2 Clai This invention relates to an improved garment and particularly to an improved garment having a limb-covering portion which is readily adjustable as to length.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved garment of attractive appearance, having a limb-covering portion such as a sleeve or trouser leg which can be conveniently adjusted to vary the length thereof, so that it will fit persons of different sizes.

It will be appreciated that prior to my invention, the manufacturer of garments such as shirts, found it necessary to manufacture shirts, not only of varying body and neck sizes, but also of diiferent arm or sleeve lengths. This made it necessary for the manufacturer .to produce, and the retailer to stock garments of many different sizes. This same difliculty arose in connection with the manufacture of pajamas or other garments having varying leg lengths.

It is an object of the present invention to overcome difiiculties encountered in this respect and to provide a garment having sleeves or other limb-covering portions which may be readily varied or adjusted as to length.

A further object of my invention is the provision of an improved garment of the above character in which a part of the sleeve or other limbcovering portion may be readily removed.

In the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention- Fig. l is a perspective view of a garment embodying my invention, applied to the wearer, illustrating a part of one of the sleeves as removed from the rest of the garment;

Fig. 2 is a detail view partially fragmentary of one of the sleeves;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2 showing the means providing for the separation and also for the adjustment of .the sleeve, and showing the sleeve adjusted to its shortest position;

Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Fig. 3 showing the sleeve adjusted to successively longer positions;

Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating a modified form of my invention in which the adjusting means is positioned beneath the cufi of the sleeve; and

Fig. 7 is a further modified form of my invention in which the adjusting means is partially concealed beneath the cuif.

My improved invention is applicable to any garment having a limb-covering portion which it is desirable to adjust as to length. The invention is particularly applicable to shirts and accordingly in the accompanying drawing it is illustrated as embodied in a shirt.

The shirt is of conventional construction having a body portion I0 and a collar II, and buttons in the front as indicated at I2. The shirt also includes improved sleeves I4 which embody my invention.

Each of the sleeves is formed of an upper tubular portion I5 connected to the shoulder portion of the shirt and preferably extending to a point adjacent but above the elbow of the wearer. A separable tubular portion I6 is releasably attached to the lower end of the portion [5 and the lower end of the portion I6 is provided with a cuff I! held in assembled relationship by somereleasable fastening means such as the button I8.

The connection between .the two portions of the sleeve consists of a slide fastener [9 of conventional construction consisting of two rows of inter-engaging teeth attached to the lower end of the portion I5 and the upper end of the portion I6 respectively, and controlled by means of a slide. By moving the slide in one direction, the interengagement between the teeth may be released so that the lower portion IB of the sleeve may be removed, as indicated at the left-hand side of Fig. 1. By operating the slide in the opposite direction, the teeth may be inter-engaged so as to attach the lower portion of the sleeve to the upper portion thereof.

In addition to the releasable connection between the two portions of the sleeve, I also provide the sleeve with suitable means to provide for adjustment of the length thereof. This means may be provided in either the upper or lower portion of the sleeve, or if preferred, the sleeve may be formed in one piece and the adjusting means may be provided at any point throughout the length thereof.

In the preferred form of my invention, the adjusting means is provided a short distance above the slide fastener I9, and consists of a tuck 20 preferably projecting towards the inside of the sleeve so as to be substantially invisible, and provided with a plurality of spaced parallel rows of stitching extending therethrough. Each row of stitching may be separately released so as to vary the length of the sleeve.

In the preferred form of my invention, I provide three rows of stitching, indicated at 2|, 22 and 23, whereby the length of the sleeve may be adjusted to four different lengths.

In Fig. 3, the sleeve is illustrated as having the three 'rows of stitching extending through the tuck and accordingly the sleeve is at its shortest length. To increase the length of the sleeve and size or a fraction of a size, the upper row of stitching 2| may be removed so that the sleeve will be slightly longer and the tuck will have two rows of stitching extending therethrough as indicated in Fig. 4. The length of the sleeve may be further increased by removing the stitching 22 as indicated in Fig. 5 and may be increased to its maximum length by also removing the stitching 23.

In Fig. 6, I have illustrated a modified form of my invention in which the lower portion of the sleeve is indicated at I6 and the tuck 20' is illustrated as concealed beneath the cufi ll of the sleeve. The tuck is provided with three rows of stitching, 2i, 22 and 23', which extends through one portion of the cuif and is completely concealed from view by means of the cufi. By successively removing the lines of stitching, the length of the sleeve may be increased.

A further modification of my invention is illustrated in Fig. 7 in which the lower portion of the sleeve is indicated by the numeral [6", and the tuck 20" is partially concealed beneath a modified form of cuff H. The tuck is similarly provided with a plurality of rows of stitching 2|, 22", and 23", which may be successively removed to increase the length of the sleeve.

As illustrated particularly in Figs. 3 to 5 inelusive, the slide fastener l9, used to separably connect together the two portions of the sleeve,

may be concealed beneath a pair of flies or panels 24.

It should be understood, of course, that many modifications can be made in the described embodiments of my invention. Thus, my improved adjusting means may be applied to trouser legs or any other limb-covering portion of a garment. Also my adjusting means is equally applicable to sleeves or other limb-covering members formed in one piece.

I claim:

1. An article of wearing apparel comprising a body-encircling portion and a limb-encircling portion connected thereto. said limb-encircling portion comprising a tubular fabric member having a circumferential tuck projecting inwardly at one portion thereof and depending downwardly on the inside of the member, the said tuck being provided with a plurality of spaced parallel rows of stitching which may be separately released beginning with the one nearest the top to increase the length of the member.

2. A shirt comprising a body portion and a pair of sleeves connected thereto at their upper end, each of said sleeves having a tuck formed around the circumference at one portion thereof and depending downwardly on the inside of the sleeve, said tuck being formed with a plurality of rows of fastening means which may be separately released beginning with the one nearest the top to increase the length of the sleeve.
