This invention relates to devices for making cigarettes and more particularly to devices :of this type intended for 'handoperation.

Devices of this characterare well knowninithe art and as they are used primarily by amateurs for rolling their cigarettes at "home .it is important that they be as simple in operation :as possible and require the minimum of judgement on the part of the operator.

The object of the present invention is to provide adevice of the character indicated embodying a-simple attachmentby means of which the cigarette wrap can be accurately positioned so as to assure a correctly rolledcigarette-without interfering with the rolling operation.

A furtherobject is to providea paper holding attachment which= canbe readily applied to devices of the general character indicated already known and on the market without anysubstantial modification of the original devices.

Various other objects of the invention will more particularly appear in the course of the following detailed description.

The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an improved cigarette-rolling device embodying the present invention;

The present invention is herein illustrated as comprising a base I upon which are mounted spaced parallel longitudinally extending flanges 2 between which is mounted a platform l2 of inverted U-shape.

Pivoted between the flanges 22 as by rivets 5 are the spaced parallel arms 33 of a rollercarrying frame which is adapted to embrace and be rocked over the platform I2. The arms 33 are connected at their outer ends by a transverse member 4, serving as a handle and each of the arms 3 is formed with a medial enlargement 6, the function of which will hereinafter appear. Between the arms 33 is rotatably mounted a roller 1 adjacent the outer portion of the enlargement 6, the roller 1 being of a length substantially equal to the width of the platform I2.

A flexible apron 8 of the same width as the platform I! is provided having its end edges formed asa hem (not shown) and the apron 8 is of sufficient length to extend over the platform I2 and have its ends secured to the platform l "adjacent the ends thereof as by wires 53 passing through the end hems of the apron and "also through holes in the side flanges -22, each of the wires shaving one end formed with a loop portion l0 adapted torocki-ngly engage the end of *fiange 2 to secure thewi-re 9 in position withrespect to these flanges. The apron 8 is of sufiicient length :so that 'when secured 'by its ends to the platform I and extending over platform 12 and roller 1 there will'be'sufiicient slack "to form a loop between the -platform -l2 and "the roller 7 as {illustrated in Figure "1, this loop? constituting-apocket, the ends of which are closed by the enlargements 6--6 on the arms 33, which pocket is adapted to receive the tobacco which is to be rolled into a cigarette.

With the device as thus described after a cigarette wrapper is properly positioned over the apron 8 on the top of platform [2 and the arms 33 are rocked to the right the advance of roller 1 over the platform l2 operates to produce a rolling effect on the tobacco in. the pocket P gradually compressing this tobacco in cylindrical form as it approaches the top of the platform where the cigarette wrap is positioned, at which point the tobacco engages the wrap and is rolled with it into the form of a cigarette which is discharged as a completed article at the right hand side of the device.

The construction thus far described is known and illustrated in my co-pending application Serial No. 397,614, filed June 11, 1941, now Patent No. 2,298,086, of which application the present application is a continuation in part. In connection with such a device the proper positioning of the cigarette wrap W with respect to the platform I2 while quite essential to the successful production of a cigarette is a matter of chance or judgment on the part of the operator unless some means is provided to accurately and properly position this wrap. The provision of such a guide for the wrap to properly hold the paper with respect to the platform 12 must not interfere with the rocking of the arms 33 and roller 1 over the platform l2 and to accomplish this object I provide a paper-holding attachwrap W can contact and thus assure its proper positioning transversely of the platform E2. The free ends 11-" of the arms i5l5 are inturned in axial alignment to constitute pivots which are adapted to seat in suitable holes 18 which may be drilled in the sides of the base I. A spiral spring 29 is associated with one of the arms l5 at its inturned pivot end I! and arranged to resiliently bias the frame and platform 25 carried thereby to a predetermined position over the platform I2 where the arms l5 will engage and be stopped by the outturned lugs 282B struck from the flanges 2-2.

In operation the process of making a cigarette is substantially the same as that previously described, but it will be noted that as the arms 3--3 approach a vertical position the enlargements 6 will contact the ends of the connecting por-- tion 26 as the forward edge of the cigarette wrap W is engaged by the advancing roll of tobacco and that the further advancement of the roller I over the platform l2 will carry the platform 25 with its supporting frame with it so that the paper support and gauge are rocked in advanceof the cigarette-rolling device without any interference with the rolling operation. Upon the completion'of the rolling of a cigarette the return of the roller! to the left releases the paper support and its frame which is automatically returned to its initial position by the spring 20.

Various modification in the precise construction and arrangement of the parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, but within the scope of the present invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. In cigarette making apparatus having a platform, an apron positioned over the platform and a roller positioned intermediate the platform and apron, said roller mounted on a frame pivoted with respect to the platform, means for positioning a cigarette paper with respect to the platform comprising a frame pivotally mounted with respect to the platform, means for resiliently biasing said latter frame to a predetermined position over the platform, a table member for supporting papers mounted on said last mentioned frame, said table including a gauge member adapted to correctly align the paper thereon, the roller carrying frame being arranged to engage and retract the paper support frame as specified.

2. In cigarette making apparatus including a base, a platform, an apron extending over the platform and a, roller adapted to pass between the platform and apron, a frame member formed with a part substantially parallel with and transversely disposed over the platform and apron, a paper supporting table member adjustably mounted-by one edge on said transverse part and having its other edge formed with a flange to constitute a paper gauge, said transverse part having depending end legs, the lower ends of which are inturned to form pivotal supports in the base, spring means interposed between the base and one of the depending and legs, and a pivotal frame for the roller, said roller frame arranged to engage and rock the frame for the table member.
