This invention relates generally to improvements in lamps and more particularly to lamps of the type adapted to be suspended from bedsteads or the like.

One of the objects of this invention is the provision of a lamp of this type which' directs the light in a manner most desirable for reading purposes.

Another object of this invention is the provision vo f a lamp of this type which is attractive in appearance, simple to manufacture and highly eflicient in operation.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bed lamp constructed in accordance lwith the present invention.

Referring to the drawings wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral I designates, generally, the lamp supporting structure which comprises an oblong plate member I2, provided at each end, thereof, with back plate an ear I3 which is bent at right angles to the plane of said plate member. Each ear I3 is provided with a threaded aperture for receiving a screw I4, the said screw having a knurled head I and being provided with an enlarged portion I6 forming a shoulder I1 adjacent the threaded portion of the screw.

The plate I2 is formed to provide vertically extending channels I'Ia which add rigidity to the plate and also serveto receive the hook elements' I3 which are suitably secured, as by welding, in the base of the channels Ila. The hook elements I8 are suitably shaped to engage a bed post or other article of furniture from which it is desired to suspend the lamp. A section of rubber avoiding scratching or mai-ring of the furniture to which the lamp is applied and therefrom suspended.

The side marginal edges of the window 30 are each provided with an outwardly directed ledge 34 which conforms in contour to the front wall of the housing. A flexible translucent or transparent member 35, oblong in shape, is fitted in the window 30 and is supported in the recesses 33 and on the ledges 34. It will be seen in Fig. 2 that the member 35 when thus positioned assumes the rounded contour of the front wall of the housing.

The rear edge of the housing 29 is slotted at each side thereof, forming slots 31 extending in a horizontal plane. A U shaped boss 33 extends along the marginal edge of each slot ,3.1,

on the outer surface of the housing v33, the terminal portions of the legs of each boss 33 being of increased thickness to provide an arcuate shoulder 4I). The housing 29 is recessed at the sides thereof, on the inner surface, as at 4l, the recesses being alined with the slots 3l and serving to accommodate the ears i3 of the back plate I2.

The screws Il are then tightened and, as will be seen, particularly in Fig. 5, the arcuate shoulders 40 formed on the bosses 3l abut the enlarged portions I6 of the screws and serve as stopping means for preventing the screws I4 from slipping out of the slot 31 and the consequent disengagement of the housing 29 from the back plate I2.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A lamp of the character described comprising a housing having a window in the forward portion thereof and provided with a slot at each side, lighting means mounted in said housing, a. back plate for said housing, said plate having forwardly directed ears each being provided with screw means engageable in said slots for detachably securing said housing to said plate, and means for suspending said lamp.

2. A lamp of the character described comprising a housing having a slot at each side thereof, an embossed portion forming a shoulder at the mouth of each slot, a back plate, said plate having forwardly directed ears each being provided with screw means engageable in said slots for detachably securing said housing to said plate, said screw means arranged to abut said shoulders for preventing disengagement of said housing from said back plate when .same are in assembled relation.

3. A lamp of the character described comprising a housing open at the rear and provided with a window in the forward portion thereof, the said housing having a slot at each side thereof and an embossed portion forming a shoulder at the mouth of each slot along the marginal edges thereof, a back plate, said plate having forwardly directed ears, each being provided with screw means engageable in said slots for detachably securing said housing to said plate, said screw means arranged to abut said shoulders for preventing disengagement of said housing from said back plate when same are in assembled relation.
