Description

Mud! 1941? 1-1.0. THOMPSON 2,235,951
FIRE EXTINGUISHBR Filed Jan. 25, 1940 Inventor Harold 0. bow 03am By gum MM A iiarneys "nested Mar. 25, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to flre extinguishers, and more particularly to portable hand-operated extinguishers equipped for throwing an extinguishing fluid.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided an extinguisher embodying a receptacle for the extinguishing material, and which receptacle is of a material permitting perforation thereof, and is equipped for the connection thereto of a hand-operated pump for use in forcing the fluid in a stream from the receptacle.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection lo with the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the fire extinguisher.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
2a Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-4 of Figure 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the receptacle for the extinguishing fluid is indicated by the reference numeral and is shown as being in the form of a relatively shallow receptacle, provided with the flat end walls 22 and 23 and an externally threaded neck 2i is attached to the lower portion of the wall 22.
A hand pump H is used with the device and includes the cylinder I2 having a piston ii therein with the rod i5 having its inner end connected with the piston, the rod passing through a hole in the front end of the cylinder and the outer end or the rod has a handle i5 attached thereto. A cap i3 is attached to the rear end oi the cylinder or barrel and includes a top part having a centrally arranged hole therein and an internally threaded cylindrical sleeve, the top part of the cap extending across the rear end of the barrel or cylinder of the pump and being welded or otherwise attached to the cylinder or barrel as shown in Figure 2. This cap is to be threaded to the neck 2!. A pin or piercing instrument I! is connected with the piston and passes through the hole in the top part of the cap as shown in Figure 2. This pin or instrument I! is of such a length that when the piston is moved toward the receptacle 20 said pin will pass through both walls 22 and 23 of the receptacles, to thereby pro vide, in an obvious manner, an air intake orifice 5 in the wall 22 and a fluid discharge opening or orifice in the wall 23 of the receptacle so that, in response to the operation 01' the pump Ii, the extinguishing fluid will be discharged in a stream from the receptacle. 10
From the foregoing it will be seen that with my fire extinguisher the hand pump can be readily coupled to, or connected with the receptacle containing the extinguishing fluid, and when so coupled to the receptacle will serve as a handle 5 therefor while at the same time permitting facile operation of the pump for the initial perforating operation and consequent forceful discharge of the extinguishing fluid, in a stream, from the receptacle. 20
Many other advantages of a fire extinguisher embodying the features of this invention will readily present themselves to those skilled in the a.
Having thus described the invention what is 25 claimed as new is:
In a tire extinguisher, a hand pump including a barrel, 9. piston and a piston rod passing through one end of the barrel and having a handle on its outer end, a cap including a top part and 31 an internally threaded cylindrical sleeve, the outer iace of said top part being fastened to the other end of the barrel and said top part having a hole therein, a receptacle containing fire extinguishing fluid, a circular tubular neck connected to the lower part of one side oi! the receptacle and threaded exteriorly for receiving the threaded part of the cap and a long needle connected with the piston of the pump and passing through the hole in the top part of the cap, said needle being of sufllcient length to pass through both sides of the receptacle when the piston is pressed toward the receptacle.
