Description

IINrrED STATES PATENT -OFFICE.
JOSEPH KELLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEDICAL COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,507, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed January 7, 1881. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPH KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Medical Compound, of which the following is a specification.
This is a medical compound for the alleviation and cure of diphtheritic complaints, when taken internally, and for the alleviation and cure of burns, cuts, bruises, &c.,when applied externally. It may also be employed as a useful remedial agent in other diseases.
My compound consists of the followingnamed ingredients, in about the proportions set forth, namely gum-camphor,0ne and onehalf pound; saltpeter, one pound; spirits of turpentine, two pounds; Barbadoes tar or pinetar, three pounds; oilot' lavender, one pint; oil of origanum, one pint; oil of spike, one pint. These ingredients are prepared and compounded as follows: Put the saltpeter into the turpentine and let the mixture stand for about two weeks. Then add the camphor, and let the mixture stand for three or four days. After this add the tar, and in about a week mix together the three 0ils-lavender, origanum, and spikeand put the two mixtures together, agitating all thoroughly. When the compound has stood for about a week it will be ready for use.
1 give the above as the preferred method of preparing the compound, and I believe it to be the best; but I do not wish to confine myself strictly thereto, as I do not believe it to be absolutely essential; and so long as thein- .gredients before named, in about the proportions given, be employed, the described method of compounding them may be departed from to some extent without materially impairing the curative powers of the mixture.
Taken internally for diphtheritic affections, croup, gravel, 850., the dose should be from four to five drops for a child, and about a tea-spoonful for an adult. The amount of the dose will vary somewhat, according to circumstances, however, and there is no danger in taking a little more or a little less than the amount named. I prefer small doses, how ever, in treating diphtheria. .For external ap plication it may be applied as a liniment.
Having thus described my medical compound, and set forth the ingredients, the proportions, and the mode of its preparation and use, I claim-- A medical compound composed of saltpeter, camphor, turpentine, Barbadoes tar, oil of lavender, oil of origanum, and oil of spike, in about the proportions specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSE PH KELLER.
