Q XJJ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JULIUS C. RICHARDSON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
CHILDS CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,171, dated December '7, 1880,
Application filed October 2, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs C. RICHARD- SON, of the city of Columbus, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Carriages; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a standard with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 shows the standard inclined.
My invention relates to the standards used in the construction of childrens carriages; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents a metal plate, secured. to each side of the top of the carriage, to guide and secure the standard in position. This plate is provided with a curved slot, at, the slot forming the segment of a circle, which has for its center the pivot b, which secures the standard B to the horizontal cross-bar C.
The standard D, which passes on the outside of the plate A, is provided with the longitudinal slot 0!, through which passes the lockingscrew E, the said screw passing also through the curved slot 01 into the standard B. It is evident from this construction that the two standards may be placed vertical or be leaned at any incline backward or forward, as may be desired, the movement being limited by the extent of the slot at.
(No model.)
The lower ends of the standards are pivoted to the two arms of the bifurcated plate F, which rests upon the body of the carriage; and to change the position of the top from a horizontal to any desired incline it is only necessary to loosen the lock-screw E and slide the standard D up or down, as shown in the drawlugs.
It is evident from this description that I am enabled to tip the top of my carriage backward or forward independently and without tipping the standards, which is an important feature in my construction, as by it the child can be readily protected from wind and rain by tipping the standards backward and the top forward, so as to cover the child more effectually.
I am aware that it is not new to use two locking-standards on the side of a childs carriage to support the canopy, and therefore I do not claim the same, broadly; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plate A,'provided with the curved slot at, and the standard B, pivoted to the horizontal cross-bar C, in combination with the slot-ted standard D, lock-screw E, and bifurcated plate F, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JULIUS C. RICHARDSON.
