E. J. OVINCTFION, Jr. Device for Exibting Crockery.
No. 223,239. Patented 1an.6, 1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. OVINGTON, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR EXHIBITING CROCKERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,239, dated January 6, 1880.
Application filed J une 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be in known that I, EDWARD J. OvTNG'roN, Jr., of Chicago, in the county ofCook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Devices for Exhibiting Crockery, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed for holding sample pieces of crockery or plaques,7 as they are called in the trade, and similar articles which are required to be suspended upon the walls of stores where they are kept for sale; and it consists inthe combination of two yokes, the four ends whereof are hooked, so as to receive the edge of the article to be held, and a unitingscrew, whereby they may be adjusted to the size ofthe article, and, when adj usted, may be drawn firmly together, so as tightly to embrace it within their four arms.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a plaque to which my apparatus has been applied preparatory to hanging' upon the wall or rack. Fig. 2 is a view of the apparatus detached from the plaque, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same.
In said drawings, A A are the yokes, which are exactly alike, except that one is preferably loose upon the uniting screw-rod B, while the other is threaded, so as to be moved when the rod turned. They may be made each of two pieces of metal, united at thev apex, as shown, and I prefer this method, because I am able in that construction to obtain suflicient thickness and strength at the point of junction to hold the parts together and give that requisite amount of threaded bearing. They may, however, be made each of one piece, if preferred.
Each point is turned over to form ahook, a; and in order that this hook may turn in the right direction, and also to permit lne to avail of the flexible nature ofthe metal of the arms in using the' apparatus with plaques of different sizes and shapes, l twist cach arm at a', as shown in the drawings.
The rod B is threaded, and passes freely through one yoke, A', and to its end is applied a stop, s, to prevent withdrawal. The other end of the rod is given a bend to form an eye, c, whereby the whole may be suspended.
The apparatus is used as follows: The plaque being placed with the apparatus upon its back or bottom surface, the screw-rod is then turned until the yokes are brought as near together as the size of the plaque will permit, the hooks engaging with the edge of the plaque, as shown in Fig. l. The whole may then be hung up by the eye e.
TheI arms of the yoke, heilig tiexible, may be readily bent, so that the hooks will pass over the edge of plaques of different sizes and shapes, as will be plainly seen.
The arms may be made of wire, if preferred, and an independent device for hanging may be used instead of the eye upon the rod, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Although in Fig. 1 the eye is shown projecting above the plaque, in most cases it will be hidden from sight by the plaque.
I claim- The adjustable device for exhibiting crockery, consisting of the yokes with the hooked ends and a vuniting and adjusting screw-rod having an eye at one end, whereby the device maybe suspended, the parts bein g constructed and operating substantially as speciied.
