1 Claim.
This invention relates to a fire prevention apparatus, more particularly it relates to devices primarily designed and intended for extinguishing incendiary bombs.
As is well understood, various materials of a granular nature such as sand or various chemicals mixed with sand or similar material are generally regarded as the most effective apparatus for extinguishing incendiary bombs of the thermite or thermite and magnesium type.
The present invention has for an object the provision of a container for holding a convenient amount of sand or similar chemical extinguishing material, which container is, at the same time, designed as being convertible to provide a shovel or scoop so that it may not only serve to distribute the sand on the fire to be extinguished but may also serve to provide means for removing the partially extinguished bomb.
The primary object of thepresentinvention is to provide a simple, easily fabricated container which is easily accessible and which may be conveniently used with a minimum of skill and instructioh.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a simple type of apparatus for distributing sand or other chemical composition on an incendiary bomb while the same is burning without the necessity of the person handling the apparatus coming in any closer contact with the fire than is absolutely necessary.
Many other and further objects, advantages, and features of the present invention will become clearly apparent from the following specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of apparatus embodying the improvements of the present invention showing the container in closed position with the handle detached therefrom.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the specific apparatus shown in Figure 1 of the drawing showing the same in horizontal position and illustrating the general construction and arrangement of parts.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the specific form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 showing a rear or bottom view of the apparatus with the handle thereof attached thereto in operative position.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the specific form of the invention shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3, showing the front or top view thereof with the handle attached in operative position.
With more particular reference to the specific form of the invention disclosed in the drawing, it will be readily understood that this form of construction is merely illustrative of the basic in-' ventive concept constituting the invention herein described and claimed.
The specific form of the invention disclosed comprises a generally rectilinear container having front and rear walls 5 and 6 and side walls 7 and 8, secured together as for example by spot welding through matin flanges as shown. In this connection, it should be pointed out that the construction shown in the drawing and herein specifically described is shown as being fabricated of sheet metal but it will be readily apparent that such a construction having many of the advantages of;the construction herein shown and described may be fabricated from wood, fibre or any other suitable material, secured together in any manner conventional in the art.
As shown, the container may include a bottom wall of sheet metal '9 having flanged edges designed to mate with the front wens 5 and 6 and side walls land 8 and secured thereto by spot welding as shown to provide a'tight sealing bottom wall for the construction shown.
A strap member ID with inturned ends may be provided across the bottom which may serve not only as a reinforcement for the construction as a whole but may provide a hand hold for use of the container manually as hereinafter described in detail.
Likewise, the side walls of the container at the front or top side of the structure may be interconnected by means of a securely anchored strap member II which similarly may serve as a reinforcement and a handle for manual use of the device as hereinafter described in detail.
As seen more clearly in Figure 1 of the drawing, the upper end of the apparatus may conveniently be closed by means of a lid [2 connected to the front wall of the container by means of hinges l 3. This is regarded as an important feature of the present invention in that it not only provides a neat and attractive looking receptacle but also prevents the use of the device for purposes other than those for which it is intended.
The front wall of the container has anchored thereto a lug 14 having a circular aperture I5 therein adapted to receive a handle 16 of wood or other suitable cylindrical stock, and it will be noted that the portion of the lug l4 having the aperture therein is normally disposed in a position slightly inclined to the perpendicular with respect to the front wall of the container verse slot I9 therethrough, as clearly seen in Figure 1, adapted to receive the cross pin iii in order to anchor the handle firmly in position and at the same time retain the lid and container in predetermined position with respect to the handle.
From the foregoing, it will be clear that the apparatus is simple and convenient in operation.
The container when in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawing may be filled with sand; and while its size and the material with which it is filled forms no part of the present invention, the specific embodiment shown is designed and intended to hold approximately thirty-five pounds of sand or other chemically treated extinguishing material.
In operation, it will be seen that the specific form of the present invention may be used in several different ways. In the first place, when it is desired to use the device to extinguish an incendiary bomb, the operator may open the lid l2 and grasp the container first by the strap ll in one hand and then by the strap H1 in the other hand and sprinkle sand around the burning bomb and then cover the same. In the event that the heat and burning of the bomb is such'that it is impracticable to approach it closely enough to use the apparatus in the manner above described, then the lid may be turned back and the handle inserted in the manner shown in the drawing and described above. In this event, the apparatus may be used more or less as a shoveland the sand or other extinguishing material may be distributed from a more remote point.

From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that the specific form of the invention described in detail above and illustrated in the drawing is merely illustrative of one form that the device of the present invention may take. Many other and further modifications thereof will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art and will fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the subioined claim.
What is claimed is:
Fire extinguishing apparatus comprising a container having a bottom wall, front and rear walls extending upwardly from said bottom wall, side walls extending upwardly from said bottom wall, said walls being secured together to form a generally rectilinear receptacle adapted to contain a granular extinguishing material, a cover normally serving to close the upper end of said receptacle, said cover being hinged at one of its marginal edges to the upper edge of the front wall of said container, a pole-like handle for manipulating said container, means secured to the front wall of said container adapted to receive said handle and means on the interior of said cover adapted to be in alignment with said first mentioned means when said cover is opened to anchor the end of said handle detachably with respect to said container.
