Description

W. POSTER 1 PAPER CUP Dec. 8, 1942.
, Filed Jan. 9, 1940 INVENTORY ATTORNEYJ regame-, 1 4.
PAPER CUP William Poster, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Uly- Tulip O up Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application January 9, i940, Serial No. 313,051
2 Claims. (01. 229-) This invention relates to one-piece paper cups, formed from substantially circular blanks; the cups having pleated side walls tapered downwardly so that a quantity of them may be stacked or nested one within another for the purpose of storing or dispensing them from a machine.
More particularly, the invention relates to a novel structure of the upper or li-p portion of the cups whereby that portion provides greater comfort and ease of drinking when engaged by the lips of the user. Furthermore, the novel structure is formed such as to render it very rigid even under unusual pressure.
An object 'of this invention i to produce an article possessing the foregoing desirable, useful and structural advantages while at the same time permitting of rapid and economical production methods in their manufacture.
, This invention consists in the novel features, arrangements and combination of parts embodied by way of example in the article hereinafter described as illustrating a preferred form of the invention, and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Further objects, features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following specification and claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cup and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view showing in more detail the upper or lip portion of the cup viewed along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing, the cup shown is formed from a circular disc of relatively thin paper of a character well understood by those skilled in the art. The disc is folded, by wellknown mechanism, into cup form providing a sub-- stantially circular bottom I and pleated side wall 2. The pleats 3, commencing at the junction of the bottom and side wall, are longitudinally coextensive with the side wall which extends upwardly with a slight outward inclination until it reaches the point indicated as 4. At this point the sidewall 2 takes a relatively sharp outward flare forming a flange-like lip portion 5, which will be designated hereafter as the flange portion of the lip. This flange extends upwardly and outwardly from the point 4 and terminates in a pronounced head or rolled edge 6.
As will be noted in Fig. 2, the rolled edge 6 is substantially circular in cross section and is offset a substantially equal distance from the upper and lower surfaces of the flange portion 5 so as to surfaces of the flange i. The roll 8 is formed by tage. In short any method may be employed in forming a lip portion having substantially the same exterior contour as that of Fig. 2. Such a contour enables the user to grip the lip portion of the cup firmly and comfortably between his upper and lower lip, so that when the flange portion 5 (conveniently spaced outwardly from the main side wall) is pressed against the lower lip,
provide a substantial overhang of the respectively opposite sides of the roll 6 relative to the adjacent abruptly upwardly about a line of fold from the junction 4 of the side wall and flange will abut against the forwardmost tip of the lower lip while the rest of the flange, touching and overlying the upper surface of the lower lip, extends to the bead ii, which presses down upon the inner rim of the lower lip forming a seal between the Having thus described my invention with particularity with reference to a preferred embodiment of the same, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art, after understanding my invention, that changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I aim in the appended. claims to cover such changes and modifications as are within the scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A one-piece paper cup comprising a bodyv having a bottom and a pleated side wall, said pleated side Wall extending upwardly to and f orming a lip portion, said lip portion comprising a flange projecting upwardly and outwardly away from the side wall about a circumferential line of fold, said flange at its outer end extendinig of the flange so as to have substantial portions 01' the bead located on either side of the plane of the flange lip.
2. A drinking cup having a paper body oom- Prism 8 29 m 251 "3 terminating in a rolld paper 2,so4=,a':'a tion flaring outwardly away from the side wall so sam np a as to form an obtuse angle therewith and then extending sharply upwards so as to meet said head substantially tangentially and provide the inner periphery thereof, said head being substantiallycircular in cross section and having its cross sectional diameter disposed substantially in line with the outwardly flaring lip portion.
