HANDLE FORMING TAPE' I Filed Aug. 1l,l 1943 a i x18 921( /lwfz l I 4 a INVENTOR.
Z Jose/ /-fu Patented Oct. 31, 1944l UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE HANDLE` FORMZING TAPE Joseph A. Young, Salt Lake City, Utah Application August 11, 1943, Serial No. 498,217
2 Claims. (Cl. 229-52) My invention relates to gummed tape of the type usually used for securing packages and has for its object to provide a new and novel method of employing the tape both to seal the package and provide a handle by which the package may be carried.
A further object is to provide a tape having perforated portions therein adapted to be torn when used to provide a handle for carrying the package and simultaneously seal the package.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specication formingl a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a roll of tape with one portion extended showing the perforated lines for making the handle.
Figure 2 is an edge view of a box or carton showing my tape in place thereon as used for a handle.
Figure 3 is an inverted plan view of a section of the tape showing the method of gumming the back side of the tape.
Figure 4 is a section of line 4 4 of Figure 1 with the additional feature of a reinforcing strip through the center and handle portion of the tape.
Figure 5 is a side view of the tape and handle as it would appear when used on a flat surface.
Figure 6 is a modied manner of manufacturing thetape.
In the drawing I have shown the roll of tape as A, and this roll may be used in the usual mechanical tape distributing machine now employed for that purpose. The tape is shown as B and is gummed along the two side portions 5 and 6, leaving the central portion l free from gum.
Spaced apart perforated lines 'I and 8 are formed in the tape with diagonal cuts 9 and IIJ at one end of the lines ,'I and 8. When torn or removed from the wetting machine the tape will appear having an end I2, side strips I3 and I4, a handle I5, and another end I6. A reinforcing strip Il as shown in Figure 4 may be used under the handle I5 and this reinforcing may extend the full length of the tape if desired. The tape is applied to the package by adhering the end I2 and the side strips I3 and I4 to the package. Raising the end I6 will sever the perforated lines releasing the handle I5 and the operator may then adhere the end I6 over the ends of the side strips I3 and I4 in order to elevate the handle I5 and seal the package by use of the side strips It will be obvious that if desired the gumniing of the back of the tape may be so placed that the two side strips I3 and I4 may be left without any gum and the center strip used as the sealing means and the strips I3 and I4 used as double handles reversing the manner of applying the tape.
In Figure 6 I have shown a modied type of the invention in which the tape isshown as C, which is gummed over its entire back surface and which tape carries a medial longitudinal wire or plastic handle member 20. The tape is perforated on an angle at I8 and I9 extending inwardly to a central perforation 2I which extends longitudinally of the tape in alignment with the handle member 20. When employing this type of handle means the entire surface of the tape is dampened and the portions 22, 23 and 24 are adhered to the package with the end 25 loose and used to manipulate .the tape. The wire strip or member 20 is elevated by raising the end 25 automatically perforating the lines I8, I9 and 2 I, forming a loop of the handle memberZi) by moving the end 25 toward the end 24 and end 25 is then adhered down onto the ends of the members 23 and 24.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim:
1. A tape of the class described comprising a roll of tape having two side portions throughout its entire length carrying adhesive and a multiplicity of spaced apart rows of parallel perforations spaced from the longitudinal edges of said roll one end only of each row of perforations Ibeing extended out at an angle to the edge of said roll said tape to be torn off to form an individual section each section having an end portion adapted to be secured to a package with the perforate sides to be secured to the package and the intermediate portion raised as a handle, the extreme end being secured down onto the package over the spaced apart sides after the handle has been elevated.
2. A handle forming tape comprising a roll of tape having parallel rows of perforations formed therein of equal length and spaced equally from the outer longitudinal edges thereof with one end only of each row of perforations angled out to the longitudinal edge adjacent thereto to provide for severing of the two sides from the central portion with the central portion to be elevated by drawing the two ends thereof toward each other to form a handle with the two sides adhered overlapping the body of the tape when afxed to a package.
