FARM-GATE- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,486, dated March 8, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. CLAY, of Oregon township, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved gate for stock-farms, drove-yards, or other places where cattle are grazed or kept for sale, whereby the smaller stock can be separated at pleasure from the larger stock 5 and the invention consists of a gate provided with a hinged or pivoted lower portion, which is adapted to be raised and held at the required height to allow of the ingress and egress of sheep or swine, while the larger stocksuch as cows, steers, or horses-are prevented from passing through, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a front eleva' tion of my improved invention, showing the lower portion of the gate in a raised position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the main frame of the gate, which is hinged between the uprights or posts B B, said gate being provided with a lower movable portion, 0, which forms the lower part of the gate, and which is pivoted at one end to the lower frame of the gate, as shown at a, and is provided at the front or opposite end with a slotted upright, D. The slot in this upright extends through its center from top to bottom, through which project the stationary bars forming the upper frame of the gate, in such a manner that the lower movable portion, 0, is held upon the same line as the upper stationary part of the same. Upon each side of the upright D are cut notches or recesses b, which are adapted to catch upon the pins 0 on the sliding bolt E, to hold the lower portion, 0, up at the desired height when in operation, a suitable projecting knob or handle, d, being provided at the center of said upright, to assist in its easy operation. The gate A is hung to the upright or post B by means of semicircular plates F, having serrations or cogs f upon their outer rim, the plate upon the frame of the gate havingan overlapping flange, g, which rests upon the top of the plate secured to the post B, and the two plates connected to each other by a cross-bar, h, extending across the tops of the same, as shown, the cogs on each plate meshing into those of the opposite plate, to obviate the sagging of the gate at the front part.

In the operation of my improved gate, and when it is desired to separate smaller stock from the larger kind, the lower movable portion of the gate is raised upward to the desired height and the upright D held in place by the lugs or pins 0 on the sliding bolt E. By this means the smaller stocksuch as sheep or swine-can readily pass under the gate, while the larger stocksuch as cows or steersare prevented from passing through by means of the upper stationary part of the gate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a swinging gate, the combination of the upper stationary frame, A, with the lower movable portion, 0, which is provided with the slotted upright D, adapted to move upon the bars of the upper stationary frame, A, and provided with the recesses b, for engagement with the pin 0 on the bolt E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
