WIERWILLE. I V I Horseshoe Nail Clincher. v /,No. 238,822. Patented March.15,.l88l.
NFEI'ERS. FHOTO-LITHOGFQAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FBEDRIK WIERWILLE, OF COLUMBUS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO REUBEN H. ROLAND, OF SAME PLACE.
HORSESHOE-NAIL CLINCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,822, dated March 15, 1881.
Application filed September 11, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIK WIERWILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Pope and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Nail Glinchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
Myinvention has forits object the construction of a simple, convenient, and effective tool for clinching horseshoe-nails, and it obviates the necessity for using a hammer and clinching-iron'upon the tender part of the hoof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Flg. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, a sectional view showing in detail the eccentric hinge G and the set-screw H.
My invention consists in combining an ad- 2 5 justable toothed bit with a common form of blacksmiths tongs, and in regulating its pitch by means of an eccentric hinge and a setscrew.
Aand B are thejaws of the tongs. O D are the handles, and E the pivotal point. The outer end of the jaw B is furcated to receive the end of a bit, F, which is held in place by a pin, Gr, thereby forming a hinge, and adjusted (No model.)
by means of a set-screw, H, passing through the jaw B and bearing on the back part of the bit. 3 5
The front side of the bit is provided with a suitable number of teeth, a, for engaging with the ends of the nails, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The pivotal end of the bit F is constructed circular in form, with an eccentric forming part of the edge, and is so set as to engage the jaw andlimit theoutward move-, ment of the bit to the ends of the jaws.
The operation of my device is as follows: The nails having been driven home and the ends cut off, the smith takes this clincher in hand and applies the jaw A to the bottom of the hoof and the end of jaw B to the hoof, adjusts the bit F to the inclination of the hoof by means of the set-screw, and then applies the teeth to the protruding end of the nail, and, closing the handles, draws the end of the nail down, thereby clinching it without any hammering on the hoof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a blacksmiths tongs, the combination of thejaws A B, toothed bit F, and set-screw H, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in
