UNTTEE STATES PATENT Trice.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,683, dated November 23, 1880.
Application filed May 25, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN R. MoOoRMroK, of Georgetown, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. top View, and Fig. 3 is a side view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to sulky-plows and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the axle, which is provided at one end with a crank, 13, and is supported upon wheels 0 O. Axle A is adjusted in hearings in a pair of braces, D D, arranged near the crank end of the axle, as shown. A third brace, E, extends from the front end of braces-D to the other end of the axle for which an additional hearin g, F, is provided at the rear end of said brace. Collars G, adjustable by set-screws H, are placed upon the axle on both sides of and closely adjoining the bearing F, thus permitting tlie axle to be transversely adjusted, when so desired, in relation to the plow.
The braces D D are provided at their rear ends with downward extensions, between which a pair of plates, 1 I, are arranged, as shown. Said plates are connected by bolts J, by which they may be tightened upon the plow-beam K, which is inserted between said plates, its front end being connected in any suitable manner to a short beam, L, located between two arms, M, which project downwardly from the front ends of braces D. The beam L is provided at its front end with a loop or clevis, N, for attachment of, the draft.
For the vertical adjustment of the front and Fig. 2 is a rear ends of the plow, respectively, I avail myself of levers O P, pivoted between the front 0 and rear ends of the braces D, and having cranks or arms Q R, the ends of which are connected respectively to the short beam, L, and to one of the bolts J by which the plates 1 I are secured together, rods or chains S being employed to form such connection.
To retain the levers O P at any position to which they may be adjusted segmental plates T, to which said levers may be latched at any desired angle, are, by preference, employed. The axle A is provided with a lever, U, which may be attached at any desired point to a segmental plate V, secured to one of the braces D, thus permitting the said axle to be adjusted so as to level the plow when one of the wheels is running in the furrow. All the levers are under the control of the driver, whose seatW is arranged upon a platform, X, supportedupon the brace E and upon the axle, as shown.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood.
Any kind of plow may be readily attached to the snlky, of which latter the means for adjusting and manipulating the plow form integral parts. The draft, being attached to the short beam L, is actually upon the front end of the plow-beam, and is accordingly as light as may be. Finally, the device is simple, durable, and inexpensive.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the crank-axle and tongue, of the angular guide-braces D D, diagonal brace E, and the adjustable collars G G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. MCCORMICK.
