HITCHING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 230,922, dated August 10, 1880.

Application filed April 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SEYMOUR S. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitch-Reins and Controlling- Ohecks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

Usually the devices heretofore employed for this purpose brought the strain mainly upon the back of the head, allowing the bits to drop from the mouth when the horse made much resistance. To obviate this defect l. have provided a hitch-rein or check which will bring the strain entirely upon the bits, drawing them up into the mouth, thus bringing the horse under control. I also provide an extra bit or strap intended to be placed over the upper front teeth when the horse is refractory.

B is the head-strap, and it is provided with the snap-hook O and metal frame 0. A is the pull-strap. It also has the snap-hook A and the metal frame B.

D is a thick rubber ring, intended to be slipped back to the metal frame B, pressing the latter upon the lower part of the loop formed by the pull-strap, and shown between C and B, thus preventing the pull-strap from being drawn up through the metal frames after the required tension has been obtained.

E is a lope-bit, to be placed over the upper This bit is fastened suitably to the snap-hooks O A, and may be made of any material answering the purpose.

The operation of my hitch-rein is as follows: Loosen the pull-strap, so that the head-strap may be suitably adjusted, fasten the snaphooks to the bit-rings, draw the pull-strap as tightly as desired, and slip the ring D back to the metal frame B, pressing the latter upon the loop, as above described. When the free end of the pull-strap is fastened the horse may be left standing or controlled for grooming. The operation of the rope-bit will be understood at a glance.

It will be seen that my device is a simple one, consisting, for ordinary purposes, of only two main parts, the head and pull straps with their attachments, as shown.

It will also be observed that the harder the horse jerks his head the tighter will the bit be drawn up, while, if he remains quiet, he is comfortably and securely held.

NVhen used as a halter my device has superior advantages Having fully described my invention, What I claim is- 1. The head-strap B, having the snap-hook G and metal frame 0, combined with the pullstra-p A, provided with the snap-hook A, metal frame B, and ring D, substantially as set forth.

2. The head-strap B and the pull-strap A, having the attachments shown and described, combined with the bit E, substantially as set forth.

3. In a hitch-rein, the combination of the head-strap B with the pull-strap A, whereby a loop is formed by passing the latter through the metal frames 0 and B, substantially as set forth.
