Description

Nov. 21, 1944. L. a. BARTHALOT 2,363,040
SAFETY RAZOR Filed Oct. 1, 1942 Patented Nov. 21, 1944 SAFETY RAZOR Leon .Gon tran Bart halot, Buenos Aireadr gentina Applicationoctober 1, 1942, Serial No.4 6-Qfl3l a In Argentina August 29, 1942 safety razors, andparticularly to safety razors of the type usingblades having two cutting edges.
The advantages of the blades having two cutting edges are well: known, sincethey are equivalent to two razors. However, due to the manner in which the present safety razors are made, both cutting edges are available at all times, which leads to indiscriminate use of both sharp edges during a shaving operation, and therefore the fulljbenefit of said advantages is not obtained.
Also, inasmuch as such safety razors have 'two active fronts, the structure thereof does not ofier a complete shaving service and their sole function is to remove the heard or hair, without being of any service inthe preparatory steps there,- of. 'Ihus, after applying the lather, the user must remove same partially from certain portions of the face, particularly those where ,a cutting line should bedefined, 5,1 th case of the side whiskers, mustache, etc. In theucase of ordinary razors, theshaver generally uses for this purpose the back of the razor, in order to remove or scrape away the lather; butinasrnuch as double front safety razors have no means suitable for this operation, it isnecessary' to use the handor other independent means, and this complicates the shaving operation considerably.
The above-mentioned drawbacks are overcome in a very simple manner b the present inventlon. For this purpose, the present invention provides a complementary structure consisting in an extension serving both to shield one cutting edge of the blade, and to offer a back suitable to act as a lather remover in completing the preparation said back or lather remover as an auxiliary ele- 'one of the fronts of the safety razor, so that in presenting only one cutting front, the razor will be used in an orderly manner, so asto leave one of the cuttingedg'es of the blade as a spare for use after the first cutting edge has been completely used.
A still further object of the invention is to render possible said controlled use of the blade 2 Claims. (011 36-34.)
V This invention relates to improvements" in" by, means ofindications providedon the blade for the purpose of distinguishingone cutting edge from the othensojas to use them ineorrelative order. Thus, the maximum use is made of each blade. Other objects and advantages will become apparent irom the course of the following description, when read in conjunction with the aocom- 'panying drawing illustrating the invention by way of example and in apreferred embodiment, and wherein; a
Fig. 1' is a side view of a safety razor of the type using blades having 'two cutting edges-Qshowing the general structure thereof, and the shield whichis integral with therazor guard.
"Fig, 2 is a plan view of the safety razor head, showing the manner "in which the rib shields one of the cutting edges or the blade.
, Fig.3 is a view of another embodimentof the invention, "wherein the shield is constituted by a removable piece. a
Fig-411s a perspective 'view of a safety razor of the type shown in Fig. 3, with the pieces taken apart and showing theremovable shield "provided with means for securing same to the safety razor head.
"The same reference characters "indicate likeor corresponding parts *or elements throughout the differentiigures. j i x As may be seen from the drawing, the safety razor head is constituted by a guard 11 and press plate b, the latter havin fixed thereto a screw I or other suitable means for coupling the assembly to a handle 0, in order to secure said guard a which is progressively adjusted by said 'press plate b upon screwing same to said handle.
A double cutting edge blade (1 is located between said guard a and press plate b, as shown in Figs. 2 and'3.
Said guard a is suitably curved, thereby bending the blade d in order to obtain the desired inclination of the sharp edges 2 and 3, The underside of press plate I) is correspondinglycurved so as to suitably set the blade against the guard.
As in the case of the ordinary safety razors, said guard a is suitably toothed.
According to the improvements subject of the present invention, the safety razor is combined with complementary means whereby one of the cutting edges of the blade, indicated by the-reference numeral 4, remains disabled or shielded. Thus, only the front 5 of the razor remains in service. For this purpose, the razor head is provided with a shield e. forming part of said guard a or otherwise included in the assembly; so as toeffectively shield the respective cutting edge of blade d. Said shield e is superposed upon said guard in the corresponding front, presenting an extension 6 extending beyond the normal level of the sharp edge of the blade, whereby said cutting edge will remain surrounded or partially covered by said extension 6 of shield e, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Said shield e is also-provided with a bluntedge 1, serving'as a'scrapen'and herein termed lather remover, in view of the purposes for which itis v intended. I
In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, the shiel e is constituted by a special structure given to the front 4 of guard a. This structure consists in replacing the toothed edge by an extension of a given cross-section providing a projection 6 serving to shield the cutting edge 3 of blade d, and also a projecting blunt edge 1 serving as a lather remover.
In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4, the shield ,e also comprises a projection 6 and blunt'edge vIf coinciding with the guard at, but in this instance the shield e is not integral with said.
guard, but is integral with a base 8' having a shape suitable for adapting same against the lower portion of guard a'.' Said base 8' is provided with at least one perforation 9 through which the screw or stem 1' passes, so that while being removable, said base 8 may be readily:
assembled with. the remaining parts ofthe safety razor, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Thus, the shield e, which may be fixed to one of the pieces forming the head of the razor. or
removable, occupies the front edge of the front 4, so as to effectively shield the cutting edge 3 and also present a blunt edge. 1' serving as a lather remover.
With this addition the safety razor can be used to'carry out in amore complete manner the shaving operation, and after the lather has been applied it will not be necessary to use other auxfront, indicated by the reference numeral 5, the shaver can only make use of the sharp edge 2 of blade d, leaving sharp edge 3 for further use.
Thus, if the sharp edges 2 and 3 are suitably and details will occur to those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the inven- What is claimed is:
l. A safety razor construction of the typ using blades 3 having two cutting edges, comprising a tion as clearly set forth in the appended claims.

said head comprising a guard and a press plate between which the blade is secured when the head is on said handle, and a shield member secured between said head and handle andineluding a portion extending to one of the fronts of said head, saidshieldmembe'r terminating at said front in a rib having a, projection extending toward and over said front into shielding relationship with respect to the adjacent cutting edge of said blade, said rib being also provided with an oppositely directed projection terminat ing in an edge essentially parallel to said cutting edge and constituting alather remover.
