Description
(ModeL) J. F. KRAMER. Lamp.
No. 239,612; Patented April 5,1881.
Witnesses:
N. PE'ERS, PHOTO-UTNOGKAPKER, WASHINGTON. D. C:
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. KRAMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,612, dated April 5, 1881.
Application filed February 9, 1881 To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I. JOHN F. KRAMER,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of lamps known in the trade as side or wall lamps, and has for its object the production of a serviceable lamp at a reasonable cost;
Figure I shows an elevation, in perspective, of my lamp; Fig. 2, a horizontal section at the line was in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 shows a horizontal section at the line 3 y in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different figures.
. Aindicates the metal back; B, the metal strip forming the front and sides ofthe fount; (l, the metal sheet forming the top ofthe fount, D, the collar to receive the burner;
E, the lip upon each side of the metal back;
1*, the metal sheet forming the bottom of the fount, G, the front leg, H, the silvered glass; I, the lip upon the ends of the piece forming the front and sides of the fount; J, the lip on the edges of the top and bottom of the fount, K, the extension of the back below the bottom of the fount, forming the back legs; and q q indicate the points on the lip E,
between which the lip I of the piece forming with its ends turned outward to form lips I, to
pass within and be embraced by the lip upon the back A, between the points marked q q in (ModeL) Fig. 1. I then bend the strip B to the form which I desire to give the body of my lampfount, and, placing the lips I within the embrace of the lips E, I close down the lips E, as shown in Fig. 3, to secure the piece forming the front and sides in place. I then cut out a top, 0, and a bottom, F, corresponding in shape to the sides of the lamp-fonnt formed by the back and front portions described, and having cut out an opening in the top 0, to. receive the collar D of the lamp, and having turned down a narrow lip, J, all around the top 0 and bottom F, to inclose the edges of the strip B, and to provide where they join the back a larger surface to receive the solder, I secure them in place by soldering them; then,
having soldered on the lamp-collar 1) and front leg, G, I have completed the metalwork of my lamp. A reflector, H, of-silvered glass cut to the proper width and length, is then passed from the top down under the lips E E, upon the front side of the back A, and passes down to aresting-place upon the top of the fonnt O.
The reflector may be removed at will by sliding it upward until its edges pass out of the embrace of the retaining-lip E. I
A hole punched in the back A, above thereflector H, afl'ords a means of hanging the lamp against the wall, and the extension K of the back A, below the lamp-fount, of the same length as the leg G, enables its use as a tablelamp, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-- 1. A side lamp having the back A, provided with the lip E, front and side piece, B, top 0, and bottom F, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
2. A side lamp having the plate forming one side of the reservoir extending up above the top of the lamp-body, and provided with flanges for the reception of a removable reflector, as described.
.In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. KRAMER.
