FOLDING PACKING-CASE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. YAXLEY, of Kirtland, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Packing-Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to trunks, packingcases, and containers of like character adapted for use in the shipment of goods; and it consists, first, of a packing-case provided with a recessed cover hinged at or near its center, and also having its sides, ends, and bottom so hinged together that the body of the trunk or case may be readily folded together and stored within the folded cover; second, in a folding packing-case, the combination, with an end piece and a side piece, of a hinge having one leaf secured to one of said first-mentioned parts, and its other leaf formed angular and adapted to be folded over the other first-mentioned part, and a longitudinally-sliding bolt which locks said end piece and side piece and angular hinge-leaf together.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric View of a trunk constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the cover removed, showing the position of one of the sides folded against the end and the other Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the several parts for forming my case or trunk are hinged together. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the cover (shown in a closed condition) removed from the trunk or case. Fig. 5 shows the manner of packing the sides, ends, and bottom of the trunk or case within the cover. Fig. 6 is a detached view of my locking device employed in securing the sides, ends, and bottom together. Fig. 7 is a detail view illustrating the manner of connecting the sides of the case to the ends of the case at the corners which are provided with hinges F. Fig. 8 is a detail view illustrating manner of securing cover to the side by lock and catch. Fig. 9 is a detail view illustrating the manner of securing the two halves of the cover together by lock and catch.

It is a well-known fact that freight is often estimated by the space taken up by the package.

The object of my invention is to make a trunk or packing-case that can be used as such and be filled with any matter desired, sent to its destination, and upon being emptied can be knocked down, repacked within itself in the least possible space, and returned to the original shipper, when it can again be used for the same purpose.

In the said drawings, A represents the cover of my trunk, package, or case, which is of the recessed form and hinged in the center, as shown in Fig. 4.

B is the bottom of my trunk or case, which is also hinged in its center, the hinge extending completely across the bottom.

0 represents the sides of my trunk or case. These are also divided and hinged in the center, and one of the edges of the side is hinged to the end of the case. The end I prefer to use in its whole condition. This in turn is hinged to the bottom of the case. The bottom is divided in the center and hinged to one edge of the end. This in turn is hinged to one side, which in turn is hinged in the center. The other end of the bottom is hinged to the other end of the case. This end in turn is hinged to the side, which latter is divided by ahinge in its center, thereby adapting the whole to be folded closely.

Two diagonally-opposite corners, E, of the case are provided each with a hinge, F, one leaf, to, of which is secured to the corresponding end of the case, and the other 1ea-f,b, made in angular form, is adapted to be detachably connected to the corresponding side of the case, as follows: Bolts G have longitudinal movement in suitable bearings on the interior of the ends of the case. Thebodies of the bolts are provided with lateral projections, a, which, by engagement with the bearings of the bolts, prevent the latter from being drawn out an unduedistancefrom theirbearings. Theouter ends of the bolts are provided with oblong heads d, adapted to be'passed through oblong holes 6, formed in the sides of the case, and also in the free leaves of hinges F. When the V H I angular leaf 1) of either of the latter hinges is folded in looking position against the corresponding side of the case, the corresponding bolt G is moved outward, so that its head may pass through the oblong holes 6. The bolt is then turned on its longitudinal axis, and the parts are locked together.

I prefer to provide my case or trunk with two locksone lock, H, attached to the body of the trunk, with the catch f attached to the cover, the other lock, K, attached to the cover, which engages with the catch y, attached to the body of the trunk or case. This second lock is thus adapted for use when the cover is folded, and made to serve as a container for the rest of the case, as well shown in Fig. 9 of the drawingscatch f, secured to one half of the cover, engaging with said lock K, secured to the other half of the cover.

Hinges L, or any othersuitable form of hinge, may be used for attaching the cover of my device to the box itself, the only essential feature being a hinge whose parts can be readily separated, thereby permitting of the removal of the cover from the trunk or case when opened.

I do not limit myself to any specific construction, as my invention is adapted for use not only for trunks, but also for the ordinary shipping-cases or for crates, such as are used for the shipment of eggs and merchandise of that character.

WVhat I claim is- 1. A packing-case provided with a recessed cover hinged at or near its center, and also having its sides, ends, and bottom so hinged together that the body of the trunk or case maybe readily folded together and stored within the folded cover, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

2. In a folding packing-case, the combination, with an end piece and a side piece, of a hinge having one leaf secured to one of said first-mentioned parts, and its otherleaf formed angular and adapted to be folded over the other first-mentioned part,and a lon gitudinallysliding bolt which looks said end piece and side piece and angular hinge-leaf together, substantially as set forth.
