HOLDER FOR MINERS LAMPS Filed Sept. 25, 1943 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Jane-s L. Resume;
Patented Apr. 23, 1946 I UNIT ED "STATES PATENT OFiF'l CE HOLDER FOR-,MINERS LAMP James Leo Hostetler, Leavenworth Kans. Application September 25, 1943,:Serial No, 503,819 I 2 Claims. (Cl. 240-60) This invention relates to holders for miners lamps, such as are commonly used for holding carbideand similar lamps securely in place upon the cap of a miner, and the main object of the invention is to provide a relatively simple and efficient form of holder for this purpose, that can be constructed of very few parts and at low cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a miners lamp holder that may be readily attached to conventional forms of caps worn by miners, the device being constructed substantially of a single length of wire of suitable gauge for thepurpose and bent upon itself to form and provide the several required elements necessary in such a lamp holder.
Another object ,of the invention is to provide a miners lamp holder thevmain portion whereof is constructed of a single length of heavy wire bent upon itself to form andprovide the several necessary elements of such a holder, and including a pair of spaced fingers arranged for attachment .to the visor orbill of a miners cap, a pair of spaced and horizontally aligned arcuate arms for resiliently engaging the body of the lamp, a pair of spaced stems for passing vertically up the front of the cap, a pair of spaced fingers for positioning horizontally over the crown of the cap, including means of attachment to the crown and a centrally positioned loop projected over the frontal margin or edge of the crownfor engaging the hook f the lamp.
With the foregoing objects in View, together with such other and additional objects and advantages as may appear from the specification, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings wherein is embodied certain preferred forms of the invention and structural features thereof, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a form of the invention as mounted upon a miners cap of a conventional type formed with a cylindrical crown portion and with a visor projected forwardly at the lower frontal margin thereof.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the form of the invention as shown in Figure 1, the holder being shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the invention as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a frontal elevation of the holder as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing a form of the invention designed for mounting upon another conventional type of miners cap, commonly styled the helmet type of cap, the holder portion ,of the lamp holder;
being-here shown aspmvided with anadjustable extension link, for supporting the device from the center of the crown ofthe (cap, rather than from the frontal ,portionthereof. v I
Figure 6 is atopplan view of the holder as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail on an enlarged scale of the slide. connector or connecting; sleeve, for .adjustably;connectingtheextension link tothe-main ThisinventionisaJamp holder-or bracket designed for attachment to any conventional form of miners lamp, and-the adaptations, as shown in the drawings, to two forms of such caps, will illustrate its ,adaptability to any conventional form of miners cap, withivery s lightifany modification.
tion is iormedalmost wholly of ,-a.-s ingle,-length of wire ofsuitablegauge, .thislength ofwirebeing bent uponv itself to ,forma pair of lower and latfingers beingziormedanthe ends-0f the length of wire, and the extremities of these 'endsbeing 1ooped..back;to;pr0vide eyelets I 0 adapted to re- -ceive rivets ll, whereby-the holder is ,secured frontally upon :the cap, by passing the rivets ,throllghthe eyeletsand through the visor 1 of zontal alignment and curved outwardly as shown,
and thus adapted to receive and hold the body of the conventional miners lamp as indicated at IT in dotted lines. From the point M at each side the wire is then extended upward a suitable space to provide the upper stems [8 which correspond in length to the height of the crown of the cap 5, or to the point l9 at each side. At this latter point the wire at each side is turned inwardly across the crown of the cap, or to the point 20 at each side where the wire is bent harply back upon itself to form the eyelets 2| and to complete the attachment fingers 22. The connecting bight 23 of the length of wire now spans the bases of the fingers 22, and it is looped outwardly at its medial point to form the open link 24 for engaging the lamp hook lla of the lamp [1. The fingers 22 are secured to the crown of the cap by means of the rivets 25 passed through the eyelets 2| and through the crown of the cap. or course, the construction of the device from the length of wire might begin at the medial portion thereof instead of: at the ends, and the link 24 might be first formed, and then the fingers 22, stems [8, arms 16, stems l3 and fingers 9, in reverse order to the procedure as first outlined.
In the use of this form of the holder the lamp I1 is inserted within the resilient arms 16, which readily spread for the purpose, and the hook Ha is inserted through the link 24, thus supporting the lamp securely in place, with the bottom thereof resting upon the lower attachment fingers 9. If found necessary or desirable, a reinforcing cross link 26 may be looped at its ends as shown at 21, around the lower portions of the upper stems I 8, to prevent these'stemsfrom spreading apart laterally too much, under the load ofan inserted lamp.
A modification of the invention isshown in Figures 5 to 7, the same being adapted for use upon another conventional type'of miners cap, ordinaril referred to as the helmet type of cap. In this type of cap the crown 6a is usually of rather flexible material, and there is a pair of open link 2111, 28, extended in overlapped relation rearwardly across the crown, the forward link 27a having its forward ends pivotally coiled around the connecting bight 23a overlapping the crown from the points |9a at each side. This coiled and pivotal form of connection of the ends is indicated at 29. In this form the attachment fingers 22 of the previously described form are omitted. An open connecting sleeve 30 embraces the overlapping links 21a, 28, and by the means of a short bolt 3| passed through the closed side 'of this sleeve and through the links 21a, 28, and
into threaded engagement with a relatively wide nut 3m positioned at the under side of the links, the elements may be readily and releasably locked to any adjusted degree of extension as may be found desirable; A rivet 32 is passed through the rear end of the rear link 28 and through the crown of the cap, and serves to secure the elements in placeupon the cap. In other respects the structural features of this form of the invenand shown, may be varied within the scope of the claims.
I claim: 1. In a miners lamp holder for mounting upon a miners cap having a frontal vizor at its lower margin, the said lamp holder being constructed of a single length of wire and including a pair of double-stranded and laterally spaced crown attachment fingers formed medially of the length of wire and adapted for positioning horizontally over the crown of the cap in transversely aligned spaced relation, the rear ends of these attachment fingers being formed as eyelets for securing the device to the crown, a forwardly disposed single-stranded connecting bight for the said fingers, an open link extended forwardly and centrally from the connecting bight of the crown attachment fingers and adapted for engaging the lamp hook of the miners lamp, single strands of wire extended vertically down the front of the cap in laterally spaced relation to transversely aligned medial points of the cap, a pair of double-stranded and arcuate lamp clamping arms extended horizontally forward from the cap in laterally spaced relation, single wire strands extended vertically downward at the front of the cap to the cap vizor in longitudinal alignment with the said upper vertical stands, and a pair of lower and laterally spaced vizor attachment fingers extended outward over said vizor, the extremities of said attachment fingers being looped back to form attachment eyelets for securing the device to the visor of the cap.
2. In a device according to claim 1, means for securing the eyelets of the crown attachment fingers and the eyelets of the visor attachment fingers to the crown and visor respectively, and means for reinforcing and bracing the said vertically extended strands of wire at the front of the cap.
JAMES LEO HOSTE'ILER.
