CURTAIN ROD BRACKET Filed March 23, 1939 y INKENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
patented Jan. 28, 1941 UNITE STTES PATENT OFFECE 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to curtain rod brackets and has for its main object the provision of a `bracket wherein one end of a curtain rod may be hingedly pivoted so that upon lifting of the opposite end of the rod from its cooperating bracket, the rod may angularly shift downwardly for the purpose of placing thereon a curtain, drapery or other fabric hanging, without the necessity of lifting oir the entire rod from both brackets.
With the above general objects in View and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the :accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 7 is an end elevational View of the curtain rod bracket of the modified form shown in Fig. 6;
Fig. 3 is a top-plan View of the curtain rod bracket of another modified construction; and
Fig. 9 is an end cross-sectional `view through the bracket, taken substantially on line 9 9 oi Fig. 5.
Referring to the present drawing in detail the preferred form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, includes leaf Ill adapted to be attached to window frame II. Rgidly formed with and perpendicularly extending from said leaf I0 is plate I2 which supports a pair of cup members I3, the latter being either soldered or otherwise rigidly afxed to said plate I2. Each of said members I3 is provided at its lower end with a cross plate I4 for strengthening the structure of each of said members I3. Each of said members I3 is further provided with a vertical slot I5 through which one end of curtain rod I is insertable within cup member t3. The end of said rod IG which is insertable within the cup member I3 through said slot l5 is provided with a rigidly formed ball Il, the diameter of which may be either equal to the diameter of the cupshaped member I3 or if preferred may be smaller than the latter. Said ball I'I constitutes an engaging means for the adjacent end of rod I6 with cup member I3, preventing said end of rod I6 from withdrawing from said member I3, but at the same time permitting vertical pivotal movement of the rod with respect to said member i3;
Slot I5 does not extend throughout the entire length of said member I3, but terminates short of the lower end thereof, effecting a marginal strip in transverse relation with respect to slot I5 upon which rod I@ is adapted to rest and which prevents further downward shifting movement of said rod I6, as is clearly seen in Fig. 3.
Slots Iii in the cup members I3 are at an angle with respect to the said supporting plate I2, necessitating elbow I3 in rod IB.
The opposite free end of rod It is adapted for positioning upon a conventional bracket I9. Said latter bracket includes an aiXing plate 2li with which said bracket I9 is rigidly formed and from which the same projects at a right angle. Said bracket I9 further includes a pair of slots 2i within which the free end of one or two of rods I may fit.
When a curtain or other fabric hanging is required to be placed upon rod I6 or taken off therefrom, the free end of said rod i6 is taken off from its cao-operating bracket I9, by lifting the same manually. This operation permits rod I6 to be pivotally shifted at its opposite end in its co-cperating cup member I3 to assume the position shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 5. When in that angular position the curtain or other fabric hanging may be placed upon rod I6 and thereupon the free end thereof may be lifted manually or by some suitable lifting tool to bracket I9. Thus from the hereinabove description it will be apparent that the employment of a step-ladder to lift rod l5 oi its brackets or to place the same thereon is entirely eliminated.
The modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 6 and '7 contemplates a bracket of modined form which includes an aflixing leaf l0 with supporting plate l2 rigidly amxed to the former. Said plate I2' is adapted to support a cup member I3 having a transverse brace I4 at its lower end, and a vertical oblong slot l5. If preferred, said plate I2 may be rigidly formed with the cup member i3', so that in the process of making of the bracket plates Iii', I2 and cup member i3', may be formed out of a single plate by suitably bending the same, as is seen in Fig. 6. Said slot I5 is on a plane parallel to the affixing plate li. or to the window frame. This modiiied structure of the bracket necessitates a modiiication of the construction oi rod i6 which is provided with a short stub end 22 in perpendicular relation with the body of rod i6. This modified construction of the bracket illustrated in Figs. 6 and '7 will permit the bracket to be placed either at the right' or left side of the window frame.
Figs. 6 and '7 illustrate the position of rod I6 when the bracket is afiixed to the left side of the window frame. When the bracket is placed at the right side of the window frame the position of rod l5 with respect to the bracket is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6. Rigidly affixed to the stub end Z2 of the rod is ball Il placed within cup member I3 and the purpose and operation oi said ball Il is the same as of ball l'l in the preferred form of the device.
A further modification of the bracket shown in Figs. 8 and 9 contemplates employment of a pair of cup members 23 afxed to the supporting plate l2, the latter being rigidly formed with afxing plate lil. In this modied form of the invention cup members 23 have slots 24 at points which are on a plane parallel to the supporting plate S2 or on a plane perpendicular to the affixing plate il or to the window frame. This bracket is adapted to receive rod 25 provided with a stub end 26 rigidly for-med with the body of the rod 25. In this modified form of the device rod 25 and the stub end 26 are on a vertical plane both in the operative position of rod 25 in conjunction with its two brackets and also when the same is lifted ofi by one of its ends from a cooperating bracket and shifted downwardly to an angular position illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 9. his modied form of the invention shown in Figs. 8 and 9 likewise includes ball 2l rigidly formed with the stub end 26 of rod 25. It will be further seen that when rod 25 is in an operative position shown by full lines in Figs. 8 and 9, portion of the body of rod 25 enters within cup member 23 through slot 24. When however the free end of rod 25 is lifted from the opposite bracket, the rod shifts angularly, so that when it assumes its ultimate angular position with respect to the bracket shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the stub end portion 26 thereof partially extends through slot 213 as is seen in dotted lines in Fig. 9.
It is further observed that when rods I6, I6' and 25 are of a diameter' smaller than the width of the respective slots I5, I5 and 24, then said rods may be shifted horizontally and obliquely in addition to the vertical shifting.
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is never'- theless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
l. The combination with a curtain rod having a main straight portion, an angularly directed end portion, and an enlarged ball xed on the free end of said angularly directed-end portion, of a supporting bracket for one end of said rod including an angular plate having a vertical attaching portion and a vertical portion extending at a right angle to and forwardly from said attaching portion, and a vertical cylindrical member rigid with said forwardly extending bracket portion and having a vertical slot opening through the top thereof but terminating above the bottom of the same, said ball being fitted in said cylindrical member for universal movement therein, said rod extending through and being movable in said slot to permit vertical swinging movement of said rod relative to said bracket from a horizontal curtain supporting position to a depending substantially vertical position when the other end of said rod is unsupported, and a further supporting bracket adapted to removably receive said other' end of the rod and cooperating with the first-named bracket for supporting said rod in the horizontal position.
