Description
I G. B. WHITING. Drawer for Safe-Keeping-of Drawings.
v Patented Jan. 6, 1880.
INVENT DR= IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII/IIIII/IIIfllfll/IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII N'PETERS, PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. WHITING, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
DRAWER FOR SAFE-KEEPING OF DRAWINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,423, dated 6, 1880.
Application filed September 8, 1879.
To all whom it. may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. \VHITING, of Washington city, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvementswhich are to be removed or replaced, the object of my invention being to facilitate the handling of said drawings or engravings without being torn or injured, especially when the intermediate or lower ones are removed.
. The nature of my invention consists in making the drawer or receptacle with a sliding frame provided at its front part with a roller, rod tube, or bar, by means of and upon which the drawings, engravings, &c., are raised and supported while the drawings, engravings, &c., below are removed.
Figure l is a plan view of the drawer. 2 is a vertical crosssection on line am.
In the drawings, A is the body of the drawer, provided at its sides with a recess or rabbet, a, in which the sides of .sliding frame B are made to freely slide. This sliding frame is provided with a roller, rod, or bar, I), at its front part, and is supported in the side pieces 0, which are preferably made of metal. The rod or bar may also be made of wood or metal, or a metal tube. These side pieces extend toward the rear end of the drawer, and are there provided with flanges d, to which a framepiece, 0, is secured. At the rear end of the drawer is arranged a narrow piece, d, which prevents the drawings, &c., contained in said Fig.
' drawer from slipping over the back. The
front of the drawer is recessed, as shown at D, and may be made as ornamental as desired, and in this recess a handle, E, supported on studs or supports f, is secured The handle may be made as ornamental as desired. By means of this handle, which does not project as far on account of the recess, the drawer can be very easily pulled out, it giving a good bearing near the ends, while it can be taken hold of at any point between them.
The operation is as follows: The drawer being first drawn out as far as necessary, the front edges of the drawings are raised until the one is reached which it is desired to remove, The roller, rod, or bar is then pushed back, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 2. The upper drawings being raised clear of the remaining ones, as shown by the curved lines, the drawings or engravings desired to be removed can be readily andeasily taken out without injury. The sliding frame is then drawn forward again, when the drawings that were supported upon it will fall into their proper places; or by the same operation a drawing or engraving can be readily and easily inserted between any of the others, or under all of them, if desired.
The great advantages of my drawer are that it is very simple in its construction; the drawings, engravings, &c., can be very easily taken out without in any way injuring them;
there is no liabilityof any part getting out of order; it has a very ornamental appearance; it can be produced at a very moderate cost; and it requires no tilting, but can remain in its horizontal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A drawer consisting of a body, A, having grooves a, and provided with an open sliding frame, B, consisting of a roller, rod, or bar, b, side pieces 0 c, and frame-piece 0, all arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
GEO. B. WHITING.
