England Application June 11, 1943, Serial No. 490,508 In Great Britain June 17, 1942 2 Claims. (01. 123-148) This invention relates to auxiliary spark ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines, the apparatus being of the kind used in conjunction with a magneto for starting an engine and comprising a transformer having a trembler interrupter in its primary circuit and having its secondary winding adapted to be connected to the primary winding of the magneto.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved auxiliary apparatus of the kind aforesaid, which is adapted to be kept in action even when the engine is running at a considerable speed and without detriment to the normal action of the magneto.
The invention comprises the combination of a primary winding, a secondary. winding, and a pair of trembler interrupters respectively adapted to control the circuits containing the primary and secondary windings.
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory diagrams, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate one mode of carrying the invention into effect, 'gure 1 serving to elucidate the circuits shown in Figure 2.
In the diagrams a indicates the primary winding and b the secondary winding of a magneto having a camoperated interrupter c across which is arranged the usual condenser 07. The primary winding a of the magneto is adapted to be connected to the secondary winding e of a transformer having a primary winding ,f, the latter being adapted to be connected to a storage battery or other source of current supply g through a controlling switch I. I
In carrying the invention into effect as shown, I mount the primary and secondary windings f, e of the transformer on an iron core h, and in association with the core are arranged a pair of trembler interrupters i, 7' adapted to respond to the magnetic attraction of the core. The interrupter i is arranged in and controls the circuit of the primary winding 1, and the other interrupter 1 is arranged in and controls the circult of the secondary winding e. Also the interrupter i is normally closed and the interrupterj is normally open. The interrupter i consists of a resilient metal blade In (Figure 2) secured at one end to a fixed support m, and carrying at its other end a contact n, the latter being adapted to cooperate with an adjustable contact for controlling the primary winding f. The other interrupter i consists or a second resilient metal blade 9 secured at one end to the fixed support m and carrying a contact q adapted to co-operate with another contact 1' for controlling the secondary winding e, the latter contact being mounted on but insulated from an intermediate part of the first blade k. The second blade 12 is adapted to respond directly to the magnetic attraction of the transformer core )1, and for this purpose in the example shown in Figure 2 is provided with an iron armature s which is situated adjacent to the core, and on which the contact q is mounted. Also the second blade 1) is situated between the first blade is and the transformer,
andthe armature s is bent and arranged to extend through an aperture t in the first blade so that the contact q on the armature can co-opcrate with the corresponding contact r, the latter being mounted on the side of the first blade remote from the transformer core h. The contacts n, o are normally closed and the contacts a, r are normally open. Movement of the second blade 11 by magnetic attraction of the core 71. first eauses closure of the contacts q, r, and is then transmitted through these contacts to the first blade k, causing the contacts n, o to be opened. Cone sequently this movement of the second blade serves to establish the circuit containing the transformer secondary winding e and to interrupt the circuit containing the transformer primary winding 1'.
When current flows from the source of supply a through the transformer primary winding 1. electromagnetic energy is stored in the system, and on interruption of this current the stored energy is converted into current in the transformer secondary winding e, the secondary current being supplied to the primary winding a of the magneto through the corresponding interrupter 1' which at this instant is in the closed condition.
A condenser u may be arranged across the contacts of each of the interrupters 2', 1.
The apparatus above described differs from other forms of auxiliary apparatus of the kind above specified, in that a trembler interrupter is associated with each of the transformer windings. By the use of two interrupters operating as above described the auxiliary apparatus can be kept in action for a longer time than usual after the engine has been started, for the reason that there is but little if any interference with the normal action of the magneto when the latter is running at considerable speed. Also the interrupter associated with the secondary winding ensures automatic disconnection of that winding from the magneto when the control switch is opened and the auxiliary apparatus thereby put out of action.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Auxiliary spark ignition apparatus of the kind specified, comprising the combination of a primary winding, 21 secondary winding, and a pair or trembier interrupters respectively adapted and secondary windings.
to control the circuits containing the primary v 2. 'Auxiliaryspark ignition apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which the primary and secondary windings are mounted on an iron core, and in which the trembler interrupter associated with the secondary winding is responsive to magnetic attraction of the said core, and is adapted to actuate the trembier interrupter associated with the primary windinz.
