Patented Jan. 2, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TATTING SHUTTLE Louis A. Silliman, Chester, 001111., assignor to C. J. Bates & Son, Chester, Conn., a firm composed of Hamilton 0. Bates, Wells 0. Bates, and Hamilton C. Bates, Jr.
I Application October 8, 1943, Serial No. 505,497
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in tatting shuttles.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a tatting shuttle which may be made from plastic material which is not only light in weight but the components of the shuttle may be easily. and readily secured together to provide a unitary device.
According to special features of the invention,
' means is provided in the side plates of the shuttle Fig. 3is a sectional elevational view on the line 33 of Fig.1; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view at a larger scale on the i line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The shuttle of the inventionis represented generally by 2 in the drawing, and it includes side plates such as 4 and a central cylindrical barrel member 6.
The parts described may be made from plastic material and be secured by any suitable cement or adhesive.
The parts may be readily formed from various kinds of plastic which may not only be of various colors but such material is more or less yieldable or resilient so that when adjacent ends of the plates are normally in contact the end portions 1 of the plates yield sufilciently forthe passage of thread therebetween.
The barrel member 6 has an opening 8 therethrough as shown and the plates 4 may, if desired, be relatively curving or crowned as shown.
Openings or depressions I are provided in opposite sides of the shuttle which when the shuttle is held in the normal way between the fingers and at the same time permit rotation or oscillation of the shuttle between the fingers.
These depressions may be formed by providing openings in the side plates I'll prior to securement of the said plates to the barrel 6 or they may be formed by a drilling operation subsequent to the securement of the side plates and barrel.
In the form of the invention shown, the side plates are curving or crowned transversely but the same will not be necessary in all cases and as statedthe side plates more particularly at their narrower end portions are yieldable so as to permit the passage of thread therethrough when the tip ends are normally in engagement.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential 6 characteristics thereof. Hence, the present emindicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein. a
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: a
As a new article of manufacture, a tatting shuttle comprising in combination, a pair of substantially identical elongated side plates formed from sheet plastic material tohave opposite sides tapering from central portions to pointed opposite 'ends thereof and being curved from said central of said plates in engagement, the outer faces of said plates provided with openings and the opposite ends of the barrel provided with depressions therebelow cooperating therewith to form sockets for receiving the tips of the fingers.
