UNITE STATES ATENT Fries,
' WILLIAM H. D. NEWTH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SETH BARNS, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,266, dated March 22, 1881.
I Application filed January 31, 1881. (No model.)
7'0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. D. NEWTH, of Detroit, WVayne county, Michigan, haveinvented an Improvement in Lamp-Lighters, of
which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices particularly designed for lighting kerosene-lamps without the necessity [O of removing the globe or chimney; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangements of the parts and their various con'ibinations, all as more t'ullyhereinai'ter set forth.
1 In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this s 'iecitication, and in which my device is shown in sectional elevation, A represents a suitable cylindrical chamber, provided with a removable cover or cap, B, in
which formed a vent-hole, a, which may be closed atJwill by the plate I) by means of the knob c. Projecting downward from the bottom of this chainberA is secured the tube 0, to the lower end of which is secured a burner,
2 5 D, provided with a vent, e, in any proper manner, care being taken that it is not a joint which would be affected by heat of the flame. The upper end of this tube projects through the bottom of the chamber A and into the same, and is secured to a tank, E, which, in turn, is secured to the inner wall of such chamber. This tank E has its head depressed, so as to form a cup upon its top, and through this head is a hole, 6, through which a wick is inserted into the tank. This wick F passes from this tank into and down the tube 0 tothe burner, which carries a flanged disk, (Z. The flange on this disk can be struck from a solid plate, or it can be made by making ra- 0 dial cuts in a round plate and then bending the tongues so formed downward.
Gis a handle secured at one side of the chamber A, and is adapted to receive the end of a wooden stick, H, so that the device can be used in lighting lamps which are in elevated 5 positions.
In practice the wick is inserted in the tube 0 and tank E, and the latter is filled with any proper oil,and the cover is placed over the chamber A, the vent therein being closed.
When it is desired to use the device for lighting lamps the ventin the cover is opened, the wick 1's lighted at the burner D, and the vent in the cover is left open, when the oil from the tank Ewill flow down the tube to the burner. This end of the tube, with the burner, is then inserted down the lamp-chimney to the lamp-wick, which it readily lights. The offlce of the flanged disk dis to prevent the extinguishing of the light while withdrawing the tube from the chimney.
What I claim as inyinvention is 1. In a device for lighting lamps, and in combination with the chamber A thereof, the tank E, tube 0, burner D, and wick F, substantially as set forth.
' 2. In a device for lighting lamps, and in combination with the chamber A thereof, the tank E, tube 0, wick F, and burner D, the latter of which is provided with a flanged 7o disk, (I, substantially as described.
3. A device for lighting lamps, consisting of the chamber A, cover B,provided witha vent,
a, tube 0, burner D, provided with a flanged disk, d, and wick F, constructed, arranged, 7 and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
