Description

i' STAWENT OFFlCE.
A. C. LANING, OF WILKES-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,690, dated April 19, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. C. LANING, of Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and luseful Improvement in Reciprocating Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longtiudinal section of my invention taken in the line m, F ig. 2. Fig. 2, is a side view of the same with the valve chamber bisected longitudinally as in-v dicated by the line y, y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This 'invention relates to an improvement in reciprocating pumps and is designed to render the same capable of being used in an inclined or horizontal position equally as well as in a verticalone.
The invention is more especially designed for mining and similar purposes, where pumps are frequently necessarily inclined and often placed in a horizontal posit-ion.
The ordinary reciprocating pump is admitted to be preferable, when placed in an upright position, but cannot be advantageously used i nan inclined or horizontal position, in consequence of the wea-r produced by the plunger bearing on and working against the side of the cylinder, the wear soon causing the pump to work very imperfectly. By my invention this difficulty is obviated.
mg with it at one end. This chamber B, is provided with two valves a, and Z), the valve a, opening inward and the valve I), opening outward.
C, is a cylinder which is fitted on the pipe or tube A,- and is allowed to slide freely thereon. This cylinder C, is closed at its outer end and has a tug iron c, attached for the purpose of connecting a rod to operate the cylinder. To the inner end of the cylinder a stuffing boX D, is attached, for the purpose of allowing the cylinder to work water tight over the pipe or tube A. The cylinder C, has projecting plates or bars d, at its sides, said plates or bars being fitted on guides e, e, which are attached to uprights f, said uprights being secured to a plate F, to which the pipe or tube A, is also secured.
From the above description it will be seen, that by giving the cylinder C, a reciprocating motion the water will as the cylinder C, moves outward in the direction of arrow l, be drawn through valve a, and as the cylinder moves in the opposite direction, indicated by arrow 2, the water will be forced through the valve b. It will be seen that the pump may be placed in an inclined position and in a horizontal or vertical position and work equally well in either case. The ordinary reciprocating pump cannot be thus used as the weight of the piston when the pump is inclined soon produces wear and materially aects its operation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent is The stationary pipe or tube A, valve chamber B, and reciprocating cylinder C, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set-v forth.
A. C. LANING.
