i claims; ua-14o This'jinvention relates to roving'orspinning frames in which roving is drafted between draw; ing rolls or 'betweenlong-draft aprons. Insuch machines, lint or fly adheres to the rolls'or aprons andmustbe continuously collected and removed.
. Both f xed clearers and freely rotating clearers have been used for this purpose but without complete success. Bunches of fly and lint gradually accumulate on the fixed clearers, which bunches are frequently dislodged and em ter the rovingor yarn. On the other hand, the
freelyv rotating clearers have no scraping nor frictional action and will not remove closely adhering lint or fly, particularly from long-draft aprons.
It is the general object of our invention to provide a clearer for such purposes which will combine the good features of both fixed and rotating clearers and which will be more effec tive than either typeof clearer.
To the accomplishment of this general object, we provide a .clearer roll which is alter- Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional end elevation,
taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation showing 7 our improved clearer-associated with long-draft mechanism. Referring to Figs. 1' and 2, we have shown a portion of a lower'or driven drawing roll 10 having the usual fluted portions ll by which the drafting is. performed in association with the usual cushioned top rolls.
Our improved clearer roll R comprises a roller I5 having gudgeons It in its opposite ends and fabric-covered provided with cushioned .or clearer portions ll, each of which portions may engage two of the fluted drawing roll portions H. The gudgeons I6 are supported in vertically yieldable bearings by which the clearer roll R is pressed against the drawing roll l0.
These yieldable bearings may be in the form of U-shaped springs 20, as. shown in Fig. 3, the
lower end of eacnbeing fixedto af stationary part at 2| and theupper end of each being bent to form an open' bearing for a gudgeon Hi. All of the construction thus far described is of the usual kind provided for freely rotatingclearers.
We additionally, provide the clearer "rollR- -with a plurality of"a'ngula'rly' spaced'pins which co-act with a ring or band 26 mounted on the drawing roll l0 between two fluted portions II and having a notch 21 at one point in its periphery. The band 26 rotates with the drawing roll l0 and is of such diameter that the outside of the band normally engages one of the pins 25 as shown in Fig. 2 and prevents rotation of the clearer roll, which thus remains fixed during the greater part of each revolution of the drawing roll 10. y
When the notch 21 reaches the pin 25 which is in engagement with the band 26, the clearer roll will be advanced one space and until the next pin 25 engages the band 26. The clearer roll R is thus alternately fixed and rotated, and
each intermittent advance movement presents a fresh cushioned or fabricsurface to the drawing roll, thus effectively removing the lint or fly therefrom.
In actual operation our improved clearer has proved very effective and satisfactory,.as it possesses sufficient frictional contact to remove all of the lint and fly from the drawing roll. It is also advanced intermittently, thus firmly pressing the accumulated lint or fly against the roll and preventing dislodgement thereof to pass into the roving or yarn.
In Fig. 3 we have shown our improved clearer embodied in a long-draft apparatus comprising front rolls F and F, middle rolls M and M and back rolls B and B. A lower apron A and an upper apron A are mounted on the middle rolls M and M and pass around the usual fixed guide bars 49. Our improved clearer roll R engages the lower surface of the lower or driven back roll'B and the outer surface of the lower apron A and thus frictionally removes the lint and fly onboth of these surfaces during the periods in which it is held from rotation. The means for intermittently advancing the clearer rollR' may be the same as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for the roll R. r
The ring 26 may be formed integralwith the drawing roll ID or may be attached thereto in any convenient manner, asby the two-part assembly construction shown in the prior patent to Brouwer, No. 1,993,729.
Having thus described two embodiments of our I for successive predetermined intervals while said drawing roll continues to rotate.
2. In a roving or spinning frame, a driven drawing roll, a clearer roll associated therewith, a notched band on said drawing roll, a plurality of circumferentially spaced pins on said clearer roll positioned to be engaged and intermittently and alternately held and advanced by said notched band.
3. In a roving or spinning frame, a drawing roll continuously rotated in one direction, a clearer roll in direct and positively driving contact with said drawing roll and rotated therewith, and ,means to positively and periodically interrupt the rotation of said clearer roll by said drawing roll.
4. In a roving or spinning frame, a driven drawing roll continuously rotated in one direction, a long-draft apron mounted thereon and actuated thereby, a clearer roll, means to cause said clearer roll to yieldingly engage said apron, and intermittently operating driving connections between saiddrawing roll and said clearer roll through which said clearer roll is given successive and positive intermittent advance movements in the same surface direction as that part of said apron engaged therewith and definite and positive intervening rest periods.
5. In a draft mechanism for textile fibers, the combination of two pairs of drawing rolls both positively and continuously rotated in one and the same direction, long-draft aprons on one pair of said drawing rolls, a clearer roll engaging the lower apron and the other lower drawing roll, and means to give said clearer roll successive positive but intermittent rotative motions in the same surface direction as that part of said apron engaged thereby and intervening positive rest periods, said clearer roll being thereby rendered efiective to wipe the working surfaces of said lower apron and said second lower drawing roll.
