This invention relates to abrasive papers in roll form, and more particularly to abrasive papers intended not for the usual grinding or abrasive purposes, but for cleaning pots and pans used for cooking.
A particular object of this invention is the provision of an improved paper roll which with the addition of small amounts of water can be used to remove the dirt and grease remaining in cooking pots and pans and which will require a minimum of labor and material for that purpose.
As the base of my improved paper roll I provide an absorbent paper tissue in roll form, such as is commonly used for toilet and cleansing tissue, but of very thick material, and on one side of the roll I provide a thin layer of wax, such as paraffin wax, which is prominently attached to the roll, but does not penetrate to the interior thereof, the wax penetrating to the paper merely sufficiently to be permanently adherent thereto. On the surface of the wax there is then applied an abrasive powder which is made in the following manner:
I use as the base of this powder infusorial or siliceous earth of marked abrasive properties and this powder is sprinkled with a solution of a caustic alkali such as sodium hydroxide or with a solution of sodium carbonate to impart some.
alkaline properties to the same. After the particles of abrasive are coated with the alkaline liquid, the material is thoroughly dried and after drying is dusted on, or otherwise applied to, the wax surface of the paper roll. For convenience in use, the paper may be scored at intervals and a protective layer of tissue paper maybe applied to the abrasive layer, if desired. In using it is sufiicient to moisten the bottom of the cooking pot desired to be cleaned and then to rub the same thoroughly with the abrasive side of the paper, giving the alkali in the abrasive time to work on the fats or greases present. After this, the soft side of the roll containing the absorbent tissue is applied .to mop up the material in the pot or pan and the paper roll is applied for this purpose until a clean surface is presented.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A new article of manufacture useful in cleaning pots and pans comprising a sheet of absorbent paper adapted to be put up in roll form, a thin layer of wax applied superficially to one surface only of said paper, and an abrasive in powdered form applied to said thin wax layer, the abrasive side of the paper being adapted to be rubbed on a dirty surface to be cleaned and the abrasive-free, absorbent surface being adapted to clean up the dirt dislodged by the abrasive.
2. A new article of manufacture useful in cleaning pots and pans comprising a sheet of absorbent paper adapted to be put up in roll form, a thin layer of wax applied superficially to one surface only of said paper, and an alkalicarrying abrasive in powdered form applied to said thin wax layer, the abrasive side of the paper being adapted to be rubbed on a dirty surface to be cleaned and the abrasive-free, absorbent surface being adapted to clean up the dirt dislodged by the abrasive.
