Application October 21, 1943, Serial No. 507,199
2 Claims. .(Cl. 2404) The invention relates to a radio program holder, and more particularly to a built-in radio program trays and illuminating means for radio-s.
The primary objectof the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the case for a radio has the same built therein, and radio program listings can be held thereby, so that any selected program can be viewed at will, the device when pulled outwardly of the case effects illumination of an electric bulb which is disposed to enable a person to readily read or inspect the selected program, and on pushingthe device within the case, the light is extinguished.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same does not detract from the appearance of the radio case, and is an adjunct thereto, so that programs will be at hand when using the radio,
and any number of listings of programs can be conveniently stored within the radio case, to avoid losing the same and to be convenient for service.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the radio pro-gram listings are hidden from view when not in use, and are retained in order, to avoid lying around loose, as is generally 'the condition, and a saving of time i assured for the selection of a determined program, the latter being readily and easily accessible with dispatch and when placed in the device will be maintained in good order.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in the Working thereof, in no manner detracting from the general appearance of the radio of fanciful design, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a radio showing the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a top plan view showing the device opened. I
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view with the device in closed position. v
Figure 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan partly in section showing the device in full closed position.
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the device about to reach a full closed position.
Figure 6 is a similar view showing the device almost fully closed.
Figure '7 is a plan view of the device removed.
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 8-8 of Figure 7 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 9 is a sectional view taken on the line 9-9 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the case of a radio of any approved or well known construction, having in its base I0, centrally thereof, and crosswise of the same a way II for a slidable tray-like drawer l2, preferably made from metal, although it may be made from any other suitable material, having a front panel l3, while opposite side edges M of this drawer [2 are formed withrunners or suspension flanges l5. These runners or flanges I5 slidably fit in guide channels or grooves 16 provided in confronting faces of retaining strips I'I constituting a part of the base [0 of th case A. The front panel 13 carries a hand-hold or knob I8 for the easy pulling of the drawer [2 to an open outward position or the pushing of the said drawer closed inwardly of the way II. The floor iii of the drawer l2 has fitted thereto a releasing clip 20 in which are adapted to be detachably engaged sheets of material having listings of broadcasting programs, so that on opening of the drawer I2 a selected program may be had and by tuning-in th station on the radio the program can be heard.
At the front of the case A of the radio there is arranged a socketed electric light bulb 2| which is included in a current circuit built into the case and opened and closed by a lever switch, the lever thereof being denoted at 22 located in the path of a spring striker arm 23 disposed at one inner corner of the drawer l2, so that when the latter is fully closed the lever 22 will be shifted opening the circuit to the bulb 2| for extinguishing its light. When the drawer I2 is fully opened the striker again moves the lever 22 for the closing of the circuit and thus lighting the bulb 2| for illuminating purposes, so that a person may readily identify the program listing desired contained within the said drawer. This spring striker rides th guide strip l1 next thereto for releasably engaging and disengaging the lever 22 at the proper periods when opening and closing the drawer l2 for the operation of the said lever 22 in turning on and turning oil the electric lighting bulb 2| as is clearly shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings.
The bulb 2| is covered partially by a reflecting shade 24 which is removably fitted to its socket and is adapted to cast the light from the said bulb in the direction of the drawer when the same is fully opened or pulled outwardly.
The clip 20 is of the spring jaw type and is fastened in place, preferably at the longitudinal center of the drawer I2, in any suitable manner.
. The front panel [3 of the drawer is congruous with the ornamentation or finish of the case or cabinet 10 of the radio, so as to maintain a neat and attractive appearance in its entirety.
The drawer I2 is handy for use in holding listings of radio programs or for other purposes as may be found desirable. The electric bulb 2| is lighted and extinguished automatically on the opening and closing of the drawer l2, respectively.
What is claimed is: 1. An illuminated program'drawer for radio cabinets, comprising a drawer body having suspension flanges for slidable reception in ways in the base of the radio cabinet, a source of illumination for the drawer having a lever switch attached to the radio cabinet adjacent the rear end of the drawer in its closed position, a spring plate switch actuating arm carried by the drawer and normally held out of the path of the lever by the ways, and releasing from the ways when the drawer is closed to open the switch, and close the switch when the drawer is opened.
2. An illuminated drawer for radio cabinets having a base, comprising a drawer body bearing suspension flanges for slidable reception in ways in the base and forming part of the base, a source of illumination on the radio cabinet above the drawer having a reflector shade for casting light on the drawer, a lever switch attached to the base adjacent the rear end of the drawer in its closed position, a spring plate switch actuating arm carried by the drawer and bent to engage the lever as the drawer is opened and closed to close and open the switch respectively, and the switch actuating arm engaging the ways when the drawer is opened to be moved out of line with the switch lever when in passive position: while the drawer is in process of being opened and closed.
