MPETERS, PHOTO-LITMDGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D C intron;
VIGTORIRATHKN'ECHT, OFVOHICAGO, ILLINOIS:
SOFA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters' Patent No. 237,774, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed August 14, V1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VICTOR RATHKNECHT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of sofas or lounges which are provided with an adjustable arm; and it consists in the novel construction,arrangement, and combination of devices herein described for adjusting the movable arm in different positions, and whereby its movement is guided and the wing is caused to swing in a fixed plane without wabbling, so as to prevent the upholstered front surface of the wing becoming worn by rubbing or scraping against the back of the sofa as the saine is raised or lowered.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is afront view of a sofa provided with myimprovement, showing the adjustable arm in a somewhat elevated or nearly vertical position. Fig. 21s a similar view, showing the adjustable arm somewhat extended or lowered; and Fig. 3 is a back view of the same, showing the devices by which the arin is adjusted and secured in position.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts wherever used throughout all the gures of said drawings.
In said drawings, A represents the body of the sofa; B, the back, and C the adjustable arm, which turns 011 the pivots or bearings c and c', by which the said arm is supported and secured to the frame-work D ofthe sofa. The inner or arm end of the bodyAis upholstered full and square, as shown at A', so that the round upholstered pivotal end of the arm (l will form a smooth and close junction with the or slide just behind the wooden back B of the sofa.
H is a quadrant-shaped casting, secured by screws or other suitable means to the back or exterior surface of the wing G, the outer edge or circumference ot' which casting is provided with a notched groove, h, the notches It being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. This casting is also provided with a lug or projection, h2, which acts as a safety-stop against the corresponding projection, j, on the casting J, which is secured in any suitable manner to the back B of the sofa.
K is a bent lever, pivoted at K to the casting J, and-provided with a notched end, k, adapted to fit and slide in the notched groove 7L and engage with the notches h. This lever K is provided at its other end with a shank or bolt, L, which serves to hold in position the spiral l. When the lever is operated by pressing down upon the handle M the shank L passes through a hole or slot in the lip m, upon which the spring rests. By means of this pivoted notched lever or pawl K, in connection with the quadrant-shaped rack H, I am enabled to support the arm C by a direct pull on the casting J, and consequently there is no tendency to wrench or twist said casting off, and thus making a very strong and durable device.
The operation is as follows: 'lo lower the arm C, press on the handle M, which raises the notched end of the lever K so that it will not engage in the notches of the rack, when the arm may be lowered to any position desired. To elevate the arm all th at is required is simply to push it up, as the notches h are so made that in this direction the notched end of the lever K will slide over them.
What I claim isl. The combination, with a sofa having a movable arm and quadrant wing, ofthe pawlbearing casting J, adapted to be attached to the back of the sofa, and having guide j projecting over the edge of the quadrant wing, and located, also, so as to serve as a stop to limit the movement of arm, and the ratchet H, secured to the quadrant wing and provided with projection h2, to engage with guide j, substantially as specified.
2. The pand-bearing casting J, adapted to end ofthe pawl, whereby the same is kept in be attached to the back of the sofa, and proposition on the ratchet and the Wing caused 1o vided with guide j, projecting over the edge to Swingin :Mixed plane,substantiallyasspeciof the movable Wing, in combination with ccnfied.
5 trallypivoted paivl K,l1aving guiding devices VICTOR RATHKNECHT.
L and m at its handle end, and lche ratchet H, Witnesses: secured to the movable Win g and provided with EDMUND ADCOOK, a groove or shoulder, h, for confining the lower E. C. LURTZ.
