This invention is directed to sewing machines, more particularly to mechanism associated with various parts thereof whereby adequate and Valuable control of the functions of the machine may be obtained.
The present invention is directly related to the subject matter of my Patent No. 2,175,247, issued October 10, 1939, entitled Button sewing machine, and Patent No. 2,175,248, issued Octoberv 10, 1939, entitled Construction of button sewing machines.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a machine which is adapted to sewbuttons and to be used for other purposes in which the functions of the machine are exclearness;

It is also among the'objects of the present invention to provide a machine which is capable of adequate and rapid operation under widely varying conditions, including the use of the machine on buttons having two and four holes, with the use of various-patterns of stitches for attaching the same to garments and. thelike.
It is further among theobjects of the present invention to provide a construction of sewing machine which is simple, sturdy, easy to operate,
which is readily adjustable bythe operator of the machine, and which has a number of automatically operated parts.
The present invention as applied to a button sewing machine involves a structure wherein there is the ordinary reciprocating needle for forming stitches anda button clamp for holding the button to be sewed onto the garment. In
accordance withthe present invention, the needle may be caused to vibrate with each stitch transversely of its normal'vertical movement. Cooperating therewith is the button clamp which may be caused to remain stationary during the vibra tion of the needle, or which may in itself be caused to vibrate with each stitch. The invention further provides that the clamp may vibrate in a horizontal plane during the sewing operations. Cooperating therewith, the. needle may have only its no'rinalvertical movements without any lateral movements, or the needle may be caused to shift laterally one or more times during a cycle for sewing on a button.

The sewing machine comprises the usual bed I, standard 2, overhanging arm 3, and sewing head 4. A driving pulley I3 is mounted on shaft 5 and is contiguous with idling pulley I2. A belt shifter I4 is securedto sliding member I5 operated by pin l6 secured to stop member. I'L' Said stop member is normally operated by. the functioning of a latch l8 connected up by suitable linkages 19 to a controller cam 20 secured on auxiliary shaft 2!, as described in Patent No. 2,175,247. A worm and gear 22 and,22" associated with shafts 5 and 2|, respectively, serve to provide the necessary movement of cam 20. The operation of this mechanism is to cause the stop I! to engage a notch in collar ll secured to shaft -5 .at

Briefly, the structure is adapted for use in sewing either a two hole or four hole button. In this instance, pin B'Ishould be vals for sewing through the secondtw holes of a four hole button, the clamp continuing to oscillate the button for the sewing through the second pair of holes.
At the end of a stitching cycle, cam 20 causes operation of stop H, which movement is coordinated with the shifting of the needle bar, since both cams 20 and 89 are fixed to the same shaft 2|, V
As the stop I! moves upwardly, it pulls follower 99 downwardly first through the angular portion of slot IOU, which shifts plate l! to the left of Fig. 1, causing operation of knife I07 to cut thread. Simultaneously therewith, there is do ward movement of rod 98 which, through linkages 91, 95 and H3, presses upwardly on extension Ill thus raising the button clamp simultaneously with the stopping of the machine. In Fig. 1 the positions of the elements are shown after the completion of the aforesaid operation. To start the machine, chain H5 is pulled down causing follower 99 to move up and knife I 01 to be retracted.
Although I have described the invention setting forth a single embodiment thereof, it is apparent that various changes and modifications in the details thereof may be made within the spirit of the invention. For instance, although the machine has been described in connection with its use for sewing buttons, it is quite obvious that at least some of the parts of the mechanism may be used with machines for other purposes. In place of the button clamp, there may be provided the ordinary Dresser-foot which is so linked with the remainder of the mechanism as to be automatically raised at the end of a stitching cycle, These and other changes may be made in the details of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, the scope of the invention being defined by the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at predetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached to said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam rotated by said main shaft, a follower cooperating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an inter- 4 mediate point to a fixed support and being pivoted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively.
2. In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at predetermined .intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached to said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam rotated by said main shaft, a follower cooperating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit. reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an intermediate point to a fixed supportand being pivoted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively, said, intermediate pivot of said link being adjustable to vary the throw of said bar.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at predeteroperatively attached to said barand having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam ro- I tated by said main shaft, a'follower cooperating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower'into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an intermediate pointto a fixed support and beingf-piv oted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively, said intermediate pivot of said link being adjustable to vary the throw of said bar and means for rendering said intermediate pivot inoperative so that motion of said cam is trans-' mitted to said link but not to'said bar.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and. stitch-formingmechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar atpredetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively. attached to-said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam ro tated by said main shaft, a follower cooperating operating leverconnected therewith, a cam rotated by saidmain shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower i'n'to'oscillation of said needle bar, said link comprising an oscillating lever, one end being pivoted to said follower and the other end being pivotally connected to one end of said first lever, and said second lever having an adjustable intermediate pivot adapted to' be rendered inoperative so that motion of said cam merely causes oscillation of said second lever about its pivotal connection with the first lever.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at predetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached to said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam rotated by said main shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an intermediate point to a fixed support and being pivoted at its ends tosaid lever and follower respec tively, said intermediate pivot being adjustable to vary the throw of said ban-said pivot includ-' ing a stationary grooved guide, a movable block having a pin operating in said groove, and a slot in said link into which said block is movably fitted.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at predetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft I operatively attached to said bar and having" an mined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft" operating lever connectedtherewith, a cam rotated by said main shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle, bar, said link being pivoted at an inter- 1 mediate point to a fixed support and being piv- 1 oted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively, said intermediate pivot being adjustable .to vary the throw of said bar, said pivot including a stationary grooved guide, a movable block hav- 1 ing a pin operating in said groove, aslot in said link into which said block is movably fitted, and
a screw threaded through said link and into said block for adjusting the same.
8. .In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming 'mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocatingv needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at-predetermined intervals-comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached tosaid bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam rotated by said main, shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connecting linkobetween said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating v motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link beingpivoted at. an intermediate point to a fixed support and being pivoted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively, said intermediate pivot being adjustable in said;fixed support to vary the range ofsaid oscillating shaft, and means selectively operable for reciprocating said lever at predetermined intervals to shift said bar.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main 1 shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means forv shifting said needle bar atpredetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached to said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam r, tated by said main shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connecting link between said fol-1- lower and said lever to; transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an intermediate point to a fixed support-and being pivoted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively, means for adjusting the position of said intermediate pivot to vary the throw of said link, said intermediate pivot being adjustable in said fixed support to vary the range of said oscil lating shaft, and means selectively operable for reciprocating said lever at predetermined intervalsto shift said bar.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby including a reciprocating needle bar, means for shifting said needle bar at predetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached t said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a camrotated by said main shaft, a follower co-operating with said earn, a connecting link between saidfollower and said leverjto transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an inter mediate point to a fixed support and being pivoted at its ends to said lever and follower respectively, said support having a grooved guide, said intermediate pivot adjustably held in said guide to vary the throw of said link, said intermediate pivot being adjustable in said fixed support to vary the range of said oscillating shaft, andmeans means for shifting said needle bar atpredetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached to'said bar and having an operating lever connected therewith, a cam rotated by said main shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connecting link between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, said link being pivoted at an intermediate point t a fixed support and being pivoted at'its ends to said lever and follower respectively, said intermediate pivot being adjustable in said fixed support to vary the range of said oscillatingshaft, and means selectively operable for reciprocating said leverat'predetermined intervals to shift said bar, including a pivot pin extendingfrom said lever and removably held in a reciprocable support member. f

means for shifting said needle bar at predetermined intervals comprising an oscillating shaft operatively attached to said-bar and having an operating lever connected therewith,'a cam rotated by said main shaft, a follower co-operating with said cam, a connectinglink between said follower and said lever to transmit reciprocating motion of said follower into oscillation of said needle bar, a button clamp, and means secured to said link to cause vibration of said clamp including a. connector bar having one end pivoted in said follower, a yoke pivoted to the other end of said connector bar, an operating rod adjustably secured to said yoke, means for clamping said rod in said yoke, and a connection between said rod and said clamp having means for adjusting the throw of said clamp.

In a sewing machine having a rotating main shaft and stitch-forming mechanism operated thereby, a cam operated from said shaft; a stop adapted to be released by said cam for stopping the operation of said machine,'a retractable member for holding fabric being sewed, a linkage connected to said stop and to said member, whereby operation of said stop causes lifting of said member and release of said stop causes lowering v of said member, said linkage including a plate having an angular slot therein, a linkage pin operating in said slot, a thread cutter secured to said plate, the movement of said pin causingshifting of saidcutter and then lifting of said member.
