. This invention relates to an igniting device and it is an object of the invention toprovide a device of this kind of a pyrophoric type which in its use substantially eliminates flash annoyance and fire risk. f
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which operates to provide for a. continuous shower of sparks to assure positive lighting.
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in the lighting -of gas, fireplaces, stoves, camp fires and the like and.A whereinthe device is of a character to assure the fingers of the user being at a positively safedistance away from the suddenly ignited flame to avoid accidental scorching and burning which often occurs when using matches or short mechanical lighters.
'I'he invention consists in the details of con' struction and in the combination and arrange-v mentdof the several parts of `my improved ignit' ing device whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better une'` derstood, I will now proceed to describe the sameV with `reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying "drawing, I denotes an elongated shaft which is freely dis posed through the aligned tubular members v2 o-r lower tubular section 3. Thegear I in the present embodiment of the invention has suitably secured thereto an .operating handle 9 whereby the Vgear may be conveniently rotated manually to effect the desired rotation of the shaft I.y
The lower or inner section 3 is suitably anchored to a hand grasp I0.
The shaft I is offa length to extendwithin the louter extremity of the top or outer tubular member 2 and the shaft I is effectively held against undue endwise movement through the members 2` and 3 by contact ofthe pinion 6 with the opposed ends ofthe membersv 2 and 3. The outer or extended extremity of `the shaft I Vcarries a slotted head II adapted to engage in a conventional manner a valve member to turn or twist the same to control the iiow yof the gas or other fluid to the igniter. s
Theextended portion of the shaft linwardly of but closely adjacent to the head II has fixed for rotation therewith a beveled pinion I2 meshing with a gear Illv fixed to the shaft I5. This shaft I5 extendsoutwardly and laterally from the upper or outer end portion of the tubular member`2. This shaft I5 has one end `portion rotatr ably engaged within a bearing I6 carried exterv vnally by the tubular member 2 and is also rotatably disposed through an'd supported by the outer s end portions of the radially opposed elongatedV arms I1 carried by an end porti-on ofr a int barrel I8. This barrel I3v is parallel to the outer end portion of the tubular member 2 and spaced a slight distance therefrom but securely anchored thereto by the intermediate connecting webs I9 herein disclosedl as two in number.
Fixed 'to the shaft I5 for rotation therewith and positioned between the arms I'I of the flint barrel I8 is an abrasive wheel 20 of desired radius.

'I'his unit 2l freely extends within the upper or outer end of the flint barrel I8 and is constantly urged toward theabrasive wheel 20 by the spring-pressed follower 22 working within the barrel I8, whereby the int unit 2I is con-` stantly urged `outwardly for effective contact with .the periphery of the abrasive wheel 20 and which periphery issuitablyroughened.
The follower 22 is carried by the inserted end of an elongated stem 23 freely entering the lower end of the barrel I8 through a removable plug 24 closing said lower end portion of the barrel. Interposed between the applied plug 24 and the follower 22 is an expansible spring 25 of desired tension, said spring being herein disclosed as of a coil type encircling the stem 23.
Snugly engaged from above down over the Webs I9 are the hook members 26 carried by the opposite end portions of an elongated split clip 21 which is adapted to frictionally hold a container 28 holding a supply of inflammable fluid and extending within this container 28 through the top of the container is a wick 29.
As is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the container 28 is positioned to one side of the plane occupied by the tubular member 2 and the barrel I8 but in relatively close proximity thereto so that the extended end portion of the wick 29 will be closely adjacent to the abrasive wheel 20 so that upon rotation of this wheel 20 by turning of the gear 1, the resultant sparks from the int unit 2l will effect the de- .sired lighting of the wick 29.
It is believed to be apparent that the efficiency of the device as herein disclosed is materially :increased in view of the fact that the abrasive wheel 20 can be rotated .fora prolonged period of 'timeor substantially continuous to assure dur-V 'ing ysuch time or period the stream of sparks cre-, :ated will ignite the wick 29. It is also to be .stated that'the various gears 'are of such ratio to assure a rapid rotation of the abrasive wheel 20 to force the sparks downwardly for effective contact with the wick. Y
While in the present embodiment of the ineY vention the container 28 is detachably engaged with a clip 2l, it is believed .to be obvious that ifv desired the hook members 26 maybe carried directly by the container. As this is an obvious expedient, it is not believed necessary that such Yarrangement be illustrated in the drawing as to all-intents and purposes, insofar as the present invention is concerned, .the clip 21V and container 28 are aunit. a

3. An igniter as set forth in claim 2 in which said flint barrel is connected in spaced relation 4with the bearing by vertically spaced webs, and
d ,means carried by the lamp unit for detachable connection with said webs whereby the unit is removably mounted upon the igniter.

In combination in an igniter, a tubular bearing, a handle attached to the bearing at one end, a shaft extending longitudinally through the bearing and rotatably supported therein with an end extendingbeyond the other end of the bearing, a head carried upon the said end of the shaft Yand formed for detachable connection with a valve key, a gear secured to the shaft between the headY and the adjacent end of the bearing, means for effecting the rotation of the shaft, anda lighter unit supported upon the bearing inwardly from the end adjacent which the gear is located, said lighter including a rotary sparking element, a lamp including a wick, and a gear connected between the rst gear and the rotary sparking element for actuating the latter.

An igniter comprising an elongated tubular bearing, a handle secured at one end of the bearing, a shaft extending through the bearing and rotatably supported therein and projecting at one end beyond the other end of the bearing, a gear secured to the said one end of the shaft, means for rotating the shaft-and gear, a int barrel secured inparallel relation with and to the bearing inwardly from the end thereof adjacent which the gear is located, said `-flint barrel having longitudinally extending spaced arms and a flint in the barrel and exposed at one end between the arms, a shaft mounted between said arms to extend perpendicular to the first shaft and having an end extended between an arm for contact with said flint, a gear secured to the:
