SULKY-PLOW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,205, dated December 7, 1880,

Application filed April 28, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LE RoY OAHILL, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky- Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow-carriage, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved plow-carriage. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a rear view, of the same. Fig. 4 is a section through the hub of one of the wheels.

A represents the axle-tree to which theframe is secured, said frame consisting of two side bars, B B, fastened at each end of the axletree, and extending forward, their forward ends having top and bottom cross-bars, O O, secured to them. A cross-bar, D, is also fastened on the rear ends of the side bars, B B, directly over the axle-tree. The tongue E is inserted between the bars 0 O and between the axle-tree A and bar D, and held by pins or bolts on a. The tongue may be shifted to either side, as required.

F is a slotted platform secured on this frame, and having the seat Gr adjustable back and forward thereon.

Under each end of the axle-tree A is secured a forked casting or double hanger, H, in the two arms of which the axle I has its bearings. To the outer end of this short axle is attached a crank, J, carrying at one end the spindle b, for receiving the wheel K. On the other end of the arm or crank J is formed a toothed di'sk, d. A similar disk, 01, is formed on or attached to the end of a lever, L, and the two disks held together by a bolt, 0. Each short axle, I, is held in its casting or hanger by means of a coll ar,-h, fastened on the axle by a set-screw, t. Each side lever, L, may be adjusted in any suitable position by means of the toothed or ratchet disks or washers d d, and when properly adjusted they are used for regulating the wheels, the levers being held at any point by means of side rack-bars, M, secured to the frame, as shown.

N is the bail to which the plow or plows are to be connected. This bail has its arms piv- 6o oted in the hangers H, and one arm extends forward a suitable distance beyond the hanger, and the forward end of this arm is, by connecting-links O 0, connected to the short arm of an elbow-lever, P, which is pivoted to the side bar, B, of the frame, which is extended forward for that purpose. When the lever P is thrown down to raise the bail and plows it is held by means of a hook, f, and when the plows are lowered the extended arm of the,7o bail is held up to the frame by means of a hook, m, which passes up through the front bars, 0 O, and has a crank at its upper end.

It also passes through a shouldered casting, a,

on top of the frame. The hook or catch is for holding the plow in hard ground, and the shouldered casting a prevents the catch from turning when it is drawing down.

In the tongue or pole E is a slot, 00, through which is passed an eyebolt, 10. This bolt passes through a plate, B, placed against the side of the pole, and having top and bottom flanges to fit thereon. Through the eye of the bolt 19 is passed an l -shaped rod, S, and a thumb-nut, t, screwed on the end of the bolt confines the parts to the pole. This rod can be adjusted up and down and back and forward, as required, and is used to hold the end of the plow-beam down when the back part of the plow is raised up, and also to-hold the 0 plow from coming out when the ground is hard.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the axle I, crank or arm J, provided with the ratchet-disk d, the lever L, provided with similar disk d, and the rack-bar M, as and for the purpose set forth.
