J M RHODES Miter ing Machine. No. 237,409. Patented Feb. 8,1881
N PETERS. FHOTOL|THOGRAPNER, WASHlNGTON. n. C,
PATENT FFICE.
JACOB M. RHODES, OF FREDERIOKTOVVN, MISSOURI.
MlTERlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,409, dated February 8, 1881.
Application filed August 19, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J noon MELCHI Bnonns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredericktown, in the county of Madison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mitering-Machines; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven* tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention has relation to miter-machines; and it consists in the improved features of construction and combination hereinafterfullydescribed, andparticularly pointed out in the claims.
The objects of my invention I attain by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure i represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved machine; Fig. .2, a top view thereof, and Fig. 3 a front view of the apparatus.
The letter Aindicates a table or bed supported upon suitable legs or standards B,and constructed of any proper material. To the forward end of the said bed or table is securely attached the guide-plate O, of metal, formed with a semicircular aperture, D, having a horizontal edge, E, flush with the top of the table or bed, to support the molding or article to be mitered. To the said frame is fulcrumed, at F, the lower end of a strong lever, G, which carries, firmly attached to it, a semicircular knife, H, adapted to cut to the right or left to form a corresponding miter. The lever has attached to it a guide-block, I, which sits over the upper edge of the plate 0, and travels thereon, holding the lever at all times close up to the plate, so as to keep the cutting'edges of the knife accurately to their work.
The letter K indicates a detachable graduated gage, adapted to be secured by means of a pin, L, to the top of the table or bed, in either one of two apertures, M, therein, so that its forward end may rest against one side or the other of the metallic plate 0 and give the said gage the proper inclination to feed the molding, which is placed at the edge of the gage and fed forward or held against the same, so as to present the end of the molding to the knife. The molding is mitered right or left by changing the position of the gage from right to left upon the table, as above indicated.
The letter N indicates a sliding block arranged to travel upon .guideways P at the sides of a rectangular opening, R, in the bed or table, at the rear of the same. Against the front of said block, below the bed of the table, bears a flat spring, S, which keeps said block back to the rear of the table in a normal position. To the forward part of said block is attached one end of a strap, T, which passes over a pulley, U, journaled below the top of the table, at the front of the opening therein, and has its other end secured'to a lever,V, pivoted at its forward end to the forward support of the bed or table, its rearextendin g through a slot in therearsupports of the table, and adapted to play vertically therein. The said slot has at one edge a series of lockin g-tceth,VV adapted to engage one edge of the lever and hold it in any desired position. To the top of the block, which is formed with a miter-extension, A, in front, is secured a rectangular steel clampingplate, with one corner presented to the front of the machine. The front sides of said plate are serrated, so as to firmly clasp any article presented to them. Directly in front of the clamping-plate, and firmly secured to the table or bed, parallel to the front sides of said plate, are two clamping-jaws, B, adapted to operate with the clamping-plate to hold two oppositely-mitered pieces of molding securely together until the joint can be secured by glue or other fastening devices.
The operation of my invention will be apparent from the above description. To miter the molding the strip is placed with its edge to the gage, which has been properly arranged at the suitable angle to the table of the machine. The end is then brought properly under the knife, which is brought steadily down so as to make a clean cut at one motion. When the pieces are properly mitered they are arranged on the table with their mitered ends together and their forward sides against the stationary clamps on thetop of the table.
lhe lever is then operated to move the sliding block, which carries the clamping-plate forward, so as to firmly secure the two pieces of molding in position to be united by means of glue, nails, or any convenient fastening devices.
The square vise herein shown and described is not claimed in this application; but the right to make a future separate application is hereby reserved.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a miter-machine, the combination of the lever G, provided with the semicircular knife H and guide-block I, and pivoted to the front of the table A at F, with the semicircular-guide-plate 0, having apertureD and horizontal edge E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a miter-machine, the combination of the lever G, carrying" semicircular knife H and guide-block I, and pivoted at its lower end to the table A at F, and the semicircular guideplate 0, aperture D, and horizontal edge E, with the guide-gage K, having pin L, and the table A, having perforations M, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature. 30
in presence of two witnesses.
J. M. RHODES.
