17, 1880.

Application filed January 28, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, RUFUS J. KING and WALTER A. KING, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

Our invention relates to an improvement in that class of wood-burning cook stoves and ranges which have the hearth on a lower level than the bottom of the fire-box.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is front elevation of a cook-stove, showing the application of our improvements. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view, in side elevation, ofthe same.

Our improvements consist in providing a drop-hearth stove with a door of peculiar construction, containing in its upper portion a sliding register, and behind that an imperferate fender or wall for preheating the draftair and directing it down into the fire-box, and containing in its lower portion a swinging or sliding mica door about on a level with the rebottom.

The novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, as will be herewith set forth and specifically claimed.

A represents any wood-burning cook stove or range with its hearth B on a lower level than the bottom of the iire-boX. This hearth has an ordinary recessed sliding plate, D, of any suitable construction.

E is the door, hinged at one side, as represented, and containing in its upper part a sliding register, F, as shown, and in its lower portion a swinging or hinged mica door, G, about on a line with the bottom of the lire-box.

Just in the rear of the register F is a fender or imperforate plate, H, attached by its top and sides to the door E, so as to constitute a' part thereof, and to form a chamber for heating the entering draft-air and for directing` the same properly into the lire-box.

If desired, the mica door G,instead of swinging, may slide, and may be constructed in two parts, opening from the center.

The advantages of this arrangement and combination of parts are:

First, by the arrangement and use of the double doors, the main one of which contains a register and imperforate fend-er, the draftair can be heated before entering the nre-box by admitting it at the register, or it can be admitted cold by opening the sliding hearth or the mica door.

Second, by placing the mica on alevel with the lire-bottom all danger of smoking the mica is obviated, and the cook can thus always inspect the condition of the fire without the necessity of openinga door or removing a plate from the top of the stove.

At the same time, by opening the mica door the Iire can be conveniently raked, or coals for broiling may be taken out, without the necessity of opening the main door.

While we are aware that it is not new to employ double doors in cook-stoves or to employ drop-hearths, and wl1ile.fenders for preheating the draft-air have been attached to doors ot' different construction from ours, yet none of these features have been so combined as to produce the advantages stated above; and

We claim as newl. In a drop-hearth stove or range, the main door E, provided with an independently-opening mica door about on a level with the bottom of the fire-box, substantially as described.

2. In a drop-hearth stove or range, the main register-door E, provided with an independently-opening mica door about on a level with the bottom of the lire-box, and having an imperforate fender in the rear of the register, substantially as set forth.

3. In a drop-hearth cook-stove, the combination, in the front fire-box door, of the draftregister and imperforate hot-blast lining above and the mica windows below, substantially as set forth.
