UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILETUS DORLON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED BUTTER-COOLER AND WATER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,857, dated December 28,1880.
Application filed August 24,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, PHILETUS DORLON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Combined Butter-Coolers and Water-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to be used upon the table for the; double purpose of keeping butter in a cool condition during meal-times, and at the same time afford a means of keeping water at the low temperature usually deemed necessary or desirable in Water for drinking.
The invention consists in the combination, with the butter-plate, of a refrigerating-flask of peculiar construction, whereby the aforesaid object is effectually secured.
The figure on the drawing is a side view and partial section representing my said invention.
Ais an ordinary butter dish or plate, of the usual or any suitable construction, it being only necessary that it should be of such form that the flask B may be set thereon with the circumference of the flask in greater or less proximity to the circumference of the dish. The flask B is of glass, and externally may have more or less the form of a decanter with an unusually broad neck or throat, this form being substantially represented in the drawing. The bottom, however, of this flask B differs essentially in its form and relation to the other parts of the flask from that of an ordinary decanter or similar bottle-like article. The said bottom of the said flask B is concavo-convex, the concavity being on the under side to afford a chamber, a, underneath the bottle, as represented in the drawing.
The flask B being placed upon the dish A,
as just explained, and as represented in the drawing, thecapacity of the chamber a being united with the capacity of the dish A, affords an inclosed space or receptacle, in which the butter is placed. The flask B is filled with ice, preferably in a more or less comminuted condition and with a greater or less quantity of water. The flask thus constitutes an icebox or refrigerator placed above and around the butter, and thereby keeps the latter at the requisite low temperature. At the same time the liquid portion of the contents of the flask B is available for use for drinking purposes, when required more ice, or ice and water, being added to the contents of the flask to supply that removed for drinking, 850., as just explained.
By the means described provision is made for keeping the water in a cold state without any addition to the usual number of appliances on the table.
What I claim as my invention is- Y The combination, with the butter-dish A, of a glass flask, B, constructed with the concavoconvex bottom to form a chamber, a, the flask resting upon the dish, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
PHILETUS DORLON.
