REAPlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,346, dated January 4, 1881.
Application led March 29, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, LEOPOLD MAY, of Ungarisch-Ostra in Moravia, Empire ot` Austria, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Reaping-Machines or Improved Reaping-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to form a simpler, lighter, and stronger reaping -machine; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical, and Fig. 2 a horizontal, section with parts broken away. Fig. 3 shows the levers for controlling the rake and reel mechanism. Figs. 4 and 5 are other views of parts of the machine. Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 show parts of the rake and reel mechanisms. Fig. 13 is a side View, and Fig. 14 a plan view, ofthe entire machine.
In all the figures the same letters or numbers indicate the same partsthat is to say:

A vertical frame or standard, B, has a hollow axle, 2, projecting from its outer side, on which is mounted the large road-wheel A, while on its inner side it carries a vertically-adjustable bracket, H, the end of which curves downward and is connected by a hinge-joint, 21, to the inner end of the cutter-beam 11 of the platform F, the outer end ot' which is supported by the small road-wheel Gr. The platform F is thus capable of being turned up on its hingejoint 21 to a vertical position, so that the machine may occupy7 very little width when passing along narrow roads. For this purpose the bolt 22 is withdrawn, and the small road-wheel G is removed from its axle on the platform F and is placed on one, 19, provided on the bracket H, after turning up the platform, so that the end of the axle 19 projects through the hole 20. The outer end ot' the curved bracket H is supported on the ground by a small roller, 15. It is made vertically adjustable, so as to regulate the height of the knifebar 9, by means ofa hand-Wheel, 18, on a screwspindle screwing through the bracket H and carried in bearings 16 and 17 on the frame or standard B.
On the extended hub 1 of the main roadwheel A is a large and a small bevel-wheel, C D, both formed in one casting, running loose on the boss, but capable oi' being geared there- 85 to by a sliding clutch, M.
The large bevel-wheel O gears with a bevelpinion, 3, formed on the crank-plate E, that works the cutter-bar 9, the latter being connected to the crank-pin 6 by a pitman-rod, 7, formed of two separate rods, 7 7, whose inner ends arc pivoted to a head connected by a strap bolt to the crank pin, while the outer ends are connected to the cutter-bar by a universal joint, so as to allow of the platform F with the bar 9 being turned up, as before described, without having to disconnect the pitman-rod 7. Vhen in this position the clutch which drives the bevel-wheel C, imparting motion to the cutter-bar 9 from the road-wheel A, is put out of gear by means of a rod, 33, passing through the hollow axle 2 of the latter, and

connected to a lever, 40, at its outer end, while the inner end is connected to a lever, 36, and fork actuating the clutch M. The axle 2 has h'xed on its outer end a strong horizontal lever or arm, 43, the end of which is connected by a link, 50, toa hand-1ever,49, pivoted to a bracket, 47, on the draft-pole 45. Thus, on raising the hand-lever 49 the arm 43 is moved so as to turn the axle 2, and with it the frame and platform carried thereby, in such a manner as to cant the front ot' the platform F, and consequently the cutter-bar 9, up from the ground, so as to make them clear any stones or other obstructions on the ground while reaping. By depressing the hand -lever 49 the knife bar is canted downward, so as to cut the corn at any desired height. When adjusted to the desired position the hand-lever 49 is fixed by a pin passing through a quadrant, 5l, on the before-mentioned bracket 47 of the draft-pole 45. This bracket projects from the outer side of the draft-pole, and is curved round the large road-wheel, A, so as to embrace the end of the axle projected beyond the latter. Another bracket or strap, 46, xed to the draftpole embraces an extension ofthe hollow axle 2 on the inner side ofthe standard B, so that the draft-pole 45 is carried at the level of the axle.
The smaller one, D, of the two before-mentioned bevel-wheels on the axle 2. gears with a horizontal bevel-wheel, J, carried by the standard, and having 011 the circumference of its upper side a number of brackets, 24, to which are pivoted the reel and rake arms or rakes K, that are thus lnade to revolve over the platform F for feeding the corn to the cutter-bar 9 and then delivering the cut corn from the platform F. These arms are formed of wood bent into the form of loops, to the lower part of which are fixed rake-teeth. The ends 25 of the arms,beyond their pivots, carry rollers 26, which bear upon a xed cam-plate, L, which is carried by the standard B, and is of such a shape that as the rakes K pass round they are raised to a vertical position when passing the standard, the drivers seat, and the horses, and are made to descend as they approach the cutter-bar, after which they pass horizontally over the platform and are then raised again.
The cam-plate L has a movable hinged part, 27, which, by means Of a spindle, 30, and arm 29, working in a slot, 31, therein, can be raised or lowered, so as to cause the reel or rake arms either to maintain their horizontal position in passing over the platform F, and thus deliver the corn asit is cut, or to be suddenly raised again after passing the cutter-bar 9, so as to allow the cut corn to accumulate to any desired extent on the platform F before delivering it. This action is regulated by the driver b v means of a hand-lever. 41, connected to a second rod,34, passing,Y through the hollow axle 2, and connected at its inner end to the before-mentioned spindle 30, that works the movable part of the cam-plate L.
At the outer end of the finger-beam is fixed an upright, 12, of U-shaped section, which serves as attachlnent for the bracket of the axle to the small road-wheel G, and also for the inclined bars 13 14, that serve to raise and divide the standing corn.
Iclaim- 1. In a reaping-machine, the combination, with the main frame B, having hollow axle 2, the drive-wheel A, the bevel-wheels G D, pinion 3, crank-plateE, pitmau 7, and the cutterbar, of mechanism, substantially as described, to throw the cutter-bar out of gear with the main drive-wheel through the medium of aclutch, M, when said cutter-bar and parts connected therewith are to be tilted to a Vertical position and hung from the main frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the main frame, cutter-bar, grain-platform, and finger-beam having opening 20, and the grain-wheel G, of an intermediate supporting-bracket, to which said finger-beam is hinged, and the axle 19, that passes through said opening 20, and is provided with a bearing for said grain-wheel when removed from the platform, and the latter, together with the cutting devices, is tilted to a vertical position, substantially as and for t-he purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the overhanging adjustable bracket-arm H, the grain-platform, cutter-bar, and finger-beam hinged to said bracket at 21, of the locking-bolt 22, all arranged and operating as shown and for the purposes described.
4. The combination of the main frame B, having a hollow axle, 2, the drive-wheel A, the bevel-wheel G, pinion 3, crank-plate E, pitman 7, cutter-bar 9, lever 40, rod 33, clutch M, and lever and fork 36, all constructed to operate substantially as described.
5. In a reaping-machine, the combination of the main frame B, carrying the rake and reel mechanism and having a hollow axle, 2, the arm 43, bracket 47, link 50, segment 51, level` 49, bracket H, the grain-platform, cutter-bar, and tinger-beam hinged to said bracket, as set forth, all arranged and operating to tilt or cant the cutter-bar, for the purpose specified.

draft-pole 45, the strap 46, bracket 47, tiltingrod 4S, levers 43 and 49, link 50, and segment 51, all combined, arranged, and operating substantially as shown, and for the purpose specitied.
7. The combination of the main frame provided 'witli a tubular axle,2, the adjustable bracket H, the main drive-wheel A, having an extended tubular hub, the bevel-wheels C D, cast in one piece, mechanism, substantially as described, for operating the cutter-bar and rake-arms, the clutch M, rod 33, lever and fork 36, and hand-lever 40, all arranged, constructed, and operating substantial! y as and for the purposes specified.

erating as described, and the slotted cam-plate L, of the pivoted segment 27, slotted at 31, and mechanism, suhstantialbT as set forth, for operating the segment to change the path of the rake-arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. The combination, With the rake-arms, operating as described, and the camlate L, slotted at 32, of the pivoted seglnent21,slotted at 31, the arm 29, spindle 30, crank 37, rod 34, hand-lever 41, and the main frame having a tubular axle, 2, all arranged, constructed, and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
10. The combination of the rake-arms carrying Wheels 26, the bevel-Wheel J, the camplate L, the main frame B, having a tubular bearing for said bevel-wheel and cam-plate, and the hollow7 axle 2, the bevel-Wheels C D, cast in one piece, the drive-Wheel A, the clutch M, lever and fork 36, rod 33, and lever 40, all arranged, constructed, and operating substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
