SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,168, dated January 4, 1881. V v Application filed June 3,1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDRIOK W. LAVIGNE, of Olaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olothes= Reels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in clothes-reels in which the clamp for confining the clothes or article hung over the arms of the reel is arranged in hinged sections; and the object of my improvement is to afford greater convenience as well as reliability in retaining the article upon the swinging bar or arm than is now accomplished with clothespins or a single clamp extending the entire length of the arm.

In the drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the reel. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached view, showing the end of clamp and its fastening device.

A is the central post to support the reel; B, the bars or arms intended to support the article to be suspended. They are designed to be attached to a ring, 0, which is made to revolve around the post A in such a manner that they shall hax e a free elevating movement, so that their outer extremities may be easily elevated, if desired, when not in use. The bars are sustained in position by braces D, the outer extremities of which are hinged to the bar B about midway its length, the other-extremity being pivoted to the ring 0, which can be freely raised and lowered and turned around upon the standard A. 1 prefer to make the rings 0 0 in the form of a cog- Wheel, the inner extremities of the bars and their respective braces being inserted into the spaces between the teeth or cogs of their respective rings, and there held by a wire which encircles the rings, thus forming a hinge for the elevating movement of the bars or braces. The upper ring, 0, has only a circular motion around the post A. The. lower ring, a, not only revolves around but is made to slide up and down the postA between the shoulder on the post A, upon which it ordinarily rests, and the upper ring, 0. When raised the ring 0 is held in position by the device E, which consists of a long supporting-rod having a hook formed upon its free end, and which, by catching in or under the ring 0, holds it in a raised position.

F F are sectional clamps or holders, which are hinged to each other and arranged to swing laterally by sections or on the end pivot which connects the interior section with the bars B. The outer section of the clamp F has a recess or slot, g, cut in its outer end, and in this slot is pivoted a fastening device, G, of the form shown in Fig. 3, and which, by catching under the outer end of the arm B, which is slotted in a similar manner to the clamp F, holds the clamp securely in place.

In operation the bar B is brought to ahorizontal position by lowering the brace-ring c to the shoulder on the post A. By lifting the device G out of the slot in the end of B the several sections of the clamp F can then be swung laterally from the bar B, so as to permit the articles to be hung upon the bar, the sectional arrangement of the clamp F permitting their confinement to the bar as rapidly as the space covered by the section is filled without waiting to cover the entire bar, as would be necessary if the clamp consisted of a single piece. The same advantage exists in the removal of the articles.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- In a clothes-reel, the combination of the arms B, having the jointed clamping-arms F attached thereto, and fastening devices for securing the outer ends of the arms together after the clothes have been placed between them, whereby portions of the clothes may be removed at a time from the arms B without the necessity of unclamping them all, substantially as shown and described.
