parts rigidly together suchpartsmayybefreadily separated ordetached if it is desiredto take the 10 bed down.;` n
:Another objectpof therinvention is to form one or two beds, uone above the other, thus permitoccupied by a single bed.`
The present invention is designed more particularly for use in army camps but it can `also be found advantageous for use in hotels, summer houses, on' transport and` hospital ships" or in 20 other places where space is at a minimum.
. This bed was primarily designed for its` simplicity, cheapness, lightness, `durability and the obviation from all danger of collapse while in use, and for thefurther reason that loose or spare parts will be eliminatedwhen this bedis used as `a singleor a two-decker.,
While from a standpoint ef `vitai materiale it.
is preferred to construct the frameof wood, it is l Stoiber understood that the invention is not to be limited to the employment of` this material, as it will be obvious that, if preferred, the same n "ideas may be carried intoeect `by making the frame of metal or other suitable materials.
With these and other objectsin View,` as will appear, the invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts of a single or i two-decker bed, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part 40 of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated a form of the embodiment ofthe invention, whichfembodies the essential features thereof. vIt is also te be understood thaethese 45 maybe departed `from in variousdetails of construction and proportions of parts withoutde parting from the spirit of the` invention, and in the drawings: H
Fig. 1 is` a side elevation of the invention in use 50 as a single bed. n n Fig. 2 is a similar View as a two-decker bed. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. llooking in the direction of the.` arrow.
Fig. 4 is a similar View of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a 'fragmentarysectional View,` of the "means ,fonassembling.the frame` of the bed.
In the, form.0f ,bed herein shown, `there are presented twoftiers `orqbeds1 divided by ;a .central rail into two ,separate bed sections, the occupant `ofqtlie upper bed beingprevented `frominteriering with the occupant -of thelowerbed by-,means oa central rail. l C .i n
` ;.Referring;to` the drawings in-` detail, IIlaand, I I w designate `the .head` and footsectionsof the; bed
the foot section I I but when the bed is Ltotbemsdd as a two decker, as shown inFig. `2, the bed I3 `will utilizetwohead sections III and the bed Il` will utilize twofoot sections II. This isdonej to [give the occupant of bed I3 suillcient head room and air space andto prevent interference of `the occupant of the upper bed with the occupant of `the lower bed.
`Referring more particularly to the headsection IIJ which in this instance is` composed of two corner posts I5 secured together by any wellknown means, (such as dowels D) by braces I6 and a top board I8 at points I'I, the top board is designed to project above andbeyond the corner posts I5 as shown at I9. This is done in order` that the top board I8 can t into a transverse groove 20 formed at the bottom of the corner post 2i of the footsections II. `'l'he foot'section II, likethe head section I0, is composed of two corner posts 2| secured together by any wellknown means, (such as dowels D)` by braces 22.
` The head andfoot sections I0 and II respec-f tively are joined ,together by side rails 23 having slats 24 rigidly secured thereto. The rails 23 are y joined'together by side `rails 25 which are adapted to rest;A onblocks 26 secured to the cornerposts I5.and` 2|. This construction forms a frame which can be moved as a unit and thus less time is required to assemble the bed as` a single or two decker.
In Fig. 5 where the foot sections II are taken as an illustration, the means for joining the frame composed of side andend rails 23 and 25 respectively is more specifically shown, as is also shown` the corner block 21, which is placed in the corner of the` frame and` held imposition by nailsN.` The corner block 21 strengthens the frame and prevents it from moving or shifting out of shape.
The bolt 28 is inserted throughthe post 2I1in a suitable opening but is screwed intothe end rail 25 and `the side rail 23. When the bolt 28 `is '55 screwed into the sidewrail 23, it will engage a nut' that the nut can sink into the post and thus present a neater appearance as well' as omit any.
projections on which to catch bed clothing or garments.
It will be seen from the foregoing description.
that while the device of the present invention is of exceedingly simple construction, it will be thor,
oughly efcient and durable in use and by reason of the manner in which the parts are associated the, danger of breakage or disarrangement in use will be reduced to a minimum.
From the foregoing it isl thought that the conf struction, operation and many advantages of the herein-described invention' will be apparent to those skilled in theart without further description and it will be understood Ithat various changes in the size, shape, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.v
Having thus described the "invention, what is claimed as new and desiredl to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Ina double deck bed, the combination of a lower bed having head and foot sections of uniform height and having upwardly projecting corner-posts on each section, said sections each including a board-like member connecting and projecting above the corner posts, and an upper bed having `end sections including corner posts sub- ,r stantially shorter than the posts of the lower bed and having transversely slotted feet,l the posts of the upper bed resting on the posts of the lower I'- bed with the projecting member entering the slots,y all the head and foot sections having detachable connecting means at uniformV distances from the `lower ends of their corner posts, said board-like members forming headboards for the beds, whereby the beds are capable of being reassembledas separate beds, each having a high head section and a low foot section.
y 2. A bed having a removable head section having corner posts and a yheadboard `projecting above said posts and a removable foot section having corner posts substantially shorter than those of the head section and having transversely slotted feet, whereby the bed may bev reassembled in combination with another similar bed vto form a double deck bed, with both of the end Vsections having headboards on the lower bed` and the other bed placed on top with its slottedfeet engaging the headboards.
