(01. 197-17) The invention relates to improvements in typewriting machines, the general object of the invention being to provide an improved, more efficient, and more easily operated typewriting machine of the kind in which type impressions and concomitant letter space feeding of the paper which receives the type impressions are effected under control of manually operable type keys by power independent of that exerted by the typist in depressing the type keys.
The invention relates particularly to improvements in the means whereby type impressionsand desired letter space feeding of the paper are effected.
The invention, more particularly, provides improved key-controlled power-actuated means for effecting selective actuation of the type carriers of the machine and concomitant letter space feeding of the paper which receives the type ciently accomplishing the several aforesaid ends with great ease and a minimum of effort by a typist.
The invention also provides an improved construction and arrangement of parts (including the keys, the space bar, and adjacent portions of the main frame of the machine) affording an improved keyboard portion or section of the machine whereby the several keys and the space bar are operable by the typist with maximum ease, efliciency and comfort, and whereby the keyboard and adjacent parts of the main frame are so constructed and arranged as also to enhance the appearance and compactness of the machine.
Other purposes and advantages of'the invention will appear from the following description in detail of the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The invention, to the foregoing ends, comprises the arrangement of parts, features of constructions and combinations of elements and devices particularly pointed out in each of the several appended claims.
The drawings illustrate the invention in accordance with a preferred construction, hereinafter particularly described, wherein theimprovements are incorporated in a known L C Smith typewriting machine otherwise constructed substantially as is disclosed, for example, in United States patents to Gabrielson numbered 983,490, 1,018,968, 1,032,131, and 2,029,200, it being understood that said improvements may be embodied in other machines.

The illustrative embodiment of the invention 1 shown'in the drawings will now be described.
The machine illustrated has a suitable stationary main framework, portions of which are shown, said framework being generally designated by the reference numeral H3. The machine is provided with the usual roller platen H journaled in the usual platen carriage I2 which, in turn, is mounted on the framework as usual to travel transversely of the machinefor letter feeding or spacing under controlof the usual escapement device. This escapement device comprises the usual feed rack l fixed to the carriage,

The lower arm of each sub-lever 22 has pivotally connected thereto at the lower end thereof at 25 the forward end of a different one of a series of rearwardly extending couplers or interponents 26, the couplers being normally arranged in a straight horizontal row across the machine with the pivots 25 in axial register for selective swinga ing of the couplers up and down about a straight horizontal axial line extending transversely of the-machine. .Above and to the rear of their piv- 0ts,'the couplers have connected thereto the forward ends of a row of type bar and coupler return springs 2'! anchored at their rear ends to a part of the stationary framework I 0. These springs normally yieldingly hold the type barsagainst type bar rest l8 and hold thecouplers against a horizontal and straight coupler rest 28 I which extends transversely of the machine. The
couplers normally extend to the rear of rest 28 through vertical guide slots in a coupler guide comb 29 which extends horizontally across the machine, said coupler rest and guide comb being mounted on a part of the stationary framework In and being preferably adjustable fore and aft of the machine. The rear edge of the coupler rest is undercut-as shown at 28, and each coupler is formed with a forwardly facing and forwardly and downwardly inclined shoulder 30 (Figure 8) normally spaced slightly rearward of the undercut rear edge of the coupler rest to permit upward swinging of the coupler about its pivot 25 but engageable with said undercut'edge by a very slight rebound of the type bar from its rest I8 to lock the connected type bar against any appreciable rebound from the type bar rest. Each coupler 26; is formed with a rearwardly facing shoulder 3| which is slightly undercut at its upper extends horizontally across the machine and is journaled at its ends at 35 on the main framework (0. The cross bar of the actuator normally overlies and is spaced above all of the coupler fingers 32, and the straight forward edge of this'actuator cross bar is normally located above and slightly to the rear of the upper ends of coupler shoulders 3|.

Below thesegment' 94' and the lower ends of sub-levers 22, a straight horizontal bar I05 fixed 5 to framework I0 extends transversely of the machine, is provided with a series of vertical slots I06 across its front edge, and carries a straight horizontal fulcrum wire I01 which'crosses all of said slots I06. Engagedin slots I06 and fulcrumed on wire I01 are identical sub-levers I08 (one for each key lever), said sub-levers lying in parallel vertical planes disposed fore and aft of the machine. The main framework of the machine includes a base casting having side walls It, a rear wall l and a front wall It. secured, by screws H8, a flat keyboard guard plate '59 which inclines downwardly and forwardly to the top inner edge of front wall l0 of the casting. All of the keys of the keyboard (including the type keys I00 and the usual special keys) are disposed in an inclined plane parallel to'that of plate I19, and the plate is provided with circular apertures 180 (one for each such key). Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a mainframe, a platen carriage mounted on the main frame to. traveltransversely thereof, a platen on the carriage, a system of type bars located below and in front of the platenand supported in the main frame for upward and rearward swinging of any selected tyIpe' bar to the platen for printing coaction with the platen, a carriage feeding escapement includinga foreand-aft rockable dog rocker located'behind the system of type bars, a fo-re-and-aft rockable type bar actuating bail located between and below the dog rocker and, type floarsystem and having a horizontal cross-bar extending transversely of the machine and pendent side arms pivoted on thev main frame, an operating connection between said actuator and dog rocker, a row of ,fore-and-aft extending type bar driving interponents positively connected with the type bars and normally aligned horizontally and transversely of the machine out of the field of movement of the:- cross-bar of the type bar actuator and each having a finger normally extending under said cross-baranda rearwardly facing shoulder moyalbleupward into the fieid of movement ofisaidcross-bar, return spring means for each type bar and itsv connected interponent,' a system of sub-levers. fulcr-umed for rocking about ahorizontal axis extending transversely of the machine forward of the system of interponents and each extending downward and then rearward below the system of interponents through said type bar actuating lbail, a row of fore-and-ait extending links connected at their rear ends to the downwardly extending portions of'the' sub-levers, a system of type key carrying'levers having upturned key-carrying front end portions'and also-having upturned rear end portions fulcrumed'at their upper ends on the main frame for'swinging about a common horizontal axis extending transversely'of the machine below the system of type bars, return spring means for each connected key-carrying lever and sub-lever and link, means carried by each sub-lever for shifting a difierentone of the interponents upwardly to position its rearwardly facing shoulder'directly in advanceof the crossbar of the actuating bailto receive a blow from said cross-bar, and power means controlled by lifting movement of any one of said intenponents to rock said actuating bail first'forward and then rearward and thereafter hold the bail innormal retracted position.
9. A typewriting machine asclaimedin' claim 8, wherein the key levers are of different length to support the keys infour rows extending across the machine, the sub-levers are all identical, and the links connecting the key-carrying'levers and s'ub-levers'are all of the same length andare connected'to the downwardly extending portions of the sulb-levers at different elevations for the different rows of: keys for uniform dip. of'all' keys and uniform rocking of the sub-leversrby'the keys.
10. A'typewriting machine as claimed in claim 8, wherein the key levers are of different length to support the keys in four rows extending across the machine, the sub-levers are all identical, and the links connecting the key-carrying levers and sub-levers are allof the same length and are connected to the downwardly extending portions of the sub-levers at different elevations-for the different'rows of keys for uniform dip of all keys and uniform rocking of the sub-levers by the keys, the tops of all of the keys are normally disposed in a single downwardly and forwardly inclined plane, and a guard plate is held to the main frame in a plane parallel to that of the key tops and has perforations in which the keys are movable down and up, and a spring-returned space bar connected to said dog rocker is mounte ed within the forward limit of the main frame forward of the keys, is supported in advance of the guard plate for depression to actuate the dog rocker, and has a top thumb-impact receiving surface inclined in a plane parallel to and intermediate those of the key tops and guard plate.
11. A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 8,-wherein the key levers are of different length to support the keys in four rows extending across the machine, the sub-levers are all identical, and the'links connecting the key-carrying levers and sub-levers are all of the same length and ,are connected to the downwardly extending portions of the sub-levers at different elevations for the different rows of keys for uniform dip of all keys and uniform rocking of the sub-levers by the keys, the tops of all of the keys are normally disposed in a single downwardly and forwardly inclined plane, and a guard plate is held to the main frame in a plane parallel to that of the key tops and has perforations in which the keys are movable down and up. r V

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, a system of normally forwardly I extending type bars mounted in the frame for upward and rearward swinging of the type bars to-print, a type bar actuator mounted on the frame for fore-and-aft movement and having a straight type bar impelling edge extendin horizontally transversely of the machine, a row of identical fore-and-aft extending type bar driving interponents positively connected to the type bars and normally aligned horizontally transversely of the machine, each interponent having a rearwardly facing shoulder presentable in front of said actuator edge by upwardgmovement of the interponent, return spring means for each type bar and its-driving interponent, a row of identical sub-levers normally aligned horizontally transversely of the machine and each having an upstanding forward portion and a portion extending rearward below therow of interponents, means supporting the upstanding portions of the sub-levers for rocking about a common straight. horizontal axis extending transversely of the machine, means on the main frame for supporting the interponents in their normal returned position, interponent lifting means carried by the rearwardly extending porsub-levers for uniform dip of all the keys and uniform rocking .of the sub-levers by key pression.

In a typewriting" machine, the combination of a normally idle and reciprocably mounted type carrier actuator, individual-type key operated meansfor selecting a typecarrier for actuation, power-operated means for effecting a single re ciprocation' ofi said .actuatorzupon ,actuation of any one of saidtype key operatedmeans, a second actuator I for actuating the letter spacing means of the machine having a lost-motion connection' with said type carrier actuator for. actuation of the.secondvactuator'bythe type carrier actuator, means normally and separably en aged Withsaid second actuator for' operation by the latter to actuaterthe letter spacing meansl of the machine, a disabling device operable on the lastmentionedimeans todisconnect'it from the second actuator, a plurality of 'tappets detachably heldto the disablinglgdevice for engagement by selected ones of the "key operated means to cause saididisabling' device to temporarily disconnect the separably engaged means from the second actuator, and a space bar'having a lost-motion operating connection with the second actuator to manually operate thesecond actuator independe ently of actuation ofthe type carrier actuator.
14. Ina typewriting machine, the combination of aplaten carriage, a :platen on the carriage, a letter feed escapement for said carriage including' a spring-returned escapement dogrocker, spring-returned individual type bar actuating means, type bars each coactivewith' the platen and positively connected with a different one of said individual type bar actuating means, a tappet mechanism, spring means for actuating said tappet mechanism to concomitantly impel the dog rocker and any selected one of said individual type bar actuating meansin opposition to the return spring force exerted on said dog rocker.' and the selected type .bar actuatingmeans to trip the carriage escapement and effect a type impression, a single cycle power mechanism for automatically restoring the tappet mechanism following each actuation of said tappet mechanism by its actuating spring means and releasablyuholding said tappet mechanism in restored condition, type keys for the respective type bars, and a plurality of individual spring-returned means each positively connected with a different type key for manual operation thereof upon depression of its connected key to concomitantly release the tappet mechanism and condition the individual actuating means for the associated one of the type bars to receive an impelling blow fromthe tappet mechanism upon the ensuing spring actuation of the released tappet mechanism 7 15. A typewriting machine according to claim 14,;wherein:the'tappet mechanism comprises an escapement tripping tappet and an actuating tappet'for. the several individual type bar actuating means, whereina tripping element is pivotally held to the escapement dog rocker for swinging of said element into and out of the field of movement of the escapement tripping tappet and is normally yieldingly held positioned for actuation by said tappet, and whereinmeans'are provided operableby one of said individual type key oper ated means, upon depression of the associated type key, to swing said tripping element out of the field of action of the escapement tripping tappet; 1 g i 16. In a typewriting machine, a platen carriage, a platen on the carriage, a, carriage escapementincluding'a spring returned. escapement dog rocker,--an oppositelyshiftable and normally idle type carrier actuatontype carriers normally dis,- connected from said actuator, spring means for moving said actuator from idle position to impart a printing stroke to any selected one of the type carriers, superior power means for automatically restoring the actuator to idle position, means for automatically releasably locking the actuator in idle position upon restoration of the actuator, type keys for the respective type carriers, means operable by depression of either one of the type keys to concomitantly release the actuator from said locking means and establish a driving connection between the actuator and the type carrier associated with the depressed key, an element positively connected with said actuator for opposite shifting of the element by the actuator, an oppositely shiftable dog rocker tripping tappet, a return spring for said tappet normally yieldingly holding said tappet thrust against said element for movement of the tappet by said element on the spring impelled strokes of the type carrier actuator, a hook pivoted to the dog rocker, a spring connected with said hook to normally hold said hook swung into the field of action of the dog rocker tripping tappet for actuation to rock the dog rocker in opposition to its return spring on the spring impelled strokes of the type carrier actuator, a spring-returned escapement-disabling tappet device, and tappet means operable by one of the type keys upon key depression to actuate escapement disablin tappet device to cause the latter to swing said hook out of the field of action of the dog rocker tripping tappet.
17. In a typewriting machine, a platen carriage, a platen on the carriage, an escapement for the carriage including a spring-returned element movable in opposition to the return spring force imposed thereon for tripping the escapement, a tappet for so moving said element, type carriers, selecting keys for the type carriers, and power actuated means controlled by the respective keys for concomitantly actuating said tappet and a selected type carrier.
18. A typwriting machine,-as claimed in claim 1'7, having a spring-returned manually depressible space bar, and an element positively oppositely shiftable by said bar, and wherein said tappet is movable independently of the power mechanism and said element and is normally yieldingly held in position for thrust actuation of said tappet by said element during the down strokes of the space bar and by said power mechanism during printing strokes of the type carriers.
19. In a key-controlled power-actuated typewriting machine, .a main framework including a base casting having side and rear and front walls of a low maximum height not substantially exceeding the maximum height of the keyboard of the machine, four parallel rows of downwardly and forwardly inclined spring-returned manually depressible type keys all lying in a single downwardly and forwardly inclined plane and located within the front portion of said base casting with the front one of said rows of keys close to the front wall of said casting, the front wall of said casting being recessed along both its top and front faces intermediate its ends, a flat forwardly and downwardly inclined guard plate fixed to said base casting and extending rearward beyond the keyboard from the upper edge of the front wall of said casting and having four rows of apertures from which the type keys protrude upward, a manually depressible and spring returned space bar movable down and up in and ill substantially covering the recesses in the front wall of said" casting and having a flat downwardly and forwardly inclined thumb impact receiving top surface normally disposed in a plane parallel to and intermediate those of the type key tops and said guard plate, means for limiting depress ing and return strokes of the type keys, means for limiting depressing and return strokes of the space bar to an extent substantially equal to those of the type keys, the depression limit of the typekeys being such that their impact receiving top faces are depressible substantially to the plane of said guard plate, a platen carriage supported on the framework to travel transversely of the machine above the rear portion of the base casting, a platen on the carriage. a system of type bars supported above the base casting intermediate the platen and keyboard, an escapement for the carriage, normally inactive power actuated mechanism for actuating the escapement and type bars located within the rear portion of the 'base casting, an operating connection between the escapement and power mechanism, individual normally ineffective operating connections between the type bars and power mechanism, means operable by the type keys and located within the base casting for activating the power mechanism for a single cycle of operation and selectively rendering the individual connections between the type bars and power mechanism efiective, means located within the base casting and operable by the space bar to manually trip the escapement through a part of the operating connection between the escapement and said power mechanism, and activating power means for said power actuated mechanism located within the framework.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a platen on the carriage, spring-returned type carriers bearing types coactive With the platen, a letter feed escapement for the carriage including a spring-returned escapement dog carrier, a spring-returned tappet for actuating the dog rocker, a power-actuated tappet mechanism for concomitantly actuating any selected one of the type carriers and said dog rocker actuating tappet in opposition to the return spring forces exerted on said tappet and selected type carrier, spring means for impelling said power-actuated tappet mechanism to 50 actuate the dog rocker actuating tappet and selected type carrier, power means for retracting said power-actuated tappet mechanism in opposition to said spring means and holding said mechanism retracted, driving interponents positively connected with the respective type carriers and normally out of the field of action of said poweractuated tappet mechanism, spring-returned tappet devices individually operable on the respective driving interponents to position any selected interponent for driving of the latter by the power-actuated tappet mechanism upon spring impulsion of said mechanism, spring-returned means engageable and shiftable by the selected coupler upon positioning movement of the latter by its associated actuating tappet device to release the power-actuated tappet mechanism for impulsion of the latter by said spring means, and a spring-returned tappet means operable on said dog rocker actuating tappet independently of said power-actuated tappet mechanism for effecting letter spacing of the carriage without printing.
21. A typewriting machine, as claimed in claim 20, having a vspring-returned escapement-disabling tappet device operable by either one of a selected plurality of said interponent positioning tappet devices, and a'dog rocker actuating interponent connected with the dog rocker and normally yieldingly held positioned for actuation by the dog rocker actuating tappet and movable out of the field of action of the latter I by said escapement-disabling tappet.
22. A typewriting machine, as claimed in claim 20, wherein the interponent positioning tappet devices are each'individually adjustable w ponent toward and from its actuating tappet.
