Description

Feb. 25, 1941.. L. 1..- McCART- 2,233,138
METHOD OF PREPARING CARDS AND THE LIKE FOR S ORTING Filed March 6, 1940 INVENTOR. LUC/EN 1.. M9 CART V ATTORNEY;
Patented Feb. 25, 194-1 UNITED- STATES,
PATENT OFFICE METHOD OF PREPARING CARDS AND THEv LIKE FOB. BORING Lucien L. McCart, Forest Hills, N. 1., assig'nor to The McBee Company,;Athens, Ohio, at corporation of Ohio Application March 6, 1940, Serial No. 322,471
4 Claims. (01. 164-111) ployed for that purpose besides the one set forth in my patent above referred to such, for example,
10 as Patent No. 1,922,869.
In this specification, when I say cards I use the word as a convenient term to describe checks, sales slips, time cards, loose leaves, etc.,, and in no sense as a limitation. In accordance'with II the Perkins patent, the cards are provided with a plurality of perforations adjacent one or more edges of the cards, each hole being located so that it may be separately slotted out to the edge.
' These notches orsiots form a pattern which 20 refers to a single classification and by following the teachings of the Perkins patent, to which referencemay be had for complete details, the cards can be sorted into a numerical, geographical, or other desired sequence. Inasmuch as 35 For the purpose of illustrating a concrete form of apparatus to follow my method, reference may be had to the accompanyi g drawing. which are hereunto annexed in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation with part of the device 40 broken away and the same being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section of the same device on the line33ofFlg.1;and 45 Fig. 4 is a plan view of the master key plate. Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire specification.
Asshown in the drawing, a slotting device is shown, but as stated, it is only for'illustrative 5 purposes. In this device is a base which supports a frame I, the frame is provided with an anvil 2. This anvil is preferably provided on the upper surface with. a die plate I. .A slot 4 being formed along one edge of the anvil and die plate. 56. The extreme edge of the die plate 3 is provided withan abutment against which the masterkey plate and card abut.
The frame I is provided with uprights i.- Se-v cured to these uprights 6 is a spring plate I which is provided with a downward projection :5 8, a slot 9 being formed therein into which the ends of springs l0 may be formed. The projection 8 is spaced from the anvil 2 as indicated at to permit the insertion of the master [key plate and card. 10 A plurality of slotting punches I: are provided, the number of the same corresponding to the number of perforations 'in the Perkins card which ,is to be slotted. As illustrated, they are pivotally mounted on a pin I 3,*one arm of the spring I0 is wound around this pin. The outer end 4 of the spring is wound around a projection Ii which extends upwardly from the punch body. It will be clear that this arrangement will serve to hold the punches suspended above but being pivotally mounted, engagement of the lower part will tend to tilt the punch so that it will be inoperative;
A yoke I! provided with a handle I8 is secured to the frame I, a spring I! being provided to hold it normally in horizontal position On this yoke I mount a cross bar 2| which engages the Punches and which actuate the same when the handle I8 is depressed.
It will be clear to persons skilled in the art that if the handle [8 is depressed it will project all of the dies downwardly, the card will be notched by all of the punches. This however is not the practice of my method which is 'as stated to slot a pattern of notches referring toa 85 a pattern of notches which, refers, for example,
-' which will be required to notch the desired pattern will be depressed by the movement of the handle l8.
It will also be clear to persons skilled in the art that although I have shown the specific type of card slotter illustrated and described in my Patent No. 2,144,412, that any numberof devices for example, such as referred to abovewill be con- 7 structed which will employ my method and as stated the drawing is furnished merely for illustrativepurposes. I
Having described my invention what I regard .as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.'The method of preparing cards and the like for sorting comprising the following steps, punching a pulrality of holes adjacent one or more edges of a card, providing a plurality of meansto notch one or more edges of said card, rendering certain 01' said notching means inoperative, actuating said notchlng means thereby notching said card with a predetermined pattern of notches in one edge I of said card.
2. The method of preparing cards and the like for sorting comprising the following steps, punching a plurality of holes adjacent one or more edges of a card. providing means to notch one or V more edga of said card, notching a master plate of harder material than the card to'be notched with a pattern of notches on one edge, inserting said plate in said notching means thereby rendering certain of the notching means inoperative, actuating said notching means thereby notching said card withapredetermined pattern of notches in one edge of said card.
3. The method of preparing cards and the like for sorting comprising the following steps, punching a plurality of holes adiacent one or more edges of a card, providing means to notch one or more edges of said card, inserting means 02 harder ma- 7 edges of a card, preparing a master card of harder 15 material than the card to be notched with a predetermined pattern of notches on one edge, providing means to punch notches in the edge of said card, rendering certain of said punches inoperative whereby to punch apredetermined pattern 20 of notches in the edge of the card.
