In the event the type of seam is that which requires a folder or some other mechanism to dispose the material in proper position for stitching, such mechanism can be positioned in advance of the needles.` Highly satisfactry results have been obtained when two pieces of relatively wide `material, such as used in the manufacture of parachutes, were joined by a.'tailored French seam with the raw edges concealed vand stitched with two parallel rows of stitches extending longitudinally of the seam and passing through all the plies in the seam.

The nature of the invention will become clearer from the description of the illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the drawings, and wherein:

Referring nowA to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate like parts, the reference numeral I designates a known sewing machine head having a base l2 and a needle bar I4,which carries a needle carrier l carrying two needles I6. The sewing machine head is also provided with a presser foot bar I8, which carries a presser foot designed to cooperate with feed dogs 22 which pass through slots 24 of a removable cover plate 26., The cover plate 26- is also provided with apertures (not shown) which permit the penetration of the needles during the sewing operation'. A manually actuated lever 30 for elevating orlowering the presser foot bar is also provided. The reciprocating needle bar I4 is driven through a shaft V(not shown) by a pulley 32. A belt 34 driven from a well-known means `(not shown) drives the pulley 32. Ad-

jacent the pulley end of the machine there is provided a knurled head 36.

The sewing machine head, described immediately before, is of the standard, well-known two-` needle type.

In the illustrative embodiment of the invention to be hereafter described,` two pieces of materlal 31 and 38 are joined together by a tailored French seam 39, with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions froml the seam, as shown in Figure 5. With this in view, a folder 40 is adjustably and removably secured to the base l2 of the machine by screws 42. vThe folder 40 is of the type which, when the two edges of the material 31 and 38 are fed therethrough, will roll the edges thereof to form` the seamV 39, in which the folded portions are interlocked and the` rawedges concealed, and deliver the.- seam toithe needles for stitching, thereby producing a stitched seam of the type shown in Figure 5. Since the details of the folder form no essential part of this invention, further discussion thereof is unnecessary The material 31 and 38, folded by the folder 4!) to provide the tailored French seam 39 as previously mentioned, is fed through the stitching position beneath the needles I6, whereby the seam 39 is stitched by two parallel rows of stitching '44. As shown in Figure 5, the two rows of stitching penetrate all the plies constituting the seam 39 and are visible on both sides of the seam. The folder 46 is provided adjacent its exit end with a tongue 46 to aid in presenting the seam 39 in proper position and condition for stitching by the needles.

The attachment which constitutes one phase of the invention, and as shown in Figure l, is positioned on or adjacent the rear of the base I2. The attachment includes a cork roll 56 which is positioned above, but in cooperative relationship with, the work support and beyond (to the rear) of the stitching position to engage at least the seam 39 after it has passed through the stitching position and while on the work support. The roll 56 is securely and preferably also adjustably mounted on a sleeve 52 which encases and is secured, by a screw 53, to a shaft 54 which, as shown in the drawing, is disposed above the work support at the rear of the head ID and driven, as hereinafter described, from the pulley 32.

In one embodiment of the invention, the attachment is also provided with a rotary member 56 spaced from and to the right of the roll 50, as viewed in Figure 1',

` Referring now to Figure 7, the rotary member 56 comprises a tube 58 'of soft rubber which is slit longitudinally and intermediate its ends to provide a plurality of strips or ribs 60. One` end 62 of the rubber tubing (which, as is apparent from the drawings, is not slit) is secured to an enlargement 64 ofV a sleeve 66 formed of a hard material, such as vulcanized rubber. The other end 10 of the slit tube 56 (which also is not slit) is secured to a sleeve 14, also formed of a hard material, such as vulcanized rubber, and having an enlargement 16 against whichthe end 10 of the tubing abuts. The sleeve 14 is slidably .mounted on the sleeve 66 and is locked thereto,

after adjustment to the desired position, by the set screw 18. The sleeve 66 is secured to the sleeve 52, which is secured to the shaft 54, by means of a screw 86. For reasons which will become apparent hereafter, the sleeve 52 does not extend through the entire length of the sleeve 66 but only through a portion thereof, as shown in Figure '1.

`After the rotary member 56 is positioned on thesleeve 52 and secured thereto by means of the set screw 80,the sleeve 14 is then slidably moved on the sleeve 66 in a direction to longitudinally compress the rubber tubing 58 so that the strips thereof will be bulged outwardly to form spaced convex ribs. lDepending on the position of the sleeve 14 relative to the sleeve 66, the ribs 60 may be bulged to a greater or lesser degree, thedegree depending on the nature of the material to be engaged thereby. When the desired convexity of the strips 60 has been secured by the adjustment of the sleeve 14, the sleeve Y14 is locked and secured to the sleeve 66 by' means of the setscrew 18.

In the form shown in Figure vl, the boss 2|4 of the bracket 2|0 is positioned adjacent the arm 98 and the sleeve 66.

From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the attachment contemplates the seam-engaging roll 50 with or without the rotary device 56, and with or without the rotary device |50, as desired. The peripheral speed of the roll U is substantially equal to the speed of the material passing through the stitching'position, Vand the peripheral speeds of the rotary devices 56 and |150 are substantially the same as `those ofthe roll 50 though they maybe higher'or` lower and yet accomplish the intended'functions. Y

It is further to be noted that when the block 96 is moved with respect to the base |23 to render the roll 5|) and also the other rotaryv devices when used ineffective, the entire attachment (except forthe base |23) is moved. By making the belt 88 of a yielding elastic material, it need not be removed when the attachment is moved to inoperative position. When it is desired to entirely remove the attachment, the screws |24 are removed and the base |23, together with all the elements carried thereby, areremoved from the machine. f

Since it isobvious that various'changes and modifications may be made in the above description without departing from the nature or spirit thereof, this invention is not restricted thereto except as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said driving shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of'said head,

means to feed two pieces of material in positionfor stitching by said needles toform a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directionsv from said seam, a shaft disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head provided with a roll to engage the stitched material at the seam,`a ribbed roll positioned on said shaft laterally of and spaced from the seamen-gaging roll to engage the stitched material, the ribs of said ribbed roll being yieldable, and means driven by the pulley to'drive said shaft to actuate said roll and ribbed roll.

2. A sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said driving shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam withthe two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, a shaft disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head provided with a pair of ribbed rolls to engage the stitched material on opposite sides of the seam, a roll on said shaft spaced from and intermediate said ribbed rolls to engage the stitched material at the seam thereof, the ribs of said ribbed rolls being yieldable, and means driven by the pulley to drive `said shaft and simultaneously drive all of said rolls.

3. A sewing machine having a work support, ahead, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley .in driving relationship to said driving shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to f-eed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, a shaft disposed above the work support andato the rear of said head provided with a feed roll to engage the stitched material at the seam, a rotary feed device positioned on said shaft laterally of and spaced from the seam-engaging roll to engage the stitched material, means driven by the pulley to drive said shaft to actuate said roll and rotary feed device, strippers cooperating with said roll and rotary Afeed device, a stationary shaft, and means `to adjustably position said strippers on said stationary shaft. n

4. A sewing machine having ya work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving yrelationship to said driving shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, a shaft disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head provided with a feed roll to engage the stitched material at the seam and a pair of rotary feed devices, one on each side of and spaced from the seam-engaging roll `to engage the stitched material, means driven by the pulley to drive said shaft to actuate said roll and rotary feed devices, strippers cooperating with said roll and rotary feed devices, a stationary shaft, andmeans to adjustably position said strippers on said stationary shaft.

5.`A sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said driving shaft, said pulley and needle bar beingon vopposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, a shaft disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head provided with arroll to engage the stitched material vat the seam and a ribbed roll positioned laterally of and spaced from the seam-engaging roll to `engage the stitched material, means driven by the pulley to drive said shaft to actuate said roll vand ribbed roll, a stripper cooperating with each of said rolls, a stationary shaft, and means to adjustably position said strippers on said stationary shaft.

A sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said driving shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of` material extending in opposite directions from ysaid seam, a shaft disposed above the work support and to the rear said head and comprising a base to be secured to the work support, a shaft carried by said base and to be disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head, means driven from said pulley to drive said shaft, a roll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material at theseam thereof, a ribbed roll on said shaft laterally of and spaced from said seam-engaging roll to engage the stitched material, the ribs of said ribbed roll beingyieldable, and means to position and move said shaft and rolls to operative or inoperative position.

13. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam,- said attachment to be mounted to the rear of said head and comprising a base to be secured to the work support, a shaft carried bysaid base and to be disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head, means driven from said pulley to drive said shaft, a roll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material Vat the seam thereof, a pair of ribbed rolls mounted on saidshaft to engage the stitched material, the seam-engaging roll being disposed intermediate said rolls and laterally spaced therefrom, the ribsof said ribbed rolls being yieldable, and means to position and move said shaft and rolls to operative or inoperative position.

14. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one ormore needles,means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driviner shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, said attachment to be mounted to the rear of said head and comprising a `base to be secured to the work support, a bearing pivotally mounted on said base, a shaft in said bearing and to be disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head, means driven from said pulley to drive said shaft, a ro-ll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material at the seam thereof. a ribbed roll on said shaft and positioned lat^ral1y of and spaced from the seam-engaging roll to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material, a stripper to cooperate with each of said rolls, a stationary shaft. means to adjustably position said stripper on said stationary shaft, and means to maintain said bearing in position to dispose said shaft and rolls in operative or inoperative position.

15. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with the two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, said attachment to be mounted to the rear of said head and comprising a base to be secured to the work support, a bearing pivotally mounted on said base, a shaft in said bearing and to be disposed above the work support and to the rear of said head, means driven from said pulley to drive said shaf-t, a roll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material at the seam thereof, a pair of ribbed rolls on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material, the seam-engaging roll being disposed intermediate the ribbed rolls and laterally spaced therefrom, a stripper -to cooperate with each of said rolls, a stationary shaft, means to adjustablyposi-tion said stripper on said stationary shaft, and means to maintain said bearing in position to dispose said shaft and rolls in operative or inoperative position.

16. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed two pieces of material in position for stitching by said needles to form a seam with vthe two pieces of material extending in opposite directions from said seam, said attachment to be mounted to the rear of said head and comprising a base to be secured to the work support, a block pivotally mounted on said base, a shaft carried by said block, means driven from said pulley to drive said shaft, a second shaft driven by the first shaft, a roll on said second shaft to cooperate with the work support andengage the stitched material at the seam thereof, and means to maintain said block in position to dispose said second shaft and roll in operative or inoperative position.

17. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft,

An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needlesmeans toreciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, meansto feed material in position for stitching by said needles, said attachment comprising a shaft to be disposed rearwardly of the head, means driven by said pulley to drive said shaft, and a ribbed roll on said shaftlto" cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material laterally and spaced from the stitched portion thereof, said ribbed roll comprising a `tubing. formed of a yielding material and provided with slits extending longitudinally of the tubing and intermediate the ends thereof, a pair of sleeves, each end of said tubing being secured to the respective sleeves, and means to permit movement of said' sleeves relative to each other in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of saidtubing :to compress said tubing.

An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said'needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley'in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, lmeans to feed material in position for stitching by said needles, said attachment comprising a shaft to be disposed rearwardly of the head, means driven by said Pulley to drive said shaft, and a ribbed roll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material laterally and spaced from the stitched portion thereof, said ribbed roll comprising a tubing formed of a yielding material and provided with slits 'extending longitudinally of the tubing and intermediate the ends thereof, a sleeve to be disposed on and secured to said shaft, a second sleeve slidably disposed on the first-named sleeve, one end of said tubing being secured to the first-named sleeve, the other end of said tub-y ing being secured to the second sleeve, andmeans tofsecure said sleeves together, said sleeves being disposed relative to -each other to longitudinally compress said tubing.

21. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said.v needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle lbar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed material in position for stitching by said needles, said attachment comprising a shaft to be disposed rearwardly of the head, means driven by said pulley to drive said shaft, and a ribbed roll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material laterally and spaced from the stitched portion thereof, said ribbed roll comprising a tubing formed of a yielding material and provided with slits extending longitudinally of the tubing andv intermediate the lends thereof, a pair of sleeves disposed on said shaft and driven thereby, each end of said tubing being secured to the respective sleeve, and means `to slidably move one of said sleeves on said shaft relative to the other in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of said tubing to compress said tubing.

22.' An attachment for a sewing machine having a Work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle bar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle bar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed material in position for stitching by vsaid needles, said attachment comprising a shaft to be disposed rear-v wardly of the head, means driven by said pulley to drive said shaft, and a ribbed roll on said shaft to cooperate` with the work support and engage the stitched, material laterally and spaced from the stitched portion thereof, said ribbed roll comprising a tubing formed of a yielding material and provided with slits extending longitudinally of the tubing and intermediate the ends thereof, a sleeve to be disposed on and secured tosaid shaft, a second sleeve slidably disposed on the first-named sleeve, one end of said tubing being secured to the first-named sleeve, the other end of said tubing being secured to the second sleeve, and means to secure said sleeves together, said sleeves being disposed relative to each other to longitudinally compress said tubing, each of said sleeves being provided with a groove adjacent the end thereof stripper fingers cooperating with each groove, a stationary shaft carrying said fingers, the finger cooperating with the sleeve being securedto the rotating shaft and the finger cooperating with the other sleeve being slidably disposed on said shaft whereby upon adjustment of the slidable sleeve the slidable finger will also be' adjusted.

23. An attachment for a sewing machine having a work support, a head, a reciprocating needle bar carrying one or more needles, means to reciprocate said needle lbar including a driving shaft and a pulley in driving relationship to said shaft, said pulley and needle b ar being on opposite ends of said head, means to feed materialinposition for stitching by said needles, said attachment comprising a shaft to be disposed rearwardly of the head, means driven by said pulley to drive said shaft, and a ribbed roll on said shaft to cooperate with the work support and engage the stitched material laterally and spaced from the stitched portion thereof, said ribbed roll comprising atub ing formed of a yielding material and provided with slits `extending longitudinally o-f the tubing and intermediate the ends thereof, a pairl of sleeves disposed on said shaft and driven thereby, one of said sleeves being secured tothe shaft, each end of said tubing being secured tof the respective sleeve, and means to slidably move one of said sleeves on said shaft relative to the other in a direction parallel tcthe longitudinal axis of said tubing to compress said tubing, each of said sleeves lbeing provided with a groove adjacent the end thereof, stripper fingers cooperating with each groove, a stationary shaft carrying saidv of the slidable `sleeve the slidable finger will also be adjusted.
