Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. W. WADE AND FRANCIS T. CORDIS, OF LONGMEADOW, MASSACHUSETTS.
LABEL FOR TREES, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,390, dated December 21, 1858.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that we, wWILLIAM IV. VADE and FRANCIS T. CoRDIs, both of Longmeadow, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Tag or Label for Trees, Shrubs, and Seeds; and we hereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescription of the same.
The tag or label is made by inclosing a piece of paper or other suitable substance, whereon is printed or written the name of the tree, shrub, or seed, between two plates of mica, the edges of which are closed by a metallic rim turned down and cemented upon the mica; or between a metallic plate back and a face of mica, the edge of the metallic back being brought down upon and cemented to t-he face of mica, so as to exclude air and water from the paper within, and leaving the printed or written mattei' distinctly legible through the face 0I' mica. Any metal not readily oxidized by exposure to the atmosphere may be used; we prefer Zinc, as being at once durable and inexpensive. A less durable metal may be employed if protected by paint. The metal isV used in the form of a very thin plate-thick enough only to resist any ordinary pressure to which the tag is likely to be exposed. To the top of the tag or label thus made is attached, by soldering or otherwise, a small metallic ring, by means of which the tag or label is affixed to the tree or shrub to be designated by it, It may be t-hus atlixed to a tree or shrub by aid of a wire passed through the ring and around a branch of the tree. When seeds,
or the places where they are sowed are to be designated the tag may be in like manner aliixed to a stake to be driven into the ground at the desired spot.
In the accompanying drawings Figures 1,
2, 3, 4t, are face views of the tag. Figs. 5, 6, 7, are sectional views. Fig. 5, is a sectional view of the metallic rim, or border, B partially formed, so as easily to receive the plates of mica, E, E containing between them the paper or other substance on which is written or printed the descriptive matter. Figs. 6, and 7 show the mode of constructing t-he tag or label with a metallic plate back F, and a face of mica, while between these is contained the paper or other substance on which the descriptive matter is written or prevented.
C is the ring by which the tag is hung or tied to the tree or shrub, or, when used to indicate the place where seeds are planted, to the stake D The usefulness of this invention consists in its providing a cheap, convenient, and lasting means of designating and distinguishing the several kinds and qualities of trees, shrubs, and plants, in orchards, nurseries, and gardens.
The tag may be made of any desirable form.
That we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* The combination of a metallic rim or back with paper or other suitable substance on which is written or printed the name of a tree, shrub, plant, or seed, and a plate or plates of mica and a metallic ring, in either of the modes in the foregoing specilication described, as a tag or label for designating and distinguishing the varieties of trees,
shrubs, plants, and seeds, in orchards, nurseries, and gardens as above described.
